You could look into Austria (in Europe) in the early 90's they where 70% hydro powered!
Another possible point is with electric cars the fossil fuels are just getting burnt at a different stage (in station as opposed to the car) although I think that proportionally a coal station is more efficent per petrol car.
If anything I think its only the transition to worry about.

That interview with Obama was from January, and the San Francisco paper advertised it, but nobody thought it was important because it was before anyone thought Obama had a real shot at winning. It was the republican that were suppressing this story, and hoping to bring it back up at the last minute to sway the election. They were hoping to get it out there without him having a chance to respond.
