  • The Great One

  • This is from the video "Above and Beyond". I must have watched this video 500 times.

  • what biogrophy is this form?

  • Lemieux is better

  • @GerardKnight7 There is no video called Mario Lemieux Scores 50 goals in 39 games... Why? because it's something only the Great Gretzky could do.

  • @GerardKnight7 dumbass

  • @GerardKnight7 You are right.

  • 45 in 38 straight to 50 in 39. God I miss Gretzky ;(

  • Gretzky is hands down the GREATEST to ever play the game of Hockey. I will say this though, I think Mario Lemiuex wouldva been very close had cancer not taken a huge chunk of his prime away from him. And you CANNOT say Gretzky was the Ovechkin of his time because Gretz DEFINED "Goal Scorer." I don't care what anyone says, Gretzky is still in a league of his own and Crosby or Ovechkin still couldnt hold his jockstrap

  • Gordie Howe was Great for his time, just like Gretzky was great for his time, just like Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin are great for the current times.

  • @Sithlord703 lol Ovechkin is a scrub

  • @CtrlRm And that's your opinion

  • @2112murphy true I guess gretzky was like the ovi of his time. Like if he played now he would probobly get crushed because the players are so much bigger now. And theres alot less room on the ice now too and gretzky seems to use the ice alot nowadays he would have nowere to go. Now you have to make space back then there already was space on the ice.

  • In a fiver year span, Gretzky scored over 200 points in 4 of 5 seasons. The one year he didn't get 200, he scored 196. No other player has broken 200 points. Not in his era, and not in any other era. He was special and still would be today...

  • You can't compare players from different eras. It's about as stupid as the people comparing Lebron to MJ, it can't be done.

  • No ofense to gretzky but the goaltending sucked players were slower and the games were 8 or 6 goal games if ovechkin was playing back then he would have 100 goal seasons every year

  • @Mitchnagel58 yeah but if ovechkin was playing in those times he'd be just like everyone else. Gretzky was something special.

  • hmm what would be Gretzkys overall in NHL PC game? :D like 96? xD

  • @zupels007 in nhl12 its 97 lol

  • @SuperColossal33

Wherever you got your numbers, your completely off. In the Gretzky era the NHL averaged anywhere between 7-8 goals per game on average. Even hitting a high of 8.03 in the 81-82 season. In the 09-10 season and pretty much every year since 2000 has been between 5 and 6. It only peaked six in the 05-06 season, which can likely be accredited to the rise of Ovechkin and Crosby.

NHL has much better defense now, Gretzky would still shine, but not with as big of numbers no doubt.

  • yesterdays rules or todays rules(you can even throw in the 'bullet proof' equipment. and he would still make everyone look bad. just like he did then.

  • To be honest, in today's league, this guy would be like the equivalent on Jeff Carter. Scoring a respectable 40 plus goals a season. Never this much.

  • @MRDDRunny Your an idiot. Jeff Carter? No one ever has had gretzky's vision on the ice, geta clue moron.

  • 0:40 Rod Phillips going mental....

    Duh, Winning.

    Epic.

  • He was and is my idol.

  • Looks to me those keepers ar easy to beat...put him him against Thomas, Price, Luongo and he wouldnt even score 40

  • @Alonsovid204 you are so fucking close minded, look at his equpitment, make him 22 and have the athletic ability he had back then, give him a stick that isnt made of wood, then he would score 50 goals in 39 games

  • @plays4wtfdblds96 i think i offended a fucking canadian

  • @Alonsovid204 nope american, you must be european? go grow a penis please

  • Gretz just turned 50 and i heard he did it in 39 years

  • @conda420 thats funny. sizzmaster6985 needs to learn how to relax. maybe this joke will do the trick.

  • whine gretzky

  • @raddman20031960 Is a better player than you'll ever be

  • @Sizzmaster6985 im sure he is a better player than you too. i'm not worried i don't play hockey and never did. i'm just pointing out the fact that he is still a whiner at age 50. it sounds like you are too.

  • If he played in today's nhl, he would be better then when he played in the 80's because it would be more competitive growing up. It would have only made him better.

  • Haha the flyers goalie was not trying to save the pucks.

  • @gurra1982 the style of hockey was different back then.

  • Man..Theres a record that (IMO) will be probably NEVER Broken and also I would've LOVED to have been at that game(beingfrom edmonton) i'd have had a lot of pride knowing my city got to see/host this.

  • K bud I bet grets was better than you

  • Those damn Philly pants...

  • jagr sucks this is the true hero

  • 50 goals in 39 games?? WTF??? THIS IS THE GOD OF HOCKEY

  • Gretzky was awesome, but jeez the goalies were terrible!

  • @ptdnet your fucking retarded

  • You do that much coke and its going to sharpen your senses (it was the 80s after all). Watching the video, but not having seen the game it does kind of look like the Flyers are falling over themselves. No debating that Gretzky was the greatest marketing tool the NHL ever had. (Also, likely the best player.)

  • no else ever reached 1900 career points. Gretzky had over 2900. thats ridiculous.

  • @medialies100 oh my bad, he had 2857, still ridiculous. next highest is messier with 1887.

  • The best hockey player my ass! I bet if you put Gretzky ( back when he was "good" ) in todays style of play he would get owned by 90% of all nhl players! lol. look at how bad the goalies suck in this video and how bad the players suck also!

  • How bad the players suck?! In this game you have Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey & Grant Fuhr for Edmonton & Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber for Philadelphia (that's 8 hall-of-famers) and a guy that once scored 60 goals in Reggie Leach. Are you on dope? How can you make a comment like that without knowing anything at all about the players who played in the game? Gretzky would not score 92 goals nowadays, he'd get 45 easy though. The game is not better today.

  • @kangasevan123 gretzky played against a lot of the greatest players of all time. It doesn't matter when he played he would have dominated any generation

  • @kangasevan123 Ummm......you seem to know jackshit about hockey. Please just kill yourself.

  • @kangasevan123 If the goalies are so bad then why didn't anyone else score 91 goals in a season and get 200 points 4 times in a single season. It would be hilarious if Gretzky were to play now, no more two line passes, increase in penalties because of new rules and Goalies pads becoming smaller. You are probably one of those people think Orr was the best ever and magically think that goalies were great back then then magically got bad during Gretzky's era.

  • I agree with everything you said. These comments about how Gretzky wouldn't dominate today are just ridiculous. The game is not better today, & the fact that they legalized the two-line pass is a concession to the fact that players today are less talented. They are more athletic, but less talented. The younger generation of hockey fans is a bunch of morons who'd rather see Alex Kovalev do 5 dekes & not score than see Mike Bossy simply skate down the wing & blow it by the goalie.

  • @dzanier The game is better today, you're just a complete retard to deny it.

  • No sir. You're a retard. I said today's players are more athletic and better conditiones, but that doesn't mean they're better players. They are not. Fuck you you peckerbreath!!

  • @dzanier In other words - they're better players.

  • He was the best and still is the best...

  • Gretzky over rated? thats ridiculous, by far greatest player of all time, and i am sure most of his records will never be broken.

  • he just had the knack, the greatest natural goal scorer of all time without a shadow of a doubt...

  • It was actually more difficult to score back then...the hooking and holding was over the top. By today's standards there would be a penalty every single play. The prima donnas like Crosby and Ovechkin would not be scoring like Wayne in that era. It's preposterous. Gretzky and Lemieux tower over the modern stars. Even Lemieux as a 38 year old cancer survivor who could barely move on the ice with a wonky back still put up over 90 points in just over 60 games....in 2003...

  • @D0NKY -- good point! Also, when evaluating Gretzky you don't look at his athleticism, which was good, but not super, you look at his cleverness. He was the smartest offensive player I've ever seen. That's what kept other plays off balance and made it possible for him to score. Lemieux has cleverness and finess, and in that way was similar to Bobby Orr. Ovechkin and Crosby are great athletes, with some cleverness thrown in. They are all great to watch.

  • he really is the great one

  • Wow. I was the original person who made this .avi video like 10+ years ago. Can't believe it's now being watched on youtube. Crazy how things go down the line.

  • you are one dumb cunt.

  • Well obviously. It was 1981...

  • i wonder if Ovie will do 50 in 50 or come close to this record? He has 24 in 29 games so far this year...You can't really compare a winger like Ovie with a Centre like Gretzky imo. They are both great in their own ways.

  • I think he'll top out at about 65 goals in a season so it's possible but i don't think he'll do it.

  • Fucking Amazing. No one like him!

  • Gretzky deserves the name "the Great One", after all his career stats where no lie it actually happened, though I believe the goalies in his era played stand-up type so imagine Crosby or Ovechkin go back in Wayne's era, this topic really is pointless cuss he is why the goalies in our era had to evolve their game from stand up to the butter fly style.Let me say this, there where no other skater that skated like him on the ice nor matched the way he moved the puck around, I give him that.

  • The Sad part is we never get to see any other of his great plays. He has made passes that you will never see ever again. But where are they?

  • best player ever!!!

  • Ovechkin sucks gretzky rox! that simple

  • wow you are a disgrace to the game. you think you are a fan? Ovechkin brings so much to the NHL and you have no idea how much he is helping, and no he does not suck he is a professional hockey player, and the best in the nhl. gretzky was good, ovechkins time is now. gretzky will pass and just be another orr or gordie howe. every era has its hero and ovechkin is ours. you actually said he sucked.lol

  • LOL

  • Gretzky = G.O.A.T.

  • @B69ne maybe, maybe not. But certainly the MOST VALUABLE player ever!

  • walluZ, how can you say that with a straight face? Regardless of what he would or would not do in today's game, the fact remains that he still holds 40 regular-season records and 16 playoff records. How can you possibly claim he is overrated?

  • He scored 5 that night just because he hated those flyer pants so so much,

  • @shumirules1 mad

  • There would be another Gretzky if goalies didn't make themselves twice as big with their equipment. (I should know, I'm a goalie hahaha)

  • You piece of shit

  • There will never be another Wayne Gretzky.

The game is so much more different now than it was then, but Gretzky will always be the best.

  • i think you might be right. he was the best forward to ever play hockey

  • Gretzky is an overrated piece of shit.. just like any other of the 80's stars. They couldn't score shit nowadays when the goalies are much better.

  • False - in the late 90's, playing with a herniated back at nearly 40 yrs of age, Gretzky was still putting up nearly 100 pts. During his prime, he would have scored tons. Though known for his domination of the 80's, Gretzky still scored more points in the 90's than any other player. This is partially due to Lemieux missing time with cancer, of course, but still pretty amazing. The 90's were often lower scoring than today, and he still won 3 scoring titles with the kings, who were terrible.

  • @shazariahl And more remarkable. Remember how he gets all those assist because of his teamates in Edmonton? From 88-99, he gets 836 assists in 719 games! He still would have averaged the most assists per game ever, even if he never played a game in Edmonton!

  • Yeah 92 goals/163 assists/215 points in a season records, he is completely overrated.

  • gretzky on ice is 100x better then jordan on the hardwood

  • I'll start this comment off by saying I'm a Devils fan so I have no stake in the matter whatsoever. With that being said, AO has a career scoring average of 1.30 ppg, WG had a career scoring of 1.92 ppg. In order to catch WG, AO will have to maintain his 1.30 ppg average for almost 23 full seasons. Consider the fact that Messier is #2 on the scoring list. With his 1.07 ppg, he would have had to play another 11 seasons to catch WG. Come see me when AO is within a sniff of 2K career points.

  • You cant really compare stats from back then to now.

  • Why?

  • i think because (and i heard this somewhere but i dont remember) the nets were bigger back then and the equiptment wasnt as great. Im not saying that gretzky didn't deserve to be the best ever but if the nets and equiptment were the same now the ovy would have maybe 1.65 ppg. I'm not really sure though

  • the nets are the same size as they are today, I agree with the equipment being smaller back then but still no player has gotten beyond 120 points in the past 10 years or so.

  • yeah i noticed that now.....and i dont think that anyone has gotten past 120 points n the last like 10 years......

  • True, but Ovechkin isn't even dominating today's NHL. He lost the Art Ross to Malkin, and 2 years ago to Crosby. Gretzky owned that trophy for nearly a decade, and 3 times could have won it without even scoring a single goal. No one has ever dominated like that. True scoring was higher, and comparing between eras is hard, but Ovechkin hasn't really set himself apart from the other NHL greats, whereas Gretzky was beating everyone else by 70+ points.

  • You never know what can happen... if it's anything I've said before, sports can be highly unpredictable an sometimes even a little crazy.

I'm not saying Alex will be the next Gretzky or Messiah (Messier, I call him Messiah :P) but expect great things from him at least. He's pretty talented.

  • It's not just that Gretzky set all sorts of records, but that he completely obliterated the old ones. A few players had done 50 in 50, but then Gretzky does it in under 40? He would be the leading scorer in NHL history even if he never scored a goal.

It would be as if Bonds hadn't hit 760 home runs, but 1000 home runs. As though a single season homer record went from 60 to 90. Gretzky pushed the records so far as to make the old ones almost meaningless.

  • Indeed, but what also makes Gretzky special is that he's a class act. A genuine person, a humble gentlemen who epitomizes sportsmanship.

  • he got 50 goals in 50 games two other times as well !!!!! He was getting 200 points while the next guy in the league was getting nearly 80 points less. 4 200 + point seasons and a 196 point season..while only 1 one other player approached that area in 1 season..in the entire history of the game.complete and utter dominance

  • dudes bobby orr is second best. if they knew what we knew about kneww surgery back then he could habe been better than gretzky

  • Wayne is the best player ever and Mario is the second best. If Mario could have stayed healthy he maybe could of been the greatest. I hate who they played for but respect their skills. But best pure goal scorer was probably Mike Bossy if you base it on Goals per game average.

  • Gretzky blows bossy out of the water...bossy is overrated as a goal scorer. If you end gretzkys career at the same point as bossy ended his gretzky blows him away its not even close.

bossy scored 573 goals in 752 games. Gretzky Scored 600 goals in 718 games which is also 1 game earlier than mario got to 600 goals...so gretzky has to be considered the best goal scorer as well. The thing is after 91 hit by suter...he changed and beacme more of a setup man than a shooter.

  • it was so easy to score back then

  • bottom line is no one ever besides maybe mario has ever came close to what gretzky could do on the ice regardless of the time period or any of that bs

  • goalies were easy to beat back then.

  • So? The year Gretzky got 50 in 39, no one else had even broken 30 goals yet. Maybe goals were easier to score, but he was still scoring 60% more than everyone else in the league. Not like those guys sucked either - players like Dionne, LaFleur, and Bossy have gone down in history as some of the all time greats. He also had 3 seasons where he had more assists than anyone else had points. Sure maybe goals were easier to come by, but should just mean everyone had lots of points.

  • I bet if Wayne Gretzky was in his prime, playing in today's NHL, He would DOMINATE, just like if 1987-1993 Michael Jordan playing in the NBA right now.

  • ovechkin being better than gretzky is a fucking myth idiots fool themselves into believing because they want to think they're watching the best shit ever. i guess it helps them with their ego issues or whatever.

  • theyre all slapshots

  • Gretzky was known for his slapshot. Instead of shooting heel to toe (of the blade of the stick), he shot toe to heel. It causes the puck to rise unpredictable fast when it appears it should go low to a goalie.

  • Wayne wouldn't be that great if he was playing today. The talent got better, so if the platers are not scoring as much now, it's because of all the rules and talent from everyone, and strategies from the coaches which makes defensive play even better. Wayne does not know how to "dribble" the puck when he goes on a breakaway...all he does is slap it!

  • agreed, look at all these goalies, they just stand there and flail an arm, whereas today, the goalies actually move to make a save!

  • NDN: NO CLUE!!! You can't compare today's players to ones in the past without using a relative scale. Gretzky was miles above his peers. There is no one since Mario that has been even close. There are a dozen players with equal skill in the NHL right now. Look at the shots/goal stats if you think Ovechkin is the best right now. He is great...but not the Great One.

ps: If I was skateboarding in the 1970's, I would be the best in the world. It is called evolution and relativity. Stay in school.

  • Youre clueless, he was getting 200 pts a season when the next best were barely cracking 100. Regardless of what you think about the game then and now he was miles ahead of everyone, which cant be said for any other player since his retirement.

There is around a 5% goals per game difference between now and the 80's, gretzky has 92 goals/163 assist/215 point season records. To say he wouldn't be great is complete idiotic. Maybe not as good as he was then, but still better than anyone else.

  • @SuperColossal33

Ever heard of Mike Bossy dipshit? Highest goals/game in NHL history...do your research.

  • @riverthumper

dipshit? calm down there douche bag.

Bossy played a lot less seasons than Gretzky, his stats are inflated because of that (yes 40 year olds don't play like 25 year olds).

Not to mention Gretzky was practically doubling Bossy's points some seasons.

Crosby does not double Ovechkin's points.

  • @SuperColossal33 Mike Bossy has the highest goals /game percentage in NHL history.

  • @SuperColossal33 ur fucking dumb as shit..gretzky wouldnt even make the fucking ohl these days..fucking tool

  • @scrawfosean and you're an idiot.

  • @SuperColossal33 AHAHA ovechkin/crosby vs gretzky..GRETZKY WOULD GET FUCKING RAPED..he was awesome..in his time..times have changed..the nhl is more advanced and evolved then the 80's/90's u damn gretzky fanboy morons..

if gretzky started playing in 2005 or so he may have gotten 30 goals by now..not no fucking 200 points a fucking season u fucking twats..wheres ur fucking heads..

  • @scrawfosean wow you pulled that rant out of your ass

  • @SuperColossal33

Actually he was great even when the game was really defensive in the 90's.

in 1994 he won the art ross with 130 points at the age of 34.

He then had 102 points when he was 35 not many can do that.

at 36 he had 97 points and 37 he had 90 points and finished in 4th place that year.

So I totally agree with you Gretzky is the best player ever seen.

  • @SuperColossal33 lets compare gretzky to crosby/ovechkin talent wise..GOOD F*CKING GAME..gretzky was amazing in his time..he wouldnt be half as good post lockout..come on wheres your logic..jeezuss christ man

  • @scrawfosean where's your logic? Crosby and Ovechkin don't get much more points than 15 other NHL players.

Gretzky was DOUBLING the second best player in the league in points when he played.

  • Comment removed

  • @scrawfosean All his goals don't look the prettiest, but he basically re-wrote the NHL record book. Just because he doesn't move the quickest and make the best moves, he holds the puck, finds the open man, and hits the twine. Sure times have changed, but Gretzky would adapt in two games, max. I bet if Crosby went BACK in time he'd have no clue what was going on. Be completely lost.

  • @azerskater Dont bag on crosby, he is a great hockey player, maybe not as good as gretzky, but he is a great hockey player.

  • @azerskater I highly doubt that Crosby would be lost...he's more than likely the smartest hockey player out there right now...stop hating....the kid has some serious talent .

  • @SuperColossal33 Many players were cracking 100 points, don't get ahead of yourself now. Every season there were multiple players with over 50 or even 60 goals and multiple people were also getting over even 130 to 140 points. Lemieux had 199 points remember? I'd agree that he was amazing and will never be matched on the score sheet, but check your stats

  • @templetonbob Lemiuex aside, no other player has consistently been that far ahead of EVERYONE else in points.

  • @SuperColossal33 During the 4 years Gretzky scored over 200 pts, he averaged 210 while the 2nd scorer in those years averaged 137. The highest pt total we've seen in the 00s is Thornton's 125 in '06, in other words, nobody in a long time has approached the point totals that superstars not named Wayne used to put up during the 80s and up until roughly 1996. I'm sure Gretzky would have dominated any geneartion but he needed to be in the league during the 80s-90s in order to reach 200 pts.

  • @SuperColossal33 Imo Mario lemieus also was miles ahead of other players while he played his best.

  • Gretzky had over 200 points in 4 out of five seasons. The one season where he didn't hit 200 he got 199. No one else has ever got 200 points and he did it four times. That says it all for me.

  • 50 goals in 39 games will never be broken unless the rules change dramatically. Most players now days have trouble getting 50 in 82 games.

  • yes but the goalie equipment was much smaller back then...

  • Gretzky and Lemeiux are the best offencive players ever in my oppinioon, sure there are alot of other greats but those 2 obviously stick out in alot of peoples minds. No matter what though i still think the best modern day player is Alexander Ovechkin

  • and now the oilers suck.

  • dude gretzky was only good in the older times when the goalies werent as good and he wouldnt last a chance in the NHL now ovechkin can easily own him

  • Obviously the goalies weren't as good, but if Gretzky played now he would be that much better from playing against better competition. Compare the stats. No player is close to as dominant as he is he was (Lemieux would have had a chance, if it wasn't for the disease).

  • Lol, Ovechkin probably won't even win the scoring race this year. If he can even beat his current competition, how can you think he's better than Gretzky? Wayne won the scoring race by 79 points one year. He had 3 seasons he had more assists than anyone else had total points! The Oilers set scoring records with over 400 goals a season, and Wayne was accounting for over 200 points. That mean on the highest scoring team ever, 1 player was over 50% of their scoring. You think Ovi can match that?

  • Doubtful, but in this time period who else can people rely on to beat Gretzky's goal and point scoring records.... idk about point scoring records but goal scoring records. I still think AO is great. Look at the 80s when the goalies equiptment was half the size it is today, and look how good of shape alot of the players are today. I don't think AO will beat Wayne's records.....but ya never know

  • I agree AO is awesome; I didn't mean to sound like I was putting him down. He's my favorite player in the league right now. I also agree that of all the people currently playing, he's the only one with any kind of chance of beating Wayne's records.

But that chance is very, very small. Gretzky's 215 pt season is more than Malkin and Crosby had combined this year by 2 points.

  • that is amazing.... 5 goal in the game... damn fuck

  • Ovechkin is the new "Alexander The Great" if you people didint hear it yet. Gretzy was best in his era of hockey now its all about the new bright star. But in my opinion who ever said Ovechkin is not smart, you cant even back that argument up. Who the hell cares how he looks? Its about his over all ability to play hockey that matters, not his looks. Besides Gretzky was a goal scorer, Ovechkin is too, but he has an edge at his size. He plays a whole different game then Gretzky did.

  • LOL, Ov is better than Gretzky? Let's see where his stats are when he retires. The game was different back then, but nobody has ever played the game like him kid - and I say kid, because if you saw Gretzky in his day, not just a few replies, you would know! They don't call him the great one for nothing.

  • wow thats like 4 goals a game

  • lol.

  • is there any site with the statistics of the save percentage in that era and even before...i'd love to know the save percentage in the time of Maurice Richard.

it seems to me Ovechkin is better than Gretzky was

  • Why would compare Ovechkin to Gretzky? Gretzky is and always will be the best, fuck ovechkin that caveman looking faggot.

  • this is the best argument ever! i didnt think of that!

  • Average Ovechkin fanboi.

  • hes not better then Gretzky overall. Just in scoring, but Gretzky passes way better and is way smarter then ovechkin is

  • Yet another jackass that has no respect for the great players of the past. You must be 12 years old or you just started watching hockey.

Cause that is ridiculous. He's isn't called "The Great One" for nothing.

  • "is there any site with the statistics of the save percentage in that era and even before.... it seems to me Ovechkin is better than Gretzky was"

lol... ovechkin gets about a 100 points a season in his prime, while gretzky got about 150 on average in his career.

if you think it was THAT much easier to score back then, you're a deluded fool.

i remember comparing the league gpg average between lemieux's era and ovechkin's, and the difference turned out to be about 5%

  • oh yea if Detroit has a shitty goalie then why did we win the Stanley Cup last season and are on a roll right now

  • ya retard???

  • I'm a huge Gretz fan but people have to realize that in todays NHL he would be too slow and too small. the 1980's was an era of offense and no defense. Players were smaller back then and the goaltending was a lot weaker than today. Gretz also played with some of the greats on the Oilers. factor all that in and it's easy to see why Gretz did well. I'm not taking anything away from him because he was great and very smart. it was his NHL smarts that allowed him to still play in the 90's.

  • you are right but that can be said for all sports. Jack Johnson probably wouldnt hold the heavy weight title for long against today's boxers and the Babe Ruth era yankees wouldnt be able to handle A-Rod and the boys. However you have to take into account. However you have to take into account that most modern day players wouldn't hack it in the rougher style NHL of the 70's and 80's. It's an argument for the ages.

  • well when you say rougher style do you mean 70's 80's roughness with todays players size ?or do you mean 70's 80's roughness with 70's 80's players size as well?

  • well I mean today's players such as Sam Gagner and some of the smaller guys probably wouldn't hack it in the 70's and 80's, it was too chippy. However guys like Phil Esposito would probably get spun in circles playing today. They are just two different era's and styles of hockey and that has to be accounted for.
