He was a bit different. That's why I liked him. Quite a lot of the comments seem to focus on why and how he didn't fit the 'Shredder' mould. Fuck Shredders. Look, I like Satch as much as the next dude (who likes Satch) but this "not a real shredder" crap is note-nerd bullshit and it's degrading. Smash your moulds and grow the fuck up.
This guy might have been a party animal, but he was not a shred virtuoso. You can't become as great as Paul Gilbert or Steve Vai just by having fast hands, you need to practice 5-6 hours a day for a very long time.
Many of these old talentless shredders have crashed and burned along with Hair Metal, but the really talented and skilled shredders (Greg Howe, Gilbert, Satch, Vai,Friedman) have kept on making music because they are really in it for the music.

As for his dogs, it's already come out that he has over 20 dogs -- all rescued from abusive homes. A large dog escaped its pen and mingled with the small dogs, killing them. He proved he had an excavator scheduled to dig a burial site for them at the time of his arrest. Doesn't sound like a dog killer to me. But you? You sound like an asshole.

Vinnie was very original. He was at his best when he would follow the melody more. Very cool tech. with his middle finger. I saw them in 82 and could not figure out any of his weird scales. I did not notice the country influence as he uses his middle finger to pick a lot. I know he blew my mind with his speed picking. It was awesome.
