Saw Chris at Brownies on Ave A, and an amazing solo show supporting Dirt Floor at Bowery Ballroom. I f*ckin love this guy and his music. Easily top five of the most soulful cats ever. Love that his spirit lives on in Trixie. Chris, you're music will live on 4ever.....xo
I first saw Chris Whitley on some sort of television show almost 15 years ago, and the very next day I went and purchased a CD. I loved his music, it made such an impression on me that to this day I still have a couple of his songs pop into my head from time to time. NOBODY plays the guitar that way. NO. BO. DY. I appreciate Chris' originality and contribution to American music. How wonderfully soulful. May he rest in peace.
i was thinking of him after the 11/20 5 year anniversary so i decided to explore YT.this one, the 'automatic' on letterman 3/97, and 'make tthe dirt stick' Germany 1992 are making me sob uncontrollby! i also saw the trailer for a yet to be released DVD and it was chilling and actually awful to see, Chris in bed coughing his lungs out into a towel or something while in bed and also taking a slurp of tequila from a bottle in the same interview.you might wanna skip it i wish that i did
My only complaint is that it's 2 minutes long....When it ends, I just want more. Such a beautiful song from a beautiful soul. I have such sadness that so many (including me) never heard his music before he was gone...
I was watching an interview with Myles Kennedy and he mentioned this album. Thanks to myles I am now a huge Chis Whitley fan.To bad I couldn't have seen him play live.
I didnt dig Him doin Robert Johnson stuff but I hafta say this song is really good. Only the 3rd vid of Him Im hearing and think Ill listen to more stuff. (Glad I didnt stop @ Hellhound) This guy is OK.
Wish i could have met this great man. The music has imprinted my soul and it will be the soundtrack to my life always. this song has me in tears. God blesses you CW.
I miss him as well...I think he finally get it, which is a point of a high peak of music universal momentum...new lost world, let me feel he is at the end of his life or pretty close...because this is a really FuCking great song with a simple instrument and a voice that can reflect something unique in it...
Oh man just beautiful! I was fortunate enough to see him play in Charlottesville, va before he passed and was so touched and excited by the performance. thanks for the vid.
@tnoutside Great job with this video! It works perfectly with this beautiful song. You were lucky to meet Chris. Wow! That must have been so cool. Do you know if he knew-at the time he wrote this-that he was terminally ill?
Anyway, one of my favorite songs ever-not just for Chris, but of all time.
@tnoutside My husband and were privileged to see him play half a dozen times at venues around the midwest. He never failed to say hi and was the nicest guy you could ever care to meet. He was also the best dobro player i've ever listened to and he sang with the voice of an angel.. Now he has his wings. RIP Chris.

I meant to ask, I cannot find any version of "Phone Call From Leavenworth" by Chris himself here on the tube....maybe that would be a good project for somebody? There are some good covers already - just kind of need to hear Chris alot to keep sane, if that makes sense.
I was so happy to have recognized his greatness as soon as I met him, and I was lucky that he liked what I was doing in those days and we were able to make lots of recordings together and I do miss him daily for he was a great friend to have so thanx for this vid... Yann
Don't think (and this is not only a thought, it could even be the truth.....) that there's anyone who sings more from the heart than Chris did. There are more, sure, I know them too, but Chris....... keep listening over and over again. It's a pity btw, that Chris never sung with Dayna Kurtz.... could have been a precious combination.
RabbiBlue. Me neither, still got another six pack to finish off. Watching mostly ALL the posts on here lately, he's work is soo done. Guess they had to take him higher, pretty sure he's with my best friend now, they'll write some shit man!
Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Chris and seeing him play live was giving a gift of musical talent that they will never forget. Hopefully he is still writing music and performing in the next world.
chris w. was and is one of my all time favorites...
but i even didn´t know he lived in my home country the last time of his life...didn´t´hear anything about his death...can´t believe he was so underrated...only explenation for that is that he was maybe too good
How can someone write about death and sound so beautiful? this song mellows me down...i can imagine the words he sings and death suddenly doesn't feel that bad
the line, "there's a dirt floor underneath here, to receive us when changes fail", it's one of the best ever written. sigh...time to quit smoking ya'll.
my boyfriend Clifford Thomas Gomer Jr. loves this song andso do I

Thanks ever so much for posting!
Goose bumps, the way he sings and plays.
And the words, my goodness how true they ring.
And his facial expression at 0:40 almost makes me cry.
The video is so touching, too.
Thanks again and best wishes for the new year from the NL!

I am the guy who made this vid. I met Chris several times. He was so very kind and humble.
I like that this page has become a sort of memorial to CW and that people have posted their farewells to him here. That was unexpected but beautiful.
RIP Chris.
