I've had no problems with my M3 rocking an SMG II transmission. Shifts like silk and is faster than any of you shifting your manual gears.

Guys - I don't know who has been feeding you the BS, but the BMW e60 M5 DOES come in a 6-speed manual. Yes you can get an SMG with paddle shifters, but THAT IS NOT A TRUE MANUAL SHIFT. I have a 2007 M5 with a six (6) speed MANUAL transmission. Came that way straight from the factory.

I heard that only the SMG keeps the engine on the boil and the manual doesn't. I've never seen many tests of the E60 manual M5, so I'm genuinely curious.

I used to own a 1999 M3 with a SMG transmission but the SMG kept breaking down

even after replacing the whole transmission with a new one!!

They should make M5 and M6 with a stick shift transmission!!!

@057gnb3316sef6 I'm not familiar if the current SMG III and past SMG II have any major issues like your 99 M3, but you do realize it's been over 10 years since the SMG I on your car has been released. It'd be better to go to the dealership and test drive the M5 and M6 rather than basing assumptions on outdated experiences- just my opinion.

The E60 is alright looking, sometimes in the right color and wheels beautiful but you're right the E46 KILLS the E92, the E46 has a timeless look, just gorgeous. I took the E55 and not the M5 because of the better daily driveablity and the interior, otherwise the M5 is a BEAST. The E55 is faster but I did test drive the M5 and it was just ALIVE, the engine is so energetic, definitely better for track days, better handling too.

Are you trying to teach me about the car I drive? The E55 is faster than the E63 and the M5, that's due to the torque made by the 55k being more than the 6.3 and the V10. I personally, stock with R888 Toyo street tires, ran 11.97, same day at Sacramento strip there were a few 55s and 63s as well as M5s: NO 63 or M5 broke 11 and they were all HIGH 12s. The fastest 55s do high 10s, no E63 has ever ran a 10 let alone a low 11. Don't be a keyboard tough guy, believe me, the 55 IS faster.

OK kid you're right, arguing with you is futile. I have driven the E63 and the E60 M5 by the way, it was between the M5 and the E55 for me and unless you're on a road course track like the Nurburgring the E55 with EAT the M5, around city streets the torque and the tranny of the 55 would kill the M5. The M5 is a horrible daily compared to the Merc, the gearbox is just too shaky and jittery. Nothing pushes you into your seat like low end torque, you literally feel it, go for a test drive and see..
