In the comics Jean Grey is described as an Omega Level Mutant which means she was almost unlimited psionic powers, and that is WITHOUT the Phoenix. With the Phoenix shes pretty much omnipotent.

Jean Grey wouldn't be squat if it weren't for the phoenix force. In the animated series Jean was always the weak one who was always passing out. I don't know why she's considered one of the most powerful x-men. Now if Storm was possessed by the Phoenix that would be awsome.

that's also why she's cool. She's a little like Xavier, seemingly vulnerable at first and then it turns out secretly she's amazingly powerful.
