I, unfortunately wasnt able to march with a black college band, or black high school band, but we had the same rules in the white bands too, you broke the bands ranks you got severely dealt with and the we really didnt care about the consequences.....and it was the same thing in my drum corps as well......if you aint the band type of person or at half ass know the rules, just stay back and watch from a distance......it just may save your life.

I read through the comments and saw a lot of people talking aboiut disipline. Saying that the band sticks together in whatever happens. A band with disipline can stay impassive when something happens. You gotta take the shit. You don't change your attitude no matter what happens.
You don't knock necessarily knock them down. Just keep em from going through the band. You don't have to start an unnecessary fight. Still, if there's a whole bunch of people in uniform in a line/formation/seated together/doing-ANYTHING-together it seems like common sense not to go through them.

.But you as an organization (I say organization cause it effects everyone) needs to have enough self-control to not act on it if someone does break your rank. If you see them outside the stadium while your not wearing your uniform, then that's your business. I don't know how SU handled this, but many schools would drop your scholarship and kick you out of the program.

Heh Well HBCUs and bands of the sort have a kind of law almost. (Everyone may not call it that but it basicaly is.)It says that if someone cuts the ranks they're basicaly done for. Teach them a lesson to never cut it again. Its not like they open spaces in ranks to beat someone up on purpose but if it happens that's that for the person. Now it can be very stupid I admit but its one of the things that keep the band together. And on the discipline topic it sort of is. Its almost instinctive

The police had to run to save her.

I participated in this ass woopin.Southern Heritage Classic.I think 92or93,anyway,this dude and two others was told to many times to"get the fuck"but Fat Meat really is Greasy!He got too close to the rail and poked "OPP"(pronounced HOP without the H)(Funk Factory Section Leader)in the chest.Then "OPP"(cock strong by the way)grabbed him and pulled him over the rail AND OH MY.Everybody hit him except 2 Dancing Dolls.
Let me get this straight, he was told "to many times to get the fuck"; failing to get the fuck, he mistakenly got too close to the rail, accidentally poking OPP, right? Next, OPP grabbed and pulled him over the rail, followed by the rest of the Southern University band, including you, committing a mass battery on this spectator. Is that correct?
I understand what you're saying, but the guy motioned as if he'd produce a weapon at any moment. The incident i was involved in happened way before cell phones, so going to find a pay phone would've been too late. As far as the PV game is concerned, I was long gone by the time that happened, so I can't speak to that.
Again, I don't condone fighting, but sometimes you do have to defend yourself.
Oh no, it may appear that way, but i'm sure we aren't the only band that's had altercations before. As bad as it feels after the fact, we respond like anyone else would. Also, we took criticism like all bands do, not everyone thought we sound good, but that's no reason to beat someone up. Generally, it was a physical threat that got us wound up.
The Prairie View incident was caused because their band (PVU)would not move as Southern was trying to exit the field after their halftime performance. That was the spark for that unfortunate melee. It was not pleasant for either school.
I was just in highschool when it happened, so for the record, I wasn't there. Anyway, here's my question: Wouldn't the right thing have been for SU's band to stop where they were and let the directors or whoever was in charge take care of it? I'm just curious as to how this type of thing should be handled.
I'm not sure where the directors were at the time this occurred. Usually, the band that is waiting will not totally line up on the side in which the visiting band will exit until after the performance. Another question could be, why didn't PVU's directors tell the band members to move when they saw SU marching off the field to end their performance? Members of both bands should have respected themselves and their prestigious universities a lot better on that day.
P.s., I'm in no way condoning this; hpwever, you don't know what he may have said. When I was in the band, one guy said he would shoot the whole band. While that may have only been just talk, it didn't appear as such at the time - we had to get him. I'm sure many of you if faced with the same situation would have reacted the same way (if we all fought, chances are he would;ve thought twice about carrying out that threat).

I think anybody that has a huge problem with this has never been in a hbcu band before (or a "black" band rather) Adrenaline is HIGH especially right after the halftime show. We're a family, we weather the august heat together and the December cold together. so we won't hesitate to whoop yo ass together. i mean if you hit a band member in the chest, you betta apologize and it betta hav been an accident cuz if you fight one of us you fightin all of us and you gon get treated like that...

The football teams are the competition. Now when it's a battle of the bands/band competiton then I wouldn't care for negative,insulting comments

I participated in this ass woopin.Southern Heritage Classic.I think 92or93,anyway,this dude and two others was told to many times to"get the fuck"but Fat Meat really is Greasy!He got too close to the rail and poked "OPP"(pronounced HOP without the H)(Funk Factory Section Leader)in the chest.Then "OPP"(cock strong by the way)grabbed him and pulled him over the rail AND OH MY.Everybody hit him except 2 Dancing Dolls.

I understand what you're saying, but the guy motioned as if he'd produce a weapon at any moment. The incident i was involved in happened way before cell phones, so going to find a pay phone would've been too late. As far as the PV game is concerned, I was long gone by the time that happened, so I can't speak to that.
Again, I don't condone fighting, but sometimes you do have to defend yourself.

Oh no, it may appear that way, but i'm sure we aren't the only band that's had altercations before. As bad as it feels after the fact, we respond like anyone else would. Also, we took criticism like all bands do, not everyone thought we sound good, but that's no reason to beat someone up. Generally, it was a physical threat that got us wound up.

The Prairie View incident was caused because their band (PVU)would not move as Southern was trying to exit the field after their halftime performance. That was the spark for that unfortunate melee. It was not pleasant for either school.

I was just in highschool when it happened, so for the record, I wasn't there. Anyway, here's my question: Wouldn't the right thing have been for SU's band to stop where they were and let the directors or whoever was in charge take care of it? I'm just curious as to how this type of thing should be handled.

I'm not sure where the directors were at the time this occurred. Usually, the band that is waiting will not totally line up on the side in which the visiting band will exit until after the performance. Another question could be, why didn't PVU's directors tell the band members to move when they saw SU marching off the field to end their performance? Members of both bands should have respected themselves and their prestigious universities a lot better on that day.

P.s., I'm in no way condoning this; hpwever, you don't know what he may have said. When I was in the band, one guy said he would shoot the whole band. While that may have only been just talk, it didn't appear as such at the time - we had to get him. I'm sure many of you if faced with the same situation would have reacted the same way (if we all fought, chances are he would;ve thought twice about carrying out that threat).
