  • and bigkev, the boat has a small propellor underneath the paddlewheel. i was told it is used as a saftey procaution when she ia coming in and out of dock because it can become difficult when docking and before she had the emergency propellor she was beach on the rocks next to the pier and so to prevent that from happening the propellor was installed.

  • hi bubbbs. does the minne have a diesel engine too? or just the diesel generator?

  • @metsfan0618 The Minne has a diesel engine and 2 diesel generators. You are correct in your explanation of why we use the diesel engine, and generators are used to make the electricity for her lights and other systems :)

  • i kind of wish this Ship still had the Skylight and the dancefloor, but they took them out to make more room on her deck, i was just on her this past wednesday she ran beautifully, then she went out thursday night for her fireworks cruise but she didnt use her Paddlewheel nor her Steam it was odd her Diesel motor made her go slower then the steam boilers

  • @bigkevcxza The skylight was nice to have, but it acted like a greenhouse and made the inside of the second deck very hot. Since we decked it over, it's been a lot cooler down there. And were the engines not used just during the fireworks or throughout the entire trip? If she's out for fireworks, they usually use the diesel engine to keep her positioned for the best viewing angle and then use the engines for the rest of the trip once the fireworks show is over.

  • I miss the Minne Ha Ha like this. This was my favorite. I wish they never changed it. I liked it this size.

  • @hawaii197 Yeah, she was an attractive vessel, but I'm just glad that they've kept her running, especially when so many other steamboats have gone by the wayside in recent years (a shame since it was steamboats that helped build this country in the first place)

  • @bubbbs2 You have a point there. How soes a calliope actually work?

  • @hawaii197 A calliope is basically an organ that is run on steam. There are 32 notes (2 1/2 octaves), and it's played by a small keyboard. One pushes the key on the keyboard, and an electrical signal is sent to a device connected to the steam line leading to the whistle. This device opens the valve and allows steam to pass from the manifold (large cylindrical tube that whistles sit on) into the whistle once it receives this signal.

  • was this video really taken in 1987? I went to Lake George on July 4, 2009 and caught Minne-Ha-Ha making music, on tape. Seems like the boat was also repainted as well, since the font used to write "MINNE-HA-HA" on that boat is different in this video than when I was up there in Lake George.

  • Yes, this video was shot in 1987. The boat was lengthened in 1998-1999 and the name was repainted on the side at the time

  • Now that explains the 1998-1999 Minne-Ha-Ha renovation I hear about. The first time I was in Lake George was in 2002. I heard that there used to be another steamboat in Lake George named Ticonderoga until 1993. Do you know what happened to that boat? Because it's not there anymore; the steamboats in Lake George is Lac du Saint Sacrement, Minne-Ha-Ha, and Mohican, as of right now.

Also, could you get rid of the Hitler comment that was just posted? That idiot is basically harassing me.

  • When the "Saint" was put into service in 1989, the "Ti" was put on the north end of the pier as a floating snack bar. When that turned out to be a failing enterprise, the boat was scrapped in 1993.

And if anyone wants to have a comment battle, don't do it on my videos or my page. I don't know you and I would appreciate that you do it somewhere else. Thank you

  • I see; So this means that Ticonderoga was in standstill between 1989 and 1993? And was Ticonderoga docked where Saint Sacrement is docked now?

And thanks for writing the comment battle message below my reply. You can block users who are doing "comment battles". There is one idiot who is harassing me by referring me as Hitler and won't stop. Even though I blocked him, he continue to harass me through videos I comment on.

  • The "Ti" was docked from 1989 to 1993 on the side where there are no boats now, but back when she operated, she docked where the Mohican is now.

And I did block him. I'm not gonna have that going on on my stuff. You two can wage ur war somewhere else. I don't know you and I'd really appreciate to not have those things here.

  • I just got back from Lake George and while I was boarding my LAC DU SAINT SACREMENT dinner cruise, I noticed that they had painted an arrow head and tail around the words "Minne Ha Ha"

  • hey bubba are those the stacks that are now the archway to the minne

  • yeah, those are the ones

  • Hi bubbbs... Im gonna be in Lake George memorial day weekend. Did you start working on the calliope yet? Ive been practicing calliope music on my keyboard... I gotta say Im getting good!

  • no, I'm still in school, but I'll be working on it the week before she starts her season.

  • i used to wake up hearin it below decks

i think that was probaly the worst part about the job

  • How could anyone be bothered by hearing this? You worked on the ship?

  • i worked on the lac Du saint sacrament last summer

it sounded bad when your trying to sleep and its warming up

  • ya well maybe u should wake the F up and clean decks, though i do have to admit their hell on a hangover

  • Yes, thanks for the questions. It's always nice to talk to someone who's interested in the calliope. As of now, there is one captain who still uses the calliope to warm it up, but you're right, they all need to to make it sound halfway decent. Happy New Year and I hope to see you in Lake George this spring!

  • well, Im not really on a schedule. I have to say that not only am I not the best player in the world, but the keyboard doesn't react very well since the system has been automatic for so long, so don't expect too much. Just tell me when you're going to be here and I'll see what I can do. To answer you're second question, yes it does sound much better warmed up. If you don't push the condensation out first, all you get is water for the first few measures.

  • Maybe you can just use the keyboard to warm her up for now.... Anyway, thanks for all the info man, I appreciate it. Have a happy new year.

  • Why dont they tune the present day calliope on the Minnie Ha Ha before playing it? After seeing this video I realized how beautiful it used to sound, now it sounds terrible. Does anyone know if the present day caliope can be played by a person or it is only computer controlled?

  • yes, it can be played by a person, as I have done it a couple times, but most of the time it is played by a tape player. I work for the Lake George Steamboat Company, and it is interesting you ask about tuning it because next spring I plan to repaint, polish and tune in an attempt to make it sound better. I'll try to post some new videos afterwards, but i dont think that after all that work it would sound any worse than it does now.

  • Thats great. This spring I will be in Lake George as I am every year. What week do you think youll be playing the calliope on the Minnie? I would really enjoy hearing it being played by a talent and not a tape. Regardless Im looking forward to hearing the difference after your maintenance work. Also dont you think there would be a difference if they warmed it up first like they used to?

  • OK,,, WHO was Playing,,.???

,,I know who it sounds like,, but Im afraid to say,,,... This was 21 years ago,RITE,,,?? IT sounds pretty d@mn good to ME,,..
