only in america would you find a run off that had mounds of gravel to stop vehicles, what was wrong with digging out a proper runaway trap filled with gravel or sand, like the ones you get over here in U.K., when you see a vehicle that has had to use one, not very often over here by the way, they at least stay upright because they have been stopped gradually but firmly in a short distance, why do you think they dont have mounds of sand at the side of a race.
All the ramps I've seen are perfectly groomed. They all should be, because anyone who uses them has to pay to have them redone. At least that's how it's done here.
Actually, it didn't do it's job. Most such ramps have the gravel down the center, slowly rising in height to drag on the underside of trucks to slow them down.
Many trucks don't have a jake brake, and one this small is extremely unlikely to have one.
Drivers should keep their speed under control, but things DO break unexpectedly. You can go down a hill too slow (being cussed at by cars) thousands of times, but you can go down it too fast only once.
Runaway applies to anything where there is no stopping. There can be a train driver in the cab but if the brakes don't work to slow or stop the train then it is a runaway. Trucks are the same way. Without the air in the brakes the trucks are mainly like a missile. Luckily the truck drivers have a choice what their missile hits thus the invention of runaway truck ramps.
Sometimes there are just huge hills that have runaway ramps. Say your brakes give out, the ramp will save your life instead of going off the mountain. Looks like the ramp was too steep of an incline though.
well if it was put in park it would simply break the extremely small parking paw that holds the vehicle from moving when stopped. Automatics have a safety feature that if u slam it in reverse it just simply cuts off the engine. Doesn't slow u down any.
@puremadman77 the reason that happened to the truck is bc you have to "jake" a truck, or engine brake..you put it in a low gear so the rolling resistance due to engine rotation is higher. If the truck starts speeding up on you down hill and you cant control it with engine braking, you're gonna burn out your brakes really fast and become a runaway truck
That was a 1 ton van 15ft box., no jake. Possibly a diesel, but only a small 4 cyl turbo diesel. Looked like maybe a Mitsubishi. Probably overloaded. Had a local driver bring us truck tires chains in bags, on skids in a similar box truck. I unloaded it with a forklift and it had 15,000 lbs of weight in it. That's 7 TONS of weight. He said it was a little hard to stop coming off the interstate. I wonder why?
It is not that simple, think of the weight and miles these trucks have on them, constant, every day. If the truckers had to stop once a week or more, to have breaks and what not inspected and maintained, imagine the price increase of all the products shipped with trucks. These run-a-way ramps are put there for the TRUCKERS in the unfortunate need.
Dunno where you are, but here all vehicles have to pass a test once a year, if they fail they can not be used on the road. By not keeping the trucks maintained they not only risk their own l;ives, but the lives of others on the road, so you are saying money is worth more than life?
Yeah once a year, hell once every 6 months is good, but in order to be almost positive your breaks wont fail, they would need to be inspected/maintained weekly. Which is what you make it sound like they need to do. I never said they do not or should not do it, just that it is B.S that they would need to do it all the time.
if u listin this ramp has been hit many times. IT ISNT WHO MADE IT FAULT!!! It is the goverments fault for not maintaining it after a truck has used it. I drive a 18wheeler this is just sad to see this type of crap. A thing that is suppose to save us drivers makes it worse for us. See where your money goes!!!
HAHAHAH!!!, you gotta love the great state of Pennsylvania, always hire the lowest bidder, doesnt matter how good it'll be just so its cheap, and the ramp was recently re-done to flat gravel in the past year or two
They are like that out east in the Smokey mountain region. Some rather unfriendly ones on I-70 in the Rockies. The point is to stop the truck without taking out other vehicles, and hopefully the driver makes it too.
Wrong gravel grade and type is most likely the issue here. The whoops arn't necessary when you do the deceleration bed right. That guy got one hell of a pounding. Hope that story got it fixed.
whoever this idiot engineer was that designed that should be removed from duty and placed into a non shored deep narrow hole in the ground of loose wet soil. Clearly he was cheating his way through engineering 101.
Even if the driver was maintaining a safe speed down the hill, and even if he did check his brakes in the morning before leaving the yard, failures still occur. I used to drive rescue trucks for an EMS department. These were large (kenworth) chassis vehicles. We inspected them daily and performed insane amounts of preventive maintenance. We still had the occasional failure. Not everything is preventable.

Oh, thats probably why we don't have any. Miami is almost completely flat. I remember how weird I felt when I was driving through the hills in North Florida when I went camping last winter. Well, thanks for the info.
Seatbelt won't keep you from hitting the ceiling - not your standard 3-point harness anyway. That's why rally drivers use 5-point harnesses... because it's EXPECTED that they may hit the ceiling.
kids, runaway ramps are for combination semi's only, this is a good example when a light boxtruck attempts to use what is designed to sink 80,000 pounds.
the driver is Lucky he did not die in that death trap of a cabover.
If this had been a car, they would have been killed instantly.
Mhm. So, according to you, he should have just kept moving. Also according to you, a semi duly using it in that condition wouldn't have had the slightest problem. Silly driver; you'd teach him a thing or two, wouldn't you?
Wow how stupid are some of you people. That runaway ramp is made for downhill traveling. Since trucks are so big and heavy sometimes there brakes fail. Thus is the reason for the sand ramp made to slow down a truck if it's brakes fail. So please if your too stupid shut up.
Dude, go drive a truck, and try going down hill. I have gone down that very hill, its 6% all the way down. Use your brakes and they will burn up in no time at all. Thats what happened to this guy, its not that he was going to fast, he lost his brakes. Amature driver. Unless you have a CDL, you are an AMATURE
6% for how long, u can make it down a hill that steep with a heavy load. Of course your probably one of the ones who try to go down flying and then wonder why ur brakes wont slow you down. I've went down plenty of 6 and 7% grades with heavy loads and made it down without smoking my brakes or having to hit the escape ramp. Its called controlled descent, but u probably never learned that term did you. And yes I do have a CDL before you say anything. And by the way its AMATUER not amature
What's a runaway truck? It's a truck that's lost braking power, usually from brake fade due to long, heavy braking with a heavy load (typically downhill in mountainous areas). Trucks are particularly susceptible to it due not only to driving under such conditions, but also to the type of brakes on many truck which are sensitive to changes in temperature brought about by such conditions.
First I don't own a car, I have a pickup, second it don't weigh 60k going down hill. I run heavy loads all the time and make it down steep hills with no problem. I come across 68 last night thru west virginia and maryland with a 45,000 lb load of paper and I made it down. As for checking the brakes, that's a D.O.T. requirement which a lot of people don't do. Like I said ignorance and I'm adding negligence to the list too. Good Night!
I hear you. I can't count how many times I've been down steep downgrades with heavy loads. I just went down Monteagle on 24 there in Tennessee last Friday with 44,000 and made it down with no problem. Only used the service brakes four times, people just don't realize that if you take your time and DOWNSHIFT and go SLOW, you wouldn't have to use the brakes as much. Of course brakes being in correct adjustment help a lot too.
I have seen a lot of people smoke their brakes going down Monteagle. Like you, I just run a lower gear and use the service brake a few times to drop back to the speed I want to run.
You can go down the mountain too slow a bunch of times. Too fast, maybe just once.
Yeah me too, I love when they get to going to fast and run into your lane in the curves. I think 50% of the trucks that go down through there usually have the brakes smoking by the time they get to the bottom. Seen one in the escape ramp thats on the left thats about a mile down, another hundred feet and he would have run out of room. Makes you wonder how fast he was going when he hit it.
Also, great camerawork. So many times the jackass holding the camera is so shocked by the action, that he aims the camera down so he can look above the eyepiece. That's why so many YouTube videos suck right at the height of the action. Idiots who don't know how to operate a camera.
I would do better. You don't aim the camera at the ground just so you can get a better view yourself. That's what many a camera operator does. Jackasses. The guy in this clip is great, just like me.
Sue the state because the driver was ignorant and cant control his speed on a hill? If anything he ended up giving the state money and his company paid to get that ramp fixed, unless things changed in the last four years. What a genius.
Well, genius, it is obvious that the ramp is out of service, not poorly designed. Driver should have maintained control? The ramps are designed to help a truck in an emergency situation, like if the brakes go out, etc. The ramp should have either been signed 'out of service', or repaired if the sign was to remain. This is grounds for action against the state. It is called 'deliberate indifference'; the state knew or should have known and did not make repairs. Stay on topic, my comment stands.
Ok genius how about this one, if he was going down at a safe speed or otherwise controlling his descent would he have had to hit the ramp. More than likely not. Like I said before sue the state because of his ignorance. That would be like buying a saw that says keep hands away from spinning blade and then sticking my hand in there to see what happened. Uh oh gotta sue black & decker, their saw cut my finger off. Get with the program man. And if his brakes couldn't slow him down, then the peice
of crap shouldn't have been on the road in the first place. The fact of the matter is, if people would learn to drive like they got some since and not drive something with faulty brakes, we wouldn't need to have escape ramps like this one. I just cant get over how people want to sue someone else cause they are ignorant and/or flat out stupid. Just doesn't make since to me.
If you think we dont need the ramps, then write your congressman and change the law. If the ramp is signed open, then the state has the responsibility to maintain it. that's not my opinion, simply the law. If you want to discuss intelligently, fine, But when your brakes go out or another emergency occurs, speed doesn't matter. that is the definition of an emergency. Either way, if the ramp is open, it has to be maintained. It is called Deliberate Indifference (by law) if not. look it up.
i supose you've never had your brakes go out while driveing. thats when it normaly occurs. scary as hell. yea you might check your brakes it the morning but driving 12 to 16 hours it a day you dont realy get to stop and check your brakes out. yea i check mine every morning and always have but my brakes went out on me on a 6% grade. thank god the road was straight otherwise id be screwed. in my pete my speedo pegs at 100 and it was going well past that. its unpredictable when your brakes go
Here in the uk we have the same kind of thing - crawler lanes and run-off lanes, but the real problem here is that there is often not enough room because a lot of steep roads are built in narrow channels so if a truck goes out of control the only option is to crash.
As for breaking - once your out of control engine breaking will just smash the engine or clutch, the only option is the main breaks. Actually what we see here are truck fires because the breaks have overheated.
I know it's PA. I was responding to the bloke from the UK who said they have runaway truck ramps. It surprised me because England, for the most part is quite flat.
@pf126p If you ever go up past the Midlands, it gets hillier. The flats are down in the south. I've seen some runaway ramps on the roads in England before. In some places, they're needed that's for sure.
not a bad concept. . . for gasoline engines-- but since most rigs are diesel it would not work-- on a steep grade you can accelerate through the gears and not even touch the gas. not every truck has exhaust brakes either.
he's talking about engine braking. and diesels generate far more engine breaking effect than gasoline.. you obviously haven't driven a diesel vehicle at all, atleast not one with a manual transmission.
was the driver all right?

Are you a moron? Those ramps are for trucks that loose their brakes on downhill roads.
Boatright 3 years ago 11
Apparently you don't understand the concept of a "runaway truck."
pf126p 3 years ago
wat is it?
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
What's a runaway truck? It's a truck that's lost braking power, usually from brake fade due to long, heavy braking with a heavy load (typically downhill in mountainous areas). Trucks are particularly susceptible to it due not only to driving under such conditions, but also to the type of brakes on many truck which are sensitive to changes in temperature brought about by such conditions.
pf126p 3 years ago
ok then why does that sign say, "runaway trucks only?"
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
Um... to discourage people from using it as a rest stop or such...
pf126p 3 years ago
ok doesnt make sense
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
What doesn't make sense?
pf126p 3 years ago
why would ppl stop there to take a rest??
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
Actually, norfolk, not to put too fine a point on it, but it actually doesn't say that. It says, "runaway truck ramp."
pf126p 3 years ago
so wat are you saying?
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
What are YOU saying? What is your question? I've answered everything you've asked.
pf126p 3 years ago
ok i didnt know wat a runaway was, and why would ppl rest there??
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
I dunno. People pull over for all sorts of reasons. Maybe to take a leak.
pf126p 3 years ago
lol you go that right, but i just dont know why they would put that sign up
norfolkdash9 3 years ago
The dign is posted so that 1. the truckers know it's clear and 2. drivers keep it clear, lest they cause an accident.
pf126p 3 years ago
My thoughts exactly, that or check his brakes better in the morning.
biggare1980 3 years ago
do you check your brakes every morning before you get in the car?
danefir3 3 years ago
First I don't own a car, I have a pickup, second it don't weigh 60k going down hill. I run heavy loads all the time and make it down steep hills with no problem. I come across 68 last night thru west virginia and maryland with a 45,000 lb load of paper and I made it down. As for checking the brakes, that's a D.O.T. requirement which a lot of people don't do. Like I said ignorance and I'm adding negligence to the list too. Good Night!
biggare1980 3 years ago
You can check the brakes all you want. They get too hot they're gonna fail. Thats why they have runaway truck ramps. Some people forget to downshift.
56BUICKRiviera 3 years ago 2
Of course brakes being in correct adjustment help a lot too.
biggare1980 3 years ago 2
Words of wisdom brother, words of wisdom.
56BUICKRiviera 3 years ago 2
I have seen a lot of people smoke their brakes going down Monteagle. Like you, I just run a lower gear and use the service brake a few times to drop back to the speed I want to run.
You can go down the mountain too slow a bunch of times. Too fast, maybe just once.
Greg9942 3 years ago

But this one's great.
DominicMetal1979 4 years ago 8
As if you would do any better
jigglesnap 4 years ago
I would do better. You don't aim the camera at the ground just so you can get a better view yourself. That's what many a camera operator does. Jackasses. The guy in this clip is great, just like me.

definite lawsuit against the county or state on this one.
bulletman100 4 years ago
Sue the state because the driver was ignorant and cant control his speed on a hill? If anything he ended up giving the state money and his company paid to get that ramp fixed, unless things changed in the last four years. What a genius.
biggare1980 3 years ago
Well, genius, it is obvious that the ramp is out of service, not poorly designed. Driver should have maintained control? The ramps are designed to help a truck in an emergency situation, like if the brakes go out, etc. The ramp should have either been signed 'out of service', or repaired if the sign was to remain. This is grounds for action against the state. It is called 'deliberate indifference'; the state knew or should have known and did not make repairs. Stay on topic, my comment stands.
bulletman100 3 years ago 4
Ok genius how about this one, if he was going down at a safe speed or otherwise controlling his descent would he have had to hit the ramp. More than likely not. Like I said before sue the state because of his ignorance. That would be like buying a saw that says keep hands away from spinning blade and then sticking my hand in there to see what happened. Uh oh gotta sue black & decker, their saw cut my finger off. Get with the program man. And if his brakes couldn't slow him down, then the peice
biggare1980 3 years ago
of crap shouldn't have been on the road in the first place. The fact of the matter is, if people would learn to drive like they got some since and not drive something with faulty brakes, we wouldn't need to have escape ramps like this one. I just cant get over how people want to sue someone else cause they are ignorant and/or flat out stupid. Just doesn't make since to me.
biggare1980 3 years ago
If you think we dont need the ramps, then write your congressman and change the law. If the ramp is signed open, then the state has the responsibility to maintain it. that's not my opinion, simply the law. If you want to discuss intelligently, fine, But when your brakes go out or another emergency occurs, speed doesn't matter. that is the definition of an emergency. Either way, if the ramp is open, it has to be maintained. It is called Deliberate Indifference (by law) if not. look it up.
bulletman100 3 years ago
i supose you've never had your brakes go out while driveing. thats when it normaly occurs. scary as hell. yea you might check your brakes it the morning but driving 12 to 16 hours it a day you dont realy get to stop and check your brakes out. yea i check mine every morning and always have but my brakes went out on me on a 6% grade. thank god the road was straight otherwise id be screwed. in my pete my speedo pegs at 100 and it was going well past that. its unpredictable when your brakes go

Eh? I thought England was pretty flat...
pf126p 3 years ago
it's in Pennsylvania... It says it at the start, "Carbon County, Pennsylvania."
musewolfman 3 years ago
I know it's PA. I was responding to the bloke from the UK who said they have runaway truck ramps. It surprised me because England, for the most part is quite flat.
pf126p 3 years ago
no its not, not once you get up past the midlands
fireflybuzzbuzz 3 years ago
@pf126p If you ever go up past the Midlands, it gets hillier. The flats are down in the south. I've seen some runaway ramps on the roads in England before. In some places, they're needed that's for sure.
ShokaLion 1 year ago
not a bad concept. . . for gasoline engines-- but since most rigs are diesel it would not work-- on a steep grade you can accelerate through the gears and not even touch the gas. not every truck has exhaust brakes either.
amishrockstar 4 years ago
he's talking about engine braking. and diesels generate far more engine breaking effect than gasoline.. you obviously haven't driven a diesel vehicle at all, atleast not one with a manual transmission.
