why look down? the pedals are there , do you look at the gear stick when changing gear in a car ? no , just practice practice practice, ride your bike from home as if your in a race, if it doesent work for you just step over clip in and push off , simplicity is genius, and of course have the bike in a LOW gear.... now go and practice and enjoy ;)
