Have you ever wondered how the captain and sailor in HMS Pinafore could be switched at birth when their 20 years apart in age? "Two On The Aisle's" Charles Gross & Leslie (Hoban) Blake find out when they enter the topsey turvey world of New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players founder and artistic director, Albert Bergeret. This is splendidly sung and deserves full applause. All this, plus (if you didn't know) there is a second act to follow where the Fairy Queen again gets exactly what she Willis.
W S Gilbert always intended for his lyrics to be updated (as in the Mikado's 'Little List') as required. However, one updated version isn't always going to go down too well with some. Having seen a production of Iolanthe during the expenses scandal, I can vouch that Iolanthe is and always shall be subject to political change, but thankfully the beautiful music always remains the same.
Also, "In the Parliamentary hive Liberal or Conservative Whig or Tory" was changed to "Labour or Conservative left or right wing?" I hate updates like that.
Actually, I was joking. They say "Stephon's a member of parliment" about 800 times. (I love G&S but there is a fair amount of redundancy in their lyrics.)

This grates. Too staccato. Chorography is great.

No fox hunting? No heriditary peerage? And this is Tony's agenda?
How prescient were they?
THis is sort of freaking me out right now!

The final chorus sounds as though it is being driven with the handbrake on!

@PatterSongSA
So, ignoring the odd word change, did you like the singing, acting, movement, staging, effort, diction - or aren't they important?

Why did they change the reference to Strephon's "Crooks and pipes and ribbons so gay?"
PatterSongSA 1 year ago
Strephon is going into parliment? It's not so clear from what they are singing. I'm all confused. I wish they'd explain what is happening.

No need to be confused. The Fairies are making Strephon a Member of Parliament so that he can take away the Peers' privileges.
I doubt that it was written with a US audience in mind...
