Thanks for posting this. I first became aware of Davie Allan and the Arrows due to the movie "Hell Ride" I liked a lot of the soundtrack and when I finally hunted down the song listing I noticed I liked the Davie Allan songs a lot. Unfortunately it's not always that easy to track them down anymore.
I think Hell's Angel leader Sonny Barger was an advisor on biker movies. He may have played in a couple. Jesse Ventura the wrestler was a biker, colors and all in 1970 or early 1970s. I don't think they mentioned that when he was running for governor of MinneSOTA.
It's kind of a shame that movies like Devil's Angels, Wild Angels, etc. do little or nothing to help viewers understand biker culture. Rather than explaining bikers, these movies just exploited them, suggesting that all bike culture means is drinking, partying, and screwing. At least Easy Rider did a bit better maybe?
Yeah, we're credited on the jacket but not on the label. Thanks for your kind comments. I'm the one who did the Garagehangover article. (I also did a Goldmine story on Davie Allan around '92). Jerry Tawney & I got together one night last summer to go see another old friend. I've worked a few times with Phil Anthony in recent years, and I hear from John Rondell from time to time.
Hey, thanks for posting the vocal, but I wish you had credited the artist: Jerry & the Portraits. That's Jerry Tawney on lead vocal with background vocal by Pat Short, Phil Anthony, John Rondell and yours truly, Gary Myers. I also did the vocal arrangement and as I'm sure you can tell, we laid the vocal over the existing track by Davie & the Arrows.
Right. As I'm sure you're aware, the attribution of artists is a problem for all the Mike Curb soundtrack Tower/Sidewalk stuff. To be honest, when I posted this video, I don't think I knew Jerry & The Portraits was a "real" band. There are so many "fake" bands on these soundtracks that it's easy to get mixed up. But you guys deserve credit. The Garagehangover website did a great overview of the Portraits complete with mp3s. I love "Runaround Girl"--there are a few Youtube videos of it.
I just realized - I posted some of that info before, several months ago! Guess I should have looked further back into the comments before I repeated myself. Oh well, what's another senior moment?
@dapoetmaster You want to sell or trade for something outta my collection??? Is there any free movie sights I can see some of these old biker movies???
You'll like these movies, there sitting on a shelf somewhere. If enough of us raised a stink they're re-release them. Tell your friend ...they tell their friens, don't be Born losers get the WORD OUT!!!
I saw this movie at a theatre. I still think that it was the BEST biker movie ever. I know one guy that has the record album. Great to see it here. Thanks. I'd buy the movie if I could find it.
I'd like to check them out. To be honest, though, all of the biker movies I've seen from this era have been AWFUL. Even The Wild Angels, the most popular and successful of the exploito biker movies, is rather crappy. To me that kind of movie is priceless historically and culturally but not too enjoyable to watch.
@DontTouchDat I enjoy them, too.Even the worst of them have hot choppers, cute, scantily clad chicks & more often than not nice retro scenery &/or beautiful countrysides.I had the same wish (large cheap dvd collection),oh yeah- & fun soundtracks !
This made me very very happy, thank you for all the info gem4777.Great stuff, most kids today have no idea,I always have my kids (25 ,14 ,and 13)give this stuff a listen and they love it.
By far this was one of the best biker movies of that era............my fave though is Born Losers which introduced Billy Jack to the scene!

Listen to the Brady Bunch's "Keep on Movin'" side by side against Hell Rider. The similarities are eerie.

The Devil's Rumble in Inglorious Basterds was just plain awesome!!! I think they re-furbished the sound though...

Cool. That the song was in that movie, and that its sound was changed, don't surprise me for Tarantino.

I don't know because I don't have the album, but isn't "Cody's Theme" on there. That's my favorite tune from the movie.
