  • Check mozaiks version andy and Donal with other lads

  • Capo on second fret on donaals andy has capo on Mandola on eight fret

  • amazing and inspiring performance. anyone know what the tuning on the bouzouki is for this?

  • @BigAlToronto Good ol' GDAD

  • This is a signature piece!

  • i agree, goosebumps all over

  • I love the energy that Donal puts into this song. I can't stop watching it.

  • Andy still has an amazing voice. This is so awesome.

  • Female version....see Steeleye Span they sang a version.

  • does anyone know the female version of this song?

  • Two masters in action. Best trad song of all time.

  • Andy is such a pimp, he probably had sex with the reporter during commerical break

  • @TheSpartan188

    HAHAHA :D

  • u are magic

  • Wow! They are both incredibly good musicians. Planxty all over again.

  • Andy's voice still gives me goosebumps.

  • Legends with a capital 'L' ......

  • fuckin wizards

  • What instruments are these? Are they banjos? if so, Irish are the only people who can make banjos sound cool lol :) ♥ by the way in the story of the song is this a woman saying this? Or something else? please explain if possible :)

  • @faerieangeltaitai They are playing the Irish bouzouki!

  • @cdplaya0 It looks like Lunny's has a longer scale. Is there no term differentiation for this, or is Irvine's more in the Cittern family, albeit with 4 courses of strings instead of 5?

  • @earlgrey626 You are spot on I think. Irvine may be playing a tenor mandola here. I'm not a string instrument expert though haha.

  • It's not a tenor mandola. I play one of those, and that thing dwarfs mine. Bouzouki or mandocello gets my guess.

  • @SpanneredSpoons It is a Bouzouki. I think it was Donal that first modified the bouzouki for their purposes. It could be called an Irish Bouzouki, for all I know. I just know it is one, but modified. If you look into the bio for Donal or Planxty, you might find the story.

  • @Fionnuala1969 The first person to play the Bouzouki in the context of Irish folk was Johnny Moinaghan (think that's the spelling) but Planxty really made it popular and refined the technique

  • @faerieangeltaitai Its actually an English folk song. Both Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny are playing the guitar-bouzouki, and yes its told from the perspective of a woman

What a pair of legends :P

  • @Redstar226

I keep waiting for the bodhrán and uilleann pipes to kick in, so close is this to the original, but I'm not disappointed at all when they don't.!.

    Fantastic !.

  • It doesn't get much better than this!

  • I am not Irish BUT..I would be proud to be so...raise the Guiness jars for Planxty!

  • Excellent!!!

    Ruiseart.

  • awesome bilko! just takes me somewhere away from his world.

  • Awesome version!

    Luv it!

    One of my favourites!

  • 2 absolute legends, pure maestros!

  • I love this song but Andy has got to be absolutely sick of it!

  • Have loved this song - among so many others - for so long now - what a feast to see them play -

    thanks, bilko!

  • my favourite song and this is a great version

  • does anyone know if Andy plans to visit the US anytime soon...?

  • I still love the Planxty version, espesially when the pipes and bodran kick in.

Over thirty five years later, It is very disconcerting to realise that the song might actually sound better as a duet!.

I don't think I have ever seen Andy and Donal play as well as this before!.

  • What a great version of this ancient track! I wonder what Erik Visser/Flairck would think of this? Ask Mary Coughlan!

  • Incredible. I actually started to laugh at one point. Thanks very much for uploading this.

  • Man, does that Rock!?!

  • YYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

  • perfect!

  • Priceless as always..............

  • Thanks....I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms.......for the last 40 years....!!!

  • Thanks. These guys are my idols ! This song is very difficult because of the irregularity in verses length...

  • That was great, thanks for sharing! 5*

  • Brilliant!! They just get better and better every time they play together! Thanks a million for posting this!

Why-o- why-oh-why can one only award a maximum of 5 stars??????

  • Was andy with steeleye span?

  • Not to my knowledge. But He was with Johnny Moynighan in Sweeny's Men.

  • Andy was also a member of the irish supergroups, Planxty and Patrick Street. This song & "Plains of Kildare" are two of my all time favorites from Andy. My guess is that they are popular with a lot of other fans too. Thanks for posting.

  • He also was with the late great Bothy Band.

  • jabuendia1, Andy Irivine wasn't in the Bothy band.

  • No, he wasn't. You probably mixed up with Donal Lunny...

  • Good call. You're absolutely right.

  • @yahoochiewatchie

He was not, but he was in Sweeney's Men along with Terry Woods, later a member of Steeleye Span.

  • They are always great!...

  • I see they're now allowed to sing about adultery on RTE, unlike the older B&W video of this song on youtube :D

  • I wish I could be this good when I'll get to this age. Wow.

  • i would like to see andy sing "the rambling boys of pleasure" again...this wuld be great!

  • these guys are better than ever!
