What instruments are these? Are they banjos? if so, Irish are the only people who can make banjos sound cool lol :) ♥ by the way in the story of the song is this a woman saying this? Or something else? please explain if possible :)
@cdplaya0 It looks like Lunny's has a longer scale. Is there no term differentiation for this, or is Irvine's more in the Cittern family, albeit with 4 courses of strings instead of 5?
@SpanneredSpoons It is a Bouzouki. I think it was Donal that first modified the bouzouki for their purposes. It could be called an Irish Bouzouki, for all I know. I just know it is one, but modified. If you look into the bio for Donal or Planxty, you might find the story.
@Fionnuala1969 The first person to play the Bouzouki in the context of Irish folk was Johnny Moinaghan (think that's the spelling) but Planxty really made it popular and refined the technique
@faerieangeltaitai Its actually an English folk song. Both Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny are playing the guitar-bouzouki, and yes its told from the perspective of a woman
Andy was also a member of the irish supergroups, Planxty and Patrick Street. This song & "Plains of Kildare" are two of my all time favorites from Andy. My guess is that they are popular with a lot of other fans too. Thanks for posting.
Check mozaiks version andy and Donal with other lads

@earlgrey626 You are spot on I think. Irvine may be playing a tenor mandola here. I'm not a string instrument expert though haha.
cdplaya0 1 year ago
It's not a tenor mandola. I play one of those, and that thing dwarfs mine. Bouzouki or mandocello gets my guess.

I keep waiting for the bodhrán and uilleann pipes to kick in, so close is this to the original, but I'm not disappointed at all when they don't.!.
Fantastic !.

I still love the Planxty version, espesially when the pipes and bodran kick in.
Over thirty five years later, It is very disconcerting to realise that the song might actually sound better as a duet!.
I don't think I have ever seen Andy and Donal play as well as this before!.

What a great version of this ancient track! I wonder what Erik Visser/Flairck would think of this? Ask Mary Coughlan!
