  • i do have one question? i just wanted to know if the pastel PENCILS you used were chalk pastel (dry) or oils???? i have been hunting for oil pencils for quite some time and thought you might be able to help me find some. x___x i'm trying to actually do an equine portrait, myself, with oil pastel sticks but the detail work is very hard to do with them.

  • @xxshukumei these are tradtional 'dry' pastels, not oil pastels.

  • THIS IS AMAZING!!!

  • what is the name (?) of the pencils?

  • I love, love, love, LOVE this! My goodness, it's just beautiful! I'm sure the owners of this horse just fell in love with this portrait :) I'd like to know if you free-hand the pencil sketch before using the pastels? Did you use a grid method? Some sort of light transfer box or something? The sketch looked really detailed and I become frustrated trying to get a very detailed drawing before using paint or inks. Any advice would be appreciated!

  • @129diggsdrive I use an old fashioned photographic enlarger with the photo printed out onto acetate in the neg carrier. NB this is just a short cut to keep fees down for my clients as I do this full time for a living. I do go out and draw from life regularly and believe strongly that no one should become too reliant on mechanical drawing aids and photography as it can kill all the feeling in the work *steps off soapbox* :)

  • @portraUK I totally agree with you about the aids. Good for cutting down time, but not good for perfecting your skills. Very good job on this.

  • it looks like 3D 0.o

  • Because you are portraUK and your AWESOME!!! =)

  • o.O

  • Wow, thats amazing! What kind of pastels do you use? It is realy beautiful.

  • I spy perfection!! :D

  • beautiful

  • Very nice work! keep it up :)

  • Greetings from USA. This is amazing work! I've never used pastels before and knew nothing about them but after watching this I'm very inspired to try them out. They seem like a very efficient and versatile medium, whereas paint you always end up throwing some of it away. Mixing on the canvas looks like a cinch too. Can you mix with pastels in a similar manner you mix paint, two hues to make another one? Thanks for posting!

  • awesome!

  • how long did this take ?

  • WWooooooooowwwwwwwww

  • He looks like my horse! COOL! You are amazing

  • :O wow this doesnt even look like a painting/drawing!

  • its a photo and u draw on it !! ^^

  • es sieht so aus als könne man es durch den bildschirm streicheln... so real :)

  • einfach nur hamma !!!!!!!!!!!

  • That horse could real pretty real fast and then it kept improving until it looked like a picture of a horse.

Can I ask, what was the part where you wore blue gloves? What's that all about?

  • @imagineaboringlife they are surgical gloves, I wear them to protect my skin and the paper from each other when I gently blend the pastel on the surface.

  • do you work with reference pictures a lot?

  • @4evermoocow I take the photos myself

  • Oh my! That is FANTASTIC! You are an artist!

  • this is beautiful, you're extremely talented!

  • You know, as I watched this video, I glanced down at a drawing that I've been working on and almost cried about how awful mine looked compared to yours, however, then i thought, maybe I should spend more time on the details, work a little harder and improve what I've done so far, so thank you for being an inspiration to me and continue the hard work to make such wonderful pieces of art

  • that is epic!

  • soo unbelievably wonderful *-* i LOVE this horse. really jeallous..^^ it really looks like a photography!! :D

  • i am soooooo jealous! how did u do the shading??????

  • this is truly inspiring! i wish i had the talent to even dream of doing this! :D it is stunning and look soo life like! your eye for detail is amazing and watching this my jaw was nearly on the ground hehe xx

  • WoW!! I am atonished about the quality of your work, so beautiful!!!

  • which sheds of prismacolor you have used..

  • Awesome! How long did you need for this picture?

  • That is amazing...you're a star !

  • Wow simply amazing! I've been drawing horses for a while and all I can do is black and white. I tried color once, and it looked like vidio game graphics >>. You are amazing, keep it up!

  • I watch this a few times. You make it look real to touch by my hand to pet this horse. Not many people can do that.

  • this is inspiring me to do some art work of my own ;) how did u blend the colors together? thanks

  • @1BloodyRoar1 sometimes by gently pushing colour into the tooth of the paper, or else by very lightly working over it with another pastel

  • Wow!!!

  • FANTASTIC!!!

It's like to stretch out your hands and just be able to touch it:)))))

  • wow

  • how long did it take you to paint this?

  • You truly have amazing talent...wow. Do you mind if I ask how old you are?

  • I would have been amazed with just the pencil part in the background... You took it beyond that, way beyond. Phenomenal job. Stunning.

  • might aswell be a photograph its so realistic. amazing job

  • so the end produce def looked like a picture. wow, you are amazing!

  • Simply MAGNIFICENT! I can't tell you just how astonishing this piece is. Most horses don't look that beautiful in real life! If I may ask you as question, the background colors are black and what else? I saw you apply the color black in the beginning and then you added some other color to soften it up. Thanks :0)

  • @shysterlicious sepia and umber

  • @portraUK where do you get your pastels

  • wow your amazing!

where did you learn how to do that?

or have you always just known?

  • @xxcrazyponyloverxx I wasn't much good at art when I was a kid, I just loved to do it so I went to art college and then I practised for another 20 years. I'm still learning!

  • no no no thats impossible theres no way someone can make something so good with pastels nononononononono lol

  • Oh my gosh... That is breath taking, I'm a progressing artist, and I LOVE dramatic shading but I have NEVER done anything that great. That's amazing, great job. :)

  • Nooo way man, that IS a photograph!

I can draw a horses anatomy pretty good, but the light reflections in the coat, that's just torture. Respect to you!!
