Some people's comments are so ignorant. Yes this song mentions "speed", but that's not the focal point by any means. Either way, this is arguably my favorite song by Elliott, it's #1 most played on my iTunes at least. He has so many amazing songs it's very difficult to choose.

i wish i could have been there...also this is one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs (last christmas eve i was listening to this song on repeat, its like impossible to go into detail, but it was a very heavy and unforgettable night, to say the very least. i am at one with him whenever i listen to this song, but that goes for all of his songs. i love you man.

I think the line "high on amphetamines" makes that rather explicit. But he does use drugs as metaphors for other things and denied taking drugs in his early career. You're right though, fantastic song.

sometimes its the only way to hear some of his songs live... it sucks but it is what it is, people only took video's of the big songs like between the bars, needle in the hay, miss misery, 13, angeles. stuff like that.
