His trademark is his vocal style, people say that Heafy tried to copy that, which he didn't, as he didn't sound like him at all. That aside it's merely a technique that everyone can use. However I agree that he has become a great singer now, he's amazing on In Waves!

it is what it is but everyone knows that its hetfields thing, and yes its a trademark characteristic of his vocal. i don't really care if he meant to it or not. To be honest i'd say he just wanted to sing more and he thought it was gonna suit him without thinking too much about it or if he was sounding like anyone. my problem was that it sounded bad. like light to flies sang with a gruff voice!? the screaming was such an integral part to the song/album kinda ruined it. they have it now though.
