Sometimes, if you don't have the Dongle, the program wont work properly.

Very nice description. I have been using Final Cut Pro for the Past 3 years but Avid was one of my first editing tools. They are both great and both have pros and cons. Funny I was looking for some Avid tuts because I am trying to shave the rust off my old Avid Techniques for Media composer edit I will be getting into.

Wrong final cut pro is currently the industry standard. maybe you dont live in Hollywood. oh and all the news stations use final cut. and quite a few movies have been done in final cut

Learn both. You'll be a much more effective editor if you're comfortable and fast in both Final Cut and Avid.

IMHO - Avid is slightly better than Final Cut for overall usage.

Final Cut is NEARLY as good. Final Cut's only advantage is the cheap price upfront, but Avid has far superious media management, color correction, and it has the only script-based editing in the industry. But I agree with bjamieson: learn both. Avid is a world-leader, but Final Cut is popular enough that you'll probably run into it in an editorial job.

dude avid is probably the best editing software ive ever used but then again, i used it in a 500,000 studio at bournmouth. i prefer it than final cut pro but... its not as easy but when you get used to it its really easy :)
