@fork1964 In a mainly agricultural economy the majority of the revenue does not ( did not go to ) go neither to the goverment nor to the part of the north that benefited from it. Also who was doing the majority of the work? In south caroline, for instance, after the import of new slaves was prohibited by congress in 1808, by 1856 the slave ppl was almost the same as the free ppl. The economic gain was huge...........for the South. If the slavery was not the main issue, why they dn't freethem?
@mazmonte77 Many slaves were freed, some became slave owners themselves. If the war where about slavery, why did Ulysses Grant own a slave during the war? Why was New Jersey, a slave state, on the Union side? I had htm's but you tube won't let me use them.
@fork1964 So the underground railroad is an invention of ours as well as the law passed by congress back them that demanded from free states to return " the run away slaves" back to their owners ?There were slaves in many parts of the country, but it is undiniable the fact that, in the south, slaves were the biggest economic investment and asset. over one third of the world's cotton was from the south. You missed my point however, that even during the war, some states where slavery was still legal were fighting for the North. The main Union General, Grant owned a slave during the war and didn't free him until the emancipation proclamation was signed.
@fork1964 couple of things:from 1830 on, the majority of the work in the north was done by new inmigrants from europe( industrial economy), slaves were present but as a domestic comodity and/or fading away as a social growing secment of the north. this created a big difference between the N and the S. @festdir The leader of the Union army, Ulysses S. Grant was a slave owner during the war. Why would he own a slave if he were fighting to free them? Also, I believe you are afraid to make your profile public.
@festdir I don't know where you got your bogus information, but Grant did not free his slave until the 13th amendment went into effect. Northern General Sherman did not free his slaves until Dec. 1865. The war was about money, no one in the North said anything about slavery until the U.K. announced it was going to ally with the C.S.A. Are you aware that Free Black men, Latinos and Native Americans also fought for the south?
@fork1964 Not true. Grant freed that slave in 1859. Sherman never owned any slaves, and the UK had soured on the Confederacy by 1864. And the South never recruited any black units until three weeks before the war ended--and to show their trust, they trained in the Richmond prison yard, and were led by prison wardens and MPs. Talk about bogus information--which SCV "fact sheet" did this malarkey come from?
It's a tricky question, but Grant basically owned slaves because of the laws governing women's property rights awarded control of her slaves to him, although this law was being challenged. His wife nominally owned the slaves, but the rights to use the property were given to the husband under the law at that time usually. Either way, Grant was either a slave-owner or a direct user of slave labor. He favored gradual elimination of slavery and was not an immediate abolitionist.
Those "cowards" inflicted 365,000 Union deaths and took 211,000 prisoners. Not bad for a bunch of farmers with their hunting rifles. The north's battlefield record was atrocious until its superior manpower took over. According to the 1860 census only 17% of American white males aged 18-22 lived in the states that would form the Confederacy. Even Union soldiers of the time admitted they were outfought. Quantity beat quality in the American "Civil War".
Superior martial abilities & superior morality took over.
The US vs GB, Finn vs USSR, Afgans vs USSR, Vietnam vs France, China & the US...all of them had far worse positions. Yet they kept the sovereignty the immoral cowardly traitors never earned.
The only flag the CSA ever flew correctly was the white flag.
@festdir You're an ignorant twat. The only reason the US defeated Great Britain was because France, Spain and the Netherlands all intervened on behalf of the US. All of your examples involve much of the same thing. The US, UK and China all supplied the Afghans with war material while fighters poured in from all over the Muslim world. The Viet Minh received substantial support from both China and the USSR in the first Indochinese war. The Confederacy, created from scratch, was all on its own.
What support did they receive that was anywhere near the technological equivalency of the US?
"supplied the Afghans"
One of the 'supplies'? Donkeys. HOW COULD THEY LOSE?!? DONKEYS FTW!!!!!
"Confederacy was all on its own"
Where was the CSS Alabama made? Which one of the other nations mentioned received a top-of-the-line ship? Too bad the CSA didn't just trade it for Donkeys, amirite?
There is no other historical example of a defender, with so much, lose so completely.
@fork1964 Apart from the textile industry, the North wasn't receiving any agricultural revenue from the South. There has never been any tax on exports of cotton or anything else. The North's agricultural produce was feeding Mississippi and much of Tennessee before the war broke out. After secession and the war came, Northern textile mills were still able to run on cotton purchased from Egypt and India and not surprisingly, food shortages began to plague the South.
*Unless that freedom of speech supports minorities, gay rights, war (when not in power), environmentalism (up to and including environmental terrorism) and tearing apart cities due to nonsensical WTO protests. Bonus points if you burn a U.S. flag
Olbermann is a waste of air. Even worse than O'Reilly. Resupplying troops in a newly soveriegn country that legally secceded, is an act of war. Blabber on you brainwashed fool.
The Florida SCV jumped through all the State required hoops - survey, prototype, deposit ($60,000!), etc, even when many others were exempted. To deny them is a blatant act of discrimination based soley on content. It's a scandal that over 100 different plates are allowed in FL at all. If there's to be Manatees, Gators, Dolphins, etc. plates, you've got to be fair allow the SCV the Confederate heritage plate - let the market decide if it will generate any revenue. You don't have to buy one.
Keith is a jackass. So Confederate Flags license plates are stupid, but Malcolm X day in Oakland, California is just dandy, huh? I wonder what Malcolm X would have thought of a "blue eyed devil" like you Keith. Why don't you go hang out at the Malcolm X day celebrations and tell us how wonderful it is?
Oh...no its the part where we didn't want a strong federal government that usurpted the rights of the states.....the part where we wanted to stay true to the core beliefs of the founding fathers and the constitution.
this guy obviously doesn't know the constitution, which PROTECTS secession, afterall,if he wants to be like that about it,we are all traitors to the U.K.
treasonist? no way! we had the right to protect states rights!
LAWFULL?!? now thats the biggest strech! but then again this is CNN so its backwards world, since then america has gotten SOOOO tyrannical the founding fathers would think they were back in england!
this guys a dumbass if hes not doing this hes calling reagan a lousy prez. This sack of pig slop matersbates to obama but doesnt even know the constituation(cant spell) which said what we did was alright. people who care stop watching this prick and lets start a protest agasint him
Fort Sumpter was located in S. C. a confederate state. So the confederacy didn't invade anyone until after the war began. The union tried to send troops to fort sumpter (state owned and state run) and to keep the union from having a foothold in the south they defended themselves. READ A BOOK NOT WRITTEN BY A PACIFIST LIBERAL!
@olivemike81 You're a fucking dumbass, maybe YOU need to read a book because the South was fired upon by Union soldiers at Fort Sumter which started the war.
....aaaaaaaaand there was a bit or racism involved. Stop trying to pretend they were angels:
"Our government is founded upon the supposition. . . that the white man is not equal to the black man, that slavery is his natural and normal condition. . . Our government is the first in the world to be founded upon this. . . fact" (approximate quote) --Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States of America, 1861. Quoted in BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM by James M. McPherson.
What a stupid man. He knows nothing of his history. Has Florida gotten their CSA plates yet? I know they introduced it. I'm surprised that even Maryland had them before Florida. Anyway, the South didn't make an insurrection, they had every right to secede. I'd prefer an agrarian life to an industrial one any day.
weve had glorious sons of confederate veterans platesin federally occupied South Carolina a long long time and the only ones that complain are the northern imperials and the National Association for the Abuse of Carolina People.
Worst Person In The World: Keith Olbermann - historical ignorance and cultural biggotry
i bet his brainwashers neglected to tell him that slavery was legal in new york till 1855 and new jersey till 1865(the emancipation proclamation[1863] only applied to southern states and western territories).
it was dishonest abe that ignored the constitution and invaded our countrys. he sent the first terrorist to burn our beloved Carolina to the ground and murder civilians to coerce us into returnin to their empire.
GO TO HELL Keith Olbermann!! This is from a letter from Abraham Lincoln to the New York Times August 22, 1862 "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the union, and is not either to save or destroy Slavery, If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would do that." Lincoln invaded the south to collect taxes YOU IDIOT!
What an ignorant slut...the south started this bloody war? That was started by north invading the south for having the audacity to put the words of the Declaration of Independence into practice.
Keith Olbermann is a self-richeous pretty-boy liberal self-centered faggot. Pro-slavery? Robert E. Lee preached of abolition LONG before anyone else has. Pro-slavery? How about the Lousiana Native Guard? The first all-black vlunteer regiment of the Civil War. Treasonous? Like the militiamen of the Revolution were streasonous? Fuck you Keith, and I'd LOVE to meet you face to face you pompous ass..
I have relatives from the South (proud of it) and if I could live in a one tag state I'd have the Confederate flag plate on the front. Ohio needs to drop the front tag just like alot of states did. The you have the stupid states that went back to 2 tags. WTF?
These comments are pretty fascinating. Who knew so many rednecks are not just proud of the south's actions 150 years ago, but are drooling over the thought of a second civil war? Wow.
I typically am with Olbermann but not this time. My ancestors fought for the Confederacy and one died a POW in Elmira and I'll take pride in that for the rest of my life. They fought for what they believed in and against the opressive new laws and ideals coming from the apathetic North.
dude you have got to be kidding. Not knocking your people who died for fighting on the stupid side of ignorance but what are you talking about. But if you hold any kind love for a system of government that kilkled, inslaved, and perpously held down a number of races then you are an idiot.Love your people but if they stood bullsh*t learn to seperate
Sir, May I ask you which part of your Colonial Heritage are you the most proud of?
The Pro Slavery part? The Armed Treasonous Insurrection against a Lawful British Goverment...Or the part that led to a war that killed thousands of our British Brothers?
Sir...I say, Damn your Hypocritical Goverment and Flag!
I'll never say the confederacy did the right thing- but for the time I see their points. ROBERT E LEE was perhaps the most honorable soldier this country has ever had- yet he despised slavery. The country was less than a generation old before the north dictated policy. Today we demand less national government. I see I love NY shirts all the time- what has ever been so great about NYC- the mafia corruption?? or the Rockefellers ripping off America. The old south has an easy way about it.
Keith's right again. Heritage my ass. You know that before Lincoln was elected, when the slave states had the most power in DC, they favored an increase in Federal power? When Lincoln won, they suddenly switched to increasing state power. Heh. The Confederacy was a hypocritical movement that was incredibly racist and intolerably unlawful. No one broke the rules except the power-hungry leaders of the confederacy. Hell, they even took advantage of poor southerners. How can you honor the Confeds?
I'll have a look. If the book's subject is the legality of secession, then I'll have to give the author some acknowledgment, as I myself have questioned whether the 'right to revolution' is the Constitution. (thinking of Amendment 9) If you remember, the 'right to revolution' was used by our founding fathers and many others in secessionist movements. However, the goal of the founders was to establish control, not create a state in which the liberty to rebel was legal.
Why do we need a piece of paper to tell us it's ok to revolt. If we don't like the rules being imposed upon on us, even under the guise of social contract, go ahead and revolt. Never let some other person tell you what you can or can't do. Every man and women has every right to the Earth that every other man and woman does. I can't believe how many people don't understand this.
You sort of answer your own question. We need a piece of paper to tell us its okay to revolt the same reason we need you to tell people its okay to revolt. The constitution is just a contract that the people of America more or less agree to live by. People need to know that revolting is okay within their social contract.
I'm not against the RtR. All I'm saying is there was no legal or moral grounds to the southern succession, which you need for the right to revolution.
not to mention, it's that same piece of paper that many gun lovers are using over and over again to cry and whine about their rights.
so you see, it can go both ways. by the way, that "piece of paper" you're referring to is the U.S. constitution. i'm sure you would prefer an anarchy like somalia for example?
Obviously you missed the higher philosophical point I was trying to make. Social contract is arbitrarily chosen by us; the people of the Earth. That said, it is our decision to rewrite that contract as needed. This is also what the framers of the Constitution intended. Think a little deeper next time before you post.
aha, so now you're trying to use the concept of the social contract to justify southern secession.
the fact is, the south left the united states because they felt their "rights" as states were being abused because the north wanted to impose various anti-slavery laws. so in a sense, the irony of confederate politics was that they revolted because they were being denied the freedom that they were denying to others.
"Think a little deeper next time before you post." goes both ways asshole
I said nothing about the secession of the south. Where did you get that from? However, since you brought it up. Morality aside, the Confederacy didn't do anything wrong in trying to secede. I suppose I'll have to point out to your tiny little mind that I do find slavery abhorrent. And don't call me an asshole you snot nosed little shit.
you find slavery abhorrent but you didn't find anything wrong in the Confederacy trying to split b/c they were being denied rights to have slaves. that my friend is what they call a contradiction. why don't you read from some real history, not "Uncle Jimmy Jack's Glorious History of the Good Ol' Confederacy" before you make stupid comments again please.
btw, you're the one who made this personal so you can go cry to your mommy about me calling you an asshole if it will make you feel better
It's not a contradiction at all. The right of people to govern themselves in their own way because of their own beliefs and wanting to secede from an established form of government is exactly what the revolutionary war was all about. That's real history isn't it? Please stop replying. You have lost this argument three times and really aren't smart enough to argue with me. I'm sorry pal. Also, you insulted me first. I simply asked you to formulate a more well thought out argument.
And besides, in the end legality matters very little. Slavery was legal, was it not? It was even in the constitution! The dilemma of legal or ethical still plagues lawyers today. Just think of torture. Sure, the White House can make it legal, but its as sure as hell not ethical or right. Even if the South had any legality in its cause whatsoever, as you say this book points out, that doesn't make the south "right".
Ok, I'm all for family history - but some things you can research and store in a book - others you dont have to broadcast.
What would you think of Germans with Hilter in their family tree - riding around town with a Swastika - for God's sake - people give me a break. If your people were enslaved - you wouldnt find much to be proud about - would you???????????????????
The north helped traffic slaves, and it was only after taking away slaves was used as a threat to the south that the Emancipation Proclemation was enacted.
It was also done to prevent the confederacy from recieving support from European nations, most of which had technically outlawed slavery (though in fact their economies were supported in large part by slave plantations in the Caribbean and other territories).
Olberman is a dipshit. "An armed treasoist insurrection against the lawful govt. of the US" You guys that keep this peice of shit on the air are rediculous. I guess that dipshit Olbeman didn't know that cession was covered under constitution. Read a book you stupid left liberal propgandist dip shit. Keith Olberman "Worst Person in the World" !
Starry 2000, maybe you can enlighten me on southern pride enthusiast protesting the use of the confederate flag, just send me a link so i can research. In your opinion starry who else should be held to the task as you mention. No assumptions made, but I would like to see proof of the protest that was stated above, I don't think you will find any. It is what it is. After all, this isn't the united confederate states of america.
bluechipper, why do you only hold "southern pride enthusiast"s to that task? Why do you assume that they haven't, and that I've never seen them? Why is it even necessary to begin with? Just curious.
My opinion as to what the true answer is? It's more of the same hatred you imply you don't have, or only have for those groups and that flag.
The confederate flag happens to be a part of the states, and subsequently the nations, history. The plate represents the hostory of the southern states, and is not synonymous with hatred in and of itself.
Furthermore I find the hatred towards southerners here quite ironic and disgusting. I shouldn't be surprised by those comments, as they are the ones who can't wrap their minds around the idea I proposed.
Olbermann is way off the mark on this one, way to defensive and sensitive.
Fuck Iraq, bomb the south and finish off these vermin rednecks!!!Gonna have to because they breed like rats.
Not to worry though; actually doing shit is is a bit of a hamper on their typical doughnut budweiser and ciggarette routines. And god bless them on sunday after they finger bang their daughters.
hey kieth, treason??? i guess George Wasington did as well. I cant Stand Yankees who get into Southern Affairs. If you dont like the confederate flag, go cry about it.
That flag represents history and heritage Broadway14534. Not hatred, not slavery, but a period of time that may mean a lot to anyone.
A lot of people in the south have ancestors that fought in the war, and whether right or wrong, what they accomplished does hold significant meaning. There is nothing wrong with being proud of any or all of those things.
I know that part of it is heritage. I'm from virginia, and my dad's from south carolina. I have ancestors on both sides of the war. But I still think it's rascist to fly a confederate flag. There's nothing wrong with southern pride, but think about it from an african american's perspective.
I understand how a black American could take offense to the confederate flag. However, again, it is also just as much apart of their history as any other citizens. I do not assume that black Americans look at the confederate flag to only see hatred. I think it would be arrogant to do so, and thus it would be wrong to act on any particular assumption of what someone may or may not see.
I disagree. If I was an african american, and I saw someone promoting that flag I would be outraged. I would see it as the rallying point for hundreds of people to deny freedom. I have nothing against confederate soldiers, or freedom of speech, for that matter, but there are other ways to show pride in heritage.
But you're NOT, and anyway I did concede that black people may take offense to it. I already said that. Everyday I see and hear atrocious things that offend me, right out in the public domain.
I don't like it, but I'm not going after them just because it offends me personally.
i agree with the free speech argument, but having it on government-produced license plates? and say what you will about the confederacy's right to secede, when they fired on fort sumter, they became enemies of the United States and therefore the Union had every right remove that threat to its sovereignty.
Fort Sumpter??? You do know that the fort was in SOUTH CAROLINA ....right??? wouldnt that be considered part of the confederacy after SOUTH CAROLINA succeeded? if so then it was occupied by another country, why should they not get their property back???
it was still a Union military base, much like the United States has in a great number of countries today. it doesn't matter where the fucking fort was, it was the property of the federal government, and it was an unprovoked attack against the United States military. and it's spelled fort sumter. look it the fuck up asshole.
and south carolina never succeeded, they seceded from the union. fucking christ bomberman, go to fucking school and learn something for christ's sake.
thats what i meant when i said succeeded. telling me to go to school? just how old are you? you couldnt even discern what i meant by "succeeded." and not sure if your language helps your argument. YES if a state succeedes all the land in the state belongs to the state.
I believe that this flag is a part of southen history, the rebel flag for the south. I would not own one because It can be offenive to many people, but as a free country, freedom of speech is important. There shouldn't be anything done about someone wanting to display this flag. That is that persons right and choice. And that flag did't stand for hate at the time please do research on this flag.
A Floridian? Florida? Civil War? Isn't this where Lincoln wanted to send the blacks after they were freed? How many Floridians fought in the Civil War? There were probably more men from 14th St in Manhattan.
You make a good point, although i would have liked it if they kept the separate but equal water fountain policy, because with the new races pouring into the country, there'd be a short line at the "mixed asian european" one.
only on planet dummkopf (w/president olbermann) can _lawful_ secession be deemed "treasonous insurrection". what an idiot and anti-liberty slob. his disgusting fallacy game can be played far more easily and voluminously with the fedgoon flag. the notable problem here is the existence of coercive "license plates", not what the hell some jackass wants to put on or around them.
olbermann is a liberal nazi

festdir 2 months ago
@festdir You're an ignorant twat. The only reason the US defeated Great Britain was because France, Spain and the Netherlands all intervened on behalf of the US. All of your examples involve much of the same thing. The US, UK and China all supplied the Afghans with war material while fighters poured in from all over the Muslim world. The Viet Minh received substantial support from both China and the USSR in the first Indochinese war. The Confederacy, created from scratch, was all on its own.
Torbon8372 2 months ago
@Torbon8372 "Vietnam"

LJARSONBECK 3 years ago
Keith's right again. Heritage my ass. You know that before Lincoln was elected, when the slave states had the most power in DC, they favored an increase in Federal power? When Lincoln won, they suddenly switched to increasing state power. Heh. The Confederacy was a hypocritical movement that was incredibly racist and intolerably unlawful. No one broke the rules except the power-hungry leaders of the confederacy. Hell, they even took advantage of poor southerners. How can you honor the Confeds?

Read the book "The south was right"
Its a great legal argument about the secession movement. Its always good to get another point of view and remain openminded
hughess3 3 years ago
I'll have a look. If the book's subject is the legality of secession, then I'll have to give the author some acknowledgment, as I myself have questioned whether the 'right to revolution' is the Constitution. (thinking of Amendment 9) If you remember, the 'right to revolution' was used by our founding fathers and many others in secessionist movements. However, the goal of the founders was to establish control, not create a state in which the liberty to rebel was legal.
Imperiused 3 years ago
Why do we need a piece of paper to tell us it's ok to revolt. If we don't like the rules being imposed upon on us, even under the guise of social contract, go ahead and revolt. Never let some other person tell you what you can or can't do. Every man and women has every right to the Earth that every other man and woman does. I can't believe how many people don't understand this.
solgoode1 3 years ago
You sort of answer your own question. We need a piece of paper to tell us its okay to revolt the same reason we need you to tell people its okay to revolt. The constitution is just a contract that the people of America more or less agree to live by. People need to know that revolting is okay within their social contract.
I'm not against the RtR. All I'm saying is there was no legal or moral grounds to the southern succession, which you need for the right to revolution.
Imperiused 3 years ago
not to mention, it's that same piece of paper that many gun lovers are using over and over again to cry and whine about their rights.
so you see, it can go both ways. by the way, that "piece of paper" you're referring to is the U.S. constitution. i'm sure you would prefer an anarchy like somalia for example?
fluffynoses 3 years ago
Obviously you missed the higher philosophical point I was trying to make. Social contract is arbitrarily chosen by us; the people of the Earth. That said, it is our decision to rewrite that contract as needed. This is also what the framers of the Constitution intended. Think a little deeper next time before you post.
solgoode1 3 years ago
aha, so now you're trying to use the concept of the social contract to justify southern secession.
the fact is, the south left the united states because they felt their "rights" as states were being abused because the north wanted to impose various anti-slavery laws. so in a sense, the irony of confederate politics was that they revolted because they were being denied the freedom that they were denying to others.
"Think a little deeper next time before you post." goes both ways asshole
fluffynoses 3 years ago
I said nothing about the secession of the south. Where did you get that from? However, since you brought it up. Morality aside, the Confederacy didn't do anything wrong in trying to secede. I suppose I'll have to point out to your tiny little mind that I do find slavery abhorrent. And don't call me an asshole you snot nosed little shit.
solgoode1 3 years ago
you find slavery abhorrent but you didn't find anything wrong in the Confederacy trying to split b/c they were being denied rights to have slaves. that my friend is what they call a contradiction. why don't you read from some real history, not "Uncle Jimmy Jack's Glorious History of the Good Ol' Confederacy" before you make stupid comments again please.
btw, you're the one who made this personal so you can go cry to your mommy about me calling you an asshole if it will make you feel better
fluffynoses 3 years ago
It's not a contradiction at all. The right of people to govern themselves in their own way because of their own beliefs and wanting to secede from an established form of government is exactly what the revolutionary war was all about. That's real history isn't it? Please stop replying. You have lost this argument three times and really aren't smart enough to argue with me. I'm sorry pal. Also, you insulted me first. I simply asked you to formulate a more well thought out argument.
solgoode1 3 years ago
And besides, in the end legality matters very little. Slavery was legal, was it not? It was even in the constitution! The dilemma of legal or ethical still plagues lawyers today. Just think of torture. Sure, the White House can make it legal, but its as sure as hell not ethical or right. Even if the South had any legality in its cause whatsoever, as you say this book points out, that doesn't make the south "right".

Starry2000 3 years ago
The confederate flag happens to be a part of the states, and subsequently the nations, history. The plate represents the hostory of the southern states, and is not synonymous with hatred in and of itself.
Furthermore I find the hatred towards southerners here quite ironic and disgusting. I shouldn't be surprised by those comments, as they are the ones who can't wrap their minds around the idea I proposed.

That flag stands for slavery. You'll say, "No, it stands for states rights." But what other issue than slavery was there over state's rights?
Broadway14534 3 years ago
That flag represents history and heritage Broadway14534. Not hatred, not slavery, but a period of time that may mean a lot to anyone.
A lot of people in the south have ancestors that fought in the war, and whether right or wrong, what they accomplished does hold significant meaning. There is nothing wrong with being proud of any or all of those things.
Starry2000 3 years ago 2
I know that part of it is heritage. I'm from virginia, and my dad's from south carolina. I have ancestors on both sides of the war. But I still think it's rascist to fly a confederate flag. There's nothing wrong with southern pride, but think about it from an african american's perspective.
Broadway14534 3 years ago
I understand how a black American could take offense to the confederate flag. However, again, it is also just as much apart of their history as any other citizens. I do not assume that black Americans look at the confederate flag to only see hatred. I think it would be arrogant to do so, and thus it would be wrong to act on any particular assumption of what someone may or may not see.
Starry2000 3 years ago
I disagree. If I was an african american, and I saw someone promoting that flag I would be outraged. I would see it as the rallying point for hundreds of people to deny freedom. I have nothing against confederate soldiers, or freedom of speech, for that matter, but there are other ways to show pride in heritage.
Broadway14534 3 years ago
"If I was an african american"
But you're NOT, and anyway I did concede that black people may take offense to it. I already said that. Everyday I see and hear atrocious things that offend me, right out in the public domain.
I don't like it, but I'm not going after them just because it offends me personally.
Starry2000 3 years ago
i agree with the free speech argument, but having it on government-produced license plates? and say what you will about the confederacy's right to secede, when they fired on fort sumter, they became enemies of the United States and therefore the Union had every right remove that threat to its sovereignty.
velocichrist 3 years ago
Fort Sumpter??? You do know that the fort was in SOUTH CAROLINA ....right??? wouldnt that be considered part of the confederacy after SOUTH CAROLINA succeeded? if so then it was occupied by another country, why should they not get their property back???
BOMBERMAN1231029 3 years ago
it was still a Union military base, much like the United States has in a great number of countries today. it doesn't matter where the fucking fort was, it was the property of the federal government, and it was an unprovoked attack against the United States military. and it's spelled fort sumter. look it the fuck up asshole.
