Not exactly - "When I see your grace / I can see all God's words come true". So, right from the beginning of this song, he is speaking of "you" and "God" separately, though of course God does figure greatly into the person he wrote this for - his wife (he said so in an interview). Shortly after he converted, the UK tabloids included "veiled bride for Cat Stevens" in their inflammatory articles about him, so that's where the "whatever they say" comes from.

Above, the official video of Yusuf singing this song in a coffee house, someone opens a book to a chapter titled "The Light of Thy Countenance" which is a passage ttaken from Job in the Old Testament. God is the light of Jobs's Countenance every single day of all his trials and tribulations.

I think he's expressing his love for God/Allah as the Creator is the Light of all Countenance. Seeing God and holding God's hand is a metaphor. Yusuf writes in metaphors.
