    14th Indiana

  • we stilled marched until the field caught on fire then me and friends said fuck this and we left...

  • @kglenn86

There were more american casualtys in the civil war because both sides were american.

  • @kglenn86 I have to laugh at you folks who make a big differentiation between the various names given to the Civil War. Apart from every other name you might like and that might fit the description nearly as well, beyond all else it was indeed a Civil War. it was because South Carolina fired the first shot. Northern aggression? No doubt. States Rights as a buzzword? No doubt either. Bottom line, the war was about slavery as long as those states rights WERE the right to own slaves.

  • @rickcee Actually no, the war was not about slavery, it was about taxes, tariffs, and state's rights. At the start of the Civil War, the Confederacy already had laws written up to end slavery in the South. Slavery became the humanitarian excuse for the North to continue the war... just about the same way "spreading democracy" or "stopping the use of WMD's" was America's excuse to invade Iraq. Does anyone really think millions of White men risked their lives to either keep or free slaves? No.

  • @justaguyX74NJ No, no....you miss my point. I never said the war was actually about slavery. I'm painting slavery as a bottom line issue, and it is and always will be. It doesn't matter that no one went into the war with slavery on their minds as a mission. I think we all know that pretty well by now. The issue is that as long as slavery existed or exists for that matter, since it does still exist in the world today, then it will always be a bottom line issue. You can't OWN a person.

  • @rickcee I agree. I don't understand how people say that slavery was only a side issue. I'm no historian but I've read books and seen many documentaries about the war and everything seems to confirm that without the issue of slavery, the south would not have seceded. The south seceded as a preemptive measure to get out before the north's abolitionist gov't spread it's influence southward. The Union army's refusal to leave Fort Sumter was seen as an invasion of sorts, prompting war.

  • @kglenn86 200k dead in WW2? I think you mean 60,000,000+ dead

  • @kglenn86 indeed my friend i'm from western pa and i can truly say i would side with the south

  • GETTYSBURG… OTHER TIMES – new book.

It is a great read about the famous battle and very different. You can get your copy from my YouTube site (GETTYSBURGbook) or search Amazon or eBay.

    Cheers. To all.

  • LONG LIVE LINCOLN!

  • These reenactments must be spectacular to see. All the noise, smoke, confusion....

  • Like no one wanted to die at the beginning. Haha. But I remember when I reenacted, only once. It was a small made up thing, but so, so much fun.

  • Civil War reenactors are so overrated!!!!

  • @fran112185 No Civil War reenactment comes close to the battle scenes in the movie Gettysburg, simply because during reenactments bodies don't explode into a pink spray and go flying from cannon shot and canister shot. The special effects of Hollywood (even though the battle scenes could have been better) make it far more exciting and gory than a bunch of dopey guys doing the equivalent of a football game tailgate party can do. A visit to Gettysburg is emotionally stirring, but not reenactment.

  • @rickcee Still, however, many Movies are very crappy when showing historical Battles.

  • @LutzDerLurch Oh, I'd say most of them.

  • @rickcee Dude I'm a WW2 reenactor and I been to Gettysburg and your right it's emotionaly stirring considering I had family who was at the battle of Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge and I also been to Civil War reenactments and I been to WW2 reenactments and I just happen to think WW2 renactments are far more exciting then Civil War the reason I said Civil War was overrated is because it's to common.

  • @fran112185 Well, I guess I just don't get anything out of military reenactment. For me, it's all about 'the place' not the act of battle. We all KNOW about the battles. To stand on those fields and imagine what happened over 140 years ago, though, is very stirring. Seeing a bunch of beer-bellied modern day men who take reenactment seriously and hold those reenactments in fields 'nearby' the actual battlefields just does nothing for me. I prefer to simply stand on the hallowed ground.

  • A large infantry formation going against a well fortified, well defended position means a horrible slaughter for the attackers.

  • I wonder how often people forget to take out their ram rod with those muzzle loaders.

  • @huntman1412 More often than you think, during the civil war it wasnt odd to find dead bodys with ramrods shot threw them. However most of the reenacting groups have rules against using ramrods during events.

  • Reenactments are fun because when it is all over you get up, dust yourself off and go talk about it.

I would never consider actual battle fun. Especially with Napoleonic tactics against modern technology for the time. It was slaughter.

  • Didn't Lee dig trenches at Richmond?

  • Lol..Imagine that with M16's and Ak47s with some M203's and some Abrahms. That would be SLAUGHTER. Wow. Thank god we don't fight like that anymore...

  • "Thank god we don't fight like that anymore... " wtf are you saying??? Is it better now? I mean in battles in the civil war about 10000 men got killed or so, in a WW2 battle 200 000 or more....

In wich way that is better you think???

  • I'm sayin thank god men like me fight the good fight and anti-war faggots sch as yourself should STFU and get out of our lives.

  • omg i rest my case.....

  • you are so right...what am i thinking, you are so smart....

  • Lol. No offense, but seriously GET OFF MAH NUTS

  • that seriously looks like fun

  • potito...

  • So I heard you lived to see the end of the war though. Have you met Abraham Lincoln? =P

  • i did a research paper on the battle of gettysburg a couple years ago wen i was in 8th grade. i luv the civil war erra! it kinda sucked for the only woman/citizen gettin shot in her kitchen while takin care of her sister and baby tho :(

  • XD lol

  • this isnt very accurate. and this is the civil war, so they would of had lines but it would of been more rushed and a lot less orginized.. much smaller lines

  • What are you smoking?

The major battles would have looked very much like this. You have seen to many small events if you think that way. That describes more modern wars.

The Civil war still utilized Napoleonc strategies being large lines shooting at each ofther with massed fire.

  • its hard to believe that wars were once fought like that you think people would have the seance to get down or hide from the bullets.

  • Actually liothelion4, soldiers in the Civil War, and even in 18th century warfare were trained to take cover behind whatever they had in front of their line formations, and of course, the soldiers fortified their defensive positions. By the Civil War, offensive warfare was growing obsolete, and by the war's end, both armies were fighting straight out trench warfare.

  • not realy the south fortified with trenches in Gerogiafrom kenesaw through Marrieta to Atlanta

  • love to kno how many of you guys are actual reenactors.

  • Yerrr that'd be pretty hektik ayesss

  • King George? wtf:O that was the war for Independance you fucktard

  • LOL, funny cunt xD

  • Really? I had no idea. Of course I know you newb. I just like getting hate mail from Americans coz it's funny =)

  • GOD SAVE KING GEORGE! That should get me some good hate mail =)

  • How many people did they get out for that event? It doesn't look as big as the original but still impressive

  • Im with SCV (Sons Of Confederate Veterans) My Great Great Grandfather Noah L Frady fought at Gettysburg and survived big hero.

  • ah, im a reenactor as well, and go on vacation to gettysburg every year at least once. im a drummer so im not as involved as the soldiers, but its still soooo fun

  • how much do you get paid? Cuz i want to be a reenactor lol

  • many times you don't get paid. sometimes you have to pay to participate. It is a thing in which it is a hobby, yet more than a hobby. It is for the experience of reliving history.

  • Well, not only that but up north theirs not too many confederate re-enactors. Even worse, some people give them issues because of it :/

    (I'm from the 12th US)

  • I'm thinking of joining the 9th Texas ifantry reenactors

  • You should, especially if your up north

We could really use some more of you boys :)

  • when you join how do you get the equipment or do you rent it and also what do they put in the muskets to make it just shoot smoke, do they put in gunpowder only

  • >how do you get the equipment

From various suttlers at the events

    >do you rent it

    nope, you buy it

    >do they put in gunpowder only

yep, Just but it in, no ramrod allowed

  • why do the guns cost so much, are they live firing weapons, can it shoot bullets if given the right cartridge

  • To bad about adding the graininess. Since we all know it was a reenactment anyway you might as well have uploaded a good quality image so we could enjoy it. I was at this reenactment and would have enjoyed reliving it a little.

  • Actually that is how it was on all battlefields. The Confederate were usually outnumbered 2-1 and some cases 3-1 and very rarely 4-1 or 5-1.

  • do you know if this is the same battlefield that the 145th reenactment will be taking place on?

  • Yeah, and the best part is, I can spell it right now since I've had to on every test/quiz to gain points for the south and my regiment. It's funny how we're changing history. The south is up by 70 something points! Oh yeah, that free ice cream sundaes prize is ours =D

  • No, I'm not from Tennesse, but my family did originate from there (Which is funny since we did get Tennessee. Even though I wanted Georgia) No, I'm farther north than Tennessee =D

  • Nop, but I want to be! =D But seriously, I am a history nerd (My friends come to me for homework on social studies all the time) It's so cool. My team this year is doing an academic civil war though! I'm second in command Tennessee regiment! Whoot Rebels! =D

  • WHich tennesee regiment?

  • Well, the officers got to choose which regiment they wanted. I wanted to go with Forrest's Calvary. We ended up as the 35th infantry (The Tennesse Mountain Rifle Regiment)By the way, the South ended up winning with around 700 points, while the North had around 600. We got sundaes for winning!

  • Cool, I'll tell my dad to look those up for us! Gosh, I'm such a History nerd! =D

  • Yeah, calvary's my favorite too! I can't wait! My dad says we are going to go and see some reeanactment of a Civil War battle this year =D

  • Wait, did you see it and get heat stroke, or where you in it and got heat stroke?

  • i'll be there in 08! Very excited about it, i haven't been up to Gettysburg in about 10 years. Coming up from Atlanta. Go Rebs!

  • The 3rd PA Artillery, Battery B will come to save the Union in 08!

  • In Pennsylvania WHen?

  • I attended this particular event, actually can see my regiment coming across. However, that year they moved it from July to August or September (I forget) only had 10,000 or so show up compared to the 30,000+ registered in July. It was due to the severe drought they had.

  • The 4th Virginia will be making an appearance :)

    in 08

  • I've been to the past several gettysburgs and find them all very lacking. It's become too commercialized. I think G-burg needs a new backer and place. The time I actually liked the event in the past few years was when it was postponed almost a whole month due to heay rain in July. There was only like 200 or so reenactors there and I actually galvanized with the Confederates for Longstreet's Assult. That was awesome and fun... I just wish more of my unit would come out when they said they would.

  • the 9th mass is going to Gettysburg in 2008 i

  • so am i maybe i'll see you there im with the 17th mississippi

  • you can't count in the 1st Arkansas Battalion!!!

  • is this pickett's charge?

  • Yeah, I think so.

  • I love the Civil War, and am very happy that they are doing reenactments. But, at 1:00, they are standing, and stay standing to fire. They are on a small knoll, so I can see why they have to be there, albeit being open ground. But where the enemy is standing, they could be crouching, even laying prone, and still have a clear shot, drastically reducing the chance of being shot themselves. I honestly don't believe that a Civil War soldier would have done what they did.

  • As a reenactor I understand why. The troops needed to follow orders at any giving time (to double pace or fix bayonets) which required getting up for the most part...... also to charge, and also that was how they were trained. In addition Napoleonic tactics were still being used despite the advanced weapons.

  • They followed the orders/drill. Warfare in that era was liner formation, shoulder to should 2 ranks deep. Thirteen inches between front and rear rank. That is the way it was.

  • i dont like to say this but this reenactment is pretty bad, its pretty unrealistic, besides the fact of so little people, b/c i doubt that they would actually shoot so calmly like that or not even march forward, (i was referrin to the Union troops) I mean Ulysses S. Grant was in that battle and he was always on the offensive, i say this reenactment wasn't pretty good, and u can say my comment is bad all you want, but this is unrealistic

  • You really dont know you're history. Grant was in the western theater when this battle took place

  • Oh, it's always Grant who gets the credit! Grant did this, Grant did that, Grant, Grant, Grant, Grant, Grant! He was a good guy, but there were other generals in the Civil War. I mean, Grant wasn't even at Gettysburg. It was the great General Meade who commanded there. Now, who was it who commanded the turning point of the war? That's right, Meade.

  • No, that's exactly how it was done.

The Civil War was fought using outdated Napoleon tactics, but the weapons used had advanced beyond that, which is why there were so many casualties in the war.

  • US Grant was in Vicksburg, MS on 7-4-63. He was nowheres near Gettysburg, PA. Where did you get your facts from?

But you are right, this reenactment SUCKED !

  • that be somthin of someone actually got killed in a re-enactment

  • My reenacting unit was in a big fight years before I joined down in Virginia. Three or four people died of heat stroke, and a lot more were taken to the hospital.

  • 135 was pretty awesome, unfortunately i missed this one due to Army committment. Can't wait till 145

  • what unit u with im gonna do either the western maryland gettysburg or the normal one

  • Real US Army 102 Cav unit

  • I was there too! Small world. I plan on being at the 150th anniversary battle. Thanks for sharing that with us. I took some video too but I am still trying to figure out how to download it from VHS.

  • I shot this with my new(then)Canon G3 Digital, I never thought at the time it would be such a popular subject. Copy your VHS to DVD and then convert it on your pc with a good ripping software. I just bought Xilisoft for about $5 on E-Bay, it converts movie and audio files to just about any media format.

  • Cool thing! I have the Anteitem Reenactment too. I will see about getting that software. It was a cool video I shot. The cannons came right in front of me and fired. I was so close I could of reached out and touched them.

  • Sounds great! Let me know when you post, I'd love to see it.

  • were you at the origional battle? The films so grainy it seems like it

  • Yeah, I'm going to be 170 years old on my next Birthday...LOL!!

  • lol, nice to meet some1 with a sense of hummer

  • I was down there in 2003 when they held the 140th anniversary event. It was hot and humid and I enjoyed my time for 3 days.

  • I think the weather during the re-enactment mirrored that during the actual battle in 1863. Probably not surprising given time of year, but it did add some extra realism to the event.

  • Yeah I know. I was sweating bullets in my wool uniform. The fire and smoke from the pyrotechnic charges kind of gave us Yanks a cover for a bit. Good thing the FD came and put it out. Everything was going great. I'm glad I was part of it. I was positioned to the extreme right. So I'm in there some where amoung the lines of blue troops.

  • There were a little over 10,000 reenactors for that event, since it was pushed back to August because of the rain that year. Still doesn't compare to the 40,000+ in 1998. Just wait till the 150th anniversaries!

  • You know, speaking of reenactments, I just had my first ever reenactment today! I'm with the 3rd PA Artillery Battery B. Today, I served as a powder monkey. The fighting was fierce! Rebel infantry and artillery all around us! The only defense the battery had was a 3" rifled cannon. Something fired about every second. The man guarding the limber that I was stationed at got shot a couple times, and he was a gonner!

  • wow thats great, can't wait to go to the 150th anniversary in 2013 ;) check this out if your into the muisic hehe ;)

    live365 com/ stations/ chaloner11

  • Amazing! I think I'll be going to the reenactment there this year. Soon enough, I'll be in it! Good job!

  • I wish I wa s tha

  • What part of the battle are the reenacting?

    Looks Very nice btw!

  • Thanks for the comment, it's no masterpiece but I figured someone might like to see it. These scenes may have been from Picketts Charge, can't quite rememmer.

  • im guessin by the left wheel they did(rebs in front left) it was picketts

  • yup u r right
