I always laugh when I see these guys. They are charged with blood-sound and cultural depth. The audience hears it as a form of entertainment, but it's a call to the wild and a hymn to his soul.
Chepito Areas is a Legend of the percussion.he is a Maestro. some of the people that coment here are yes jelous of him. Santana was not the same group without CHEPITO.And he was not from the Caribean he is from LEON NICARAGUA!!!!
Chepito did not take lessons from Tito. Chepito's performance on Timbales was good. You talking about Great , Tito, Oresto, Louis Castro, Mongo, Armando, Other then these look for the players from Cuba and Puerto Rico,
This are two of my best friends and mentors, Had the pleasure to perform and play with both of them on different ocassions, I brought Chepito to Hawaii to perform with my band for one of my events "Hawaii International Latin Music Festival" Armando used to come and sit in with my band "Rolando Sanchez" at the "REUNION CLUB" on Union st in San Francisco many times before I relocated to Hawaii, I love them both derly
Armando Peraza is the conguero that I will always try to emulate. He is a prime example of how the best percussionists are dancers--which he was. Even though he was kinda old here, he oozes with energy. No wonder Carlos latched onto him as his musical godfather! A Supreme Master Musician.

Chepito made his bones in Costa Rica and San Pancho but nevermind after his Santana stint nobody remembers him. Chepito could have been a super timbalero but his arrogance and ignorance made him what he is now:.. a vague memory in ths 70s.
Chepito missed it? He made a tremendous contribution to Santana's development of more advanced Afro-Latino rhythms which musically enriched millions. Hardly a week goes by without me being lifted skywards by one or more of Chepito's marvellous solos or the many fills in the many live & studio recordings available. His Santana stint was GIGANTIC. He was amazingly ON TARGET in my opinion, especially considering how little recognition Latin percussionists usually get.
@Wadidiz --Agreed. All we need to do is to listen to Chepe on the Caravansarai album to hear some truly trancendental timbale. The Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation for example.
Man how can you say that? Chepito still is a great player and a legend...I had the chance to meet him in Nicaragua and to play with him and he's not only a great percussionist (he played the drums with us) but a great guy too! He's very sick, he had a brain stroke many years ago and after that he couldn't perform again the way he used too. Chepito Areas is a legend, he paved the way for many latin players today so please be more respectful.
@frostizado There is no doubt he is great Timbalero. I am curious though. Did he get lessons from Tito Puente? He plays the same type of style like Tito. Very unusual for a South American musican to play a Latin instrument like the timbales, cowbells and congas like the Latin musicans from the caribbean such as Puerto Rico, and Cuba. No disrespect intended. Tito Puente, also, wrote the song Oye Como Va. in the first Santana album. Which is why I am asking you.
@ddja57 Nicaragua is not in South America. It's in Central America. There are wonderful musicians in my country. Nicaragua is sorrounded by The Pacific Ocean in the West and by the Caribbean Sea in the East.
What are those conga stand can anyone tell me???

Does it look like Chepito uses standard drumsticks (rounded tips) as opposed to actual timbale sticks?
