I'm in the counterpart band to Roxbury, the Hillsborough HS Wind Ensemble, and we played this one at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival 2009. As I know, Roxbury was at the 2008 one. Cool piece.
we're playing this piece for marching band this year! It's a medley, which has this, Moonlight Sonata, Fly me to the moon, moon dance, and Claire delune. It's awesome.
Ticheli takes his pieces at various tempos when he conducts them himself. I'm in The Concordia College Band and he conducted us in this piece this spring at the Inaugural Wind Band Institute on Concordia's campus in Moorhead, MN, and during rehearsal, he changed several of his own tempo, dynamic, and articulation markings for our performance. We ended up playing this piece faster under his baton, but it's amazing at any tempo. Well done!
Well, all of you who say it is too slow....I am in the Texas State Wind Ensemble and we played it the exact same tempo under the direction of FRANK TICHELI himself. There are parts that do slow down on this recording but it is still well played.
This was truly a GREAT recording of this piece. I played this piece two years ago with the Kansas State University Wind Ensemble and the piece is NO JOKE! Fun as heck though! Being a horn player, this was one of the best horn parts I've played in awhile! With the high "C" at the end... GOOD STUFF! I look forward to playing this piece again!
OMG the slower parts are way too slow...no motion at all.
Pretty good overall though. Yay band camp. Msg me if you're interested in hearing a recording of this played by the 2005 All-State Symphonic Band and/or the 2006 UH Cougar Band Camp Wind Ensemble, of which I was a part. :)

It is not a song! Use the word "work" or "piece" or "movement"!

We didn't go quite that slow during the slower section though, we dropped it down but it was still a flowing moderato.
