CURTIS INDEED WAS GAY, WE WERE ON THE SAME SOCIAL CIRCLE HERE IN NYC BUT WHO CARES HE WAS ONE HELLUVA SINGER AND ENTERTAINER. RIP CURTIS WE MISS YOU !
Curtis had an awesome voice! I sang with him back in the day. We almost started a group together consisting of me, Leroy Burgess, Russell Patterson and of course Curtis himself. I miss him very much. RIP Curtis.
Curtis was'nt gay, but who cares. This song is jammin'! I wonder why this song was'nt big in the US. Europeans have a different taste in R&B music than Americans.
@Globalfaction I was just thinking the same thing. He would never get a record deal today. He was a phenominal singer but nowadays they go for looks more than vocals.
Shot around Battersea in London & along the Embankment over Albert Bridge....Loved this tune from back in the great days of Funk & Soul,Rare Grooves....& when we could all groove together on the dancefloor.....superb posting.....
I had this on vinyl and have long long long looked for it on CD - brings back memories and good times, back in the days when talent mattered. Thanks for posting...I really really appreciate it.
his is excellent. I LOVE it. Brings back such great memories, thank you. But how can I buy this? It's not available on Amazon OR i tunes!!! Please help x
I so love this and shot here in London England, the voice is amazing nothing like any voice I have heard I really danced to this back then when clubs were places for dancing and going their for the Soul Funk and Disco unlike today their is nothing like the 80s culture.
Just heard this song on the radio a week ago. This was another unsung artist. He was so young when he died. Only 34 years old. He died from complications of diabetes and kidney failure. This man could sing!!!!!
This man was tight..if you can...look up his album from 1986..self-titled...I still have my album AND CD after all that time...this man could sang...may he rest in peace.
i never suspected, until i went to see CH at a lower manhattan nite club where. L. Levan was spinning and saw a sea of black men with baseball caps (1985) that Curtis was "very gay." One of the very finest "soul' singers bar none.
@bigblackbadbrother Hey i like to read comments, it's almost like reading liner notes from the back of albums, but on another level. it's nice to know facts or what people think as long as it's not downright disrespectful or an all out lie. Good look on posting this video. I didn't ever know that he had any videos. I can't wait to see some of his other live performances, especially singing Genie as a member of the BB&Q band.
Thankyou for posting this,I absolutely love this song - I had it on a compilation CD a few years ago but lost it....it's great to hear it again, classic.
I Knew There Had To Be A Video Of This Amazing Talent. One Of My All-Time Favorite Singers. His BB&Q Band And Solo Tracks Can Jamm To Any All Night Party Bash. RIP
he probably would have had a long and great career had he lived long enough. i knew him through a group of gay friends in the very early 80s in winston-salem n.c. he won a talent contest singing the greatest love of all.he was sweet and kind. a little wild needless to say. he went to new york and got a recording contract. he died many years ago i was told by people who grew up off cloverdale ave with him.
I use to chill with Curtis at the Nickle Bar in nyc, he was mad cool, then he started to record for my friends Lola and Bob Blank, who owned the studio Blank Tapes , which was pumpin out all the disco jams! we became good friends. wow RIP Curtis!
My family and I attended the same church (First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC) as he did in the late 70's, even though I honestly was a little young to remember him then. My mom remembered him singing in the choir, and said that he had a wonderful voice.
I never knew that there was a video to this song, which is my favorite of his. But he is still very much missed here. R.I.P.
ok he was big and fine but must one insult it especially therefore that he is not any more there to re-lay you or to prove you the opposite small anecdote songs i want your lovin and i want you all tonight were destinees has his girlfriend
in all poor languages curtis had a short definitely lined up life and a girlfriend has make it slobber, more, one; already in 25 old years as in the video, its illness l ' had employed well and he had to not too much s exhaust the diabete is a complex illness
I understand your curiousity ... you're certainly not the first to ask the question.
For me whether gay or straight we should label the artist by their music.
A disease such as Aids is in the public domain and its your guess as well as mine as to whom has it and from whom they got it from.Nevertheless, organ failure has very similar hallmarks to complications that accompany the onset of HIV.You cannot stop the rumours...R&B is rife with 'gay artists'!Dont let this empty your CD collection!!
He may have had AIDS by sharing needles (if he did drugs...but I'm not sure).
I know this is off subject of Curtis but, Wayne Cooper, falsetto member from Cameo (1976-1980) died of AIDS, but it was suggested that he was gay, until someone mentioned that it could have been caused from the un-sterilized needles (rumors of Heroin addiction).
@OneMixDJ amen. I'm sick of everyone saying he died from drugs, AIDS, or cancer. Even if it was those things, does it really matter. He was diabetic from birth.
You know if he had other videos ("I Want You (All Tonight)" and "Chillin")?! Hes a North Carolina native, whose was only famous in Europe. How did he die?
he suffered diabetes and subsequently died of kidney failure.....
There is some live video footage of Curtis Hairston performing. The performances were mind blowing. He was very connected to his soul and found it easy to translates this into his music. it is hope that these rare tape will be available in the not too distant future...just awaiting some confirmation . I'm working on getting some coverage of the eighties group First Circle "working up a sweat" my cousin played bass guitar..
WTF!? I didn't know this dude had any videos! This is mega rare!! Augustus1850, thanks 4 finding this classic and thanks 4 ur comments on the Eddie Townes video!

Hey man, I played guitar for Curtis in the late 80's.This is so great! I spoke with Earl Monroe and he said he is releasing some new BB and Q. I can't wait. God bless his memory! Patrick
highest repect to you my friend....nothing picks me up more than this song...bb and q are legends..as were atlantic star, melba moore, kashiff ,luther r.i.p..and all the other great artists from the late 70's and 80's..
We can go back anytime we turn on our cd players! Curtis was a southern gentleman and as nice as a saint. I turned Curtis on to Jonathan Butler in 88 and we added some of his tunes to his show. All the best mate.
Cheers, Patrick
I was an artist peoduced by C and C Music Factory, my group was "The Brat Pack". We were on the Hitman and Her show and their tour thru the UK. We were with Big Fun and a few others. I miss London.
it was another sad loss when we lost David Cole ....but as you know,u never forget the music left behind...its the same with luther,he was and still is my all time favourite, and i still cant believe hes gone...Jonathon Butler has a great voice...lies is in my car at this moment,,,great track ...hahahahaa i remember the hit man and her..with pete waterman.used to watch it when i got home from the club i worked at,,ex bouncer...im in london myself, and its ok,,,,but better in the 80's my friend.
It fantastic to hear from you. i knew the video would evoke good memories for those that were close to Curtis and those that appreciated is heavenly talent.Let me know when Earl is about to release the new material.Real connissuers of 'r&b' are holding their breath in excitement. Thanks Patrick
Absolutely, He changed his business number but drops by once in a while. I am going to ask my friends who has the videos of his live stuff from the club we played at.
i am so glad someone posted this video i have been searching for it for years. curtis had a golden voice no one could match so sad he died before his time.
wahoo !!! you wowed me , very rare clip video , my god , what a strange face , never imagine like that ..... so incredible voice , body doesnot macth wit hit , but whatever , great vbes
Rare footage of the outstanding vocalist Curtis Hairston filmed in Central London during 1985.He battled through diabetes for many years and will be missed greatly for the music made as well as his warm and friendly demeanour.RIP
He promoted this single heavily in the UK in1985 & appeared on several UK TV shows like Top of the Pops which I remember being a very cool performance by Curtis! Would love to see this performance again!

R.I.P. Curtis you were one of the best and are sadly missed.
Long live his music!

I Knew There Had To Be A Video Of This Amazing Talent. One Of My All-Time Favorite Singers. His BB&Q Band And Solo Tracks Can Jamm To Any All Night Party Bash. RIP
FonkPazzion 3 years ago
he probably would have had a long and great career had he lived long enough. i knew him through a group of gay friends in the very early 80s in winston-salem n.c. he won a talent contest singing the greatest love of all.he was sweet and kind. a little wild needless to say. he went to new york and got a recording contract. he died many years ago i was told by people who grew up off cloverdale ave with him.

brilliant song by a wonderful singer. Curtis Hairston, LIzzy mercier Descloux, Weekend, Sylvia Striplin. Got me through the 80's.

This brings back the best memories. What happened to these type of great singer? This had made me want to go back to professional singing...
jeffphillip 3 years ago
My family and I attended the same church (First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC) as he did in the late 70's, even though I honestly was a little young to remember him then. My mom remembered him singing in the choir, and said that he had a wonderful voice.
I never knew that there was a video to this song, which is my favorite of his. But he is still very much missed here. R.I.P.

thats a great little story.....your choir must have sounded excellent...

Yeah, they did. My mother just told me that she remembers him sitting in the seat ahead of us, and remembers his curly hair. :)Fantastic singer.

in all poor languages curtis had a short definitely lined up life and a girlfriend has make it slobber, more, one; already in 25 old years as in the video, its illness l ' had employed well and he had to not too much s exhaust the diabete is a complex illness

was curtis gay, i heard he had aids. i,m not tryin, to start any drama, just curious.
mrfreeks 3 years ago
I understand your curiousity ... you're certainly not the first to ask the question.
For me whether gay or straight we should label the artist by their music.
A disease such as Aids is in the public domain and its your guess as well as mine as to whom has it and from whom they got it from.Nevertheless, organ failure has very similar hallmarks to complications that accompany the onset of HIV.You cannot stop the rumours...R&B is rife with 'gay artists'!Dont let this empty your CD collection!!
Augustus1850 3 years ago
He may have had AIDS by sharing needles (if he did drugs...but I'm not sure).
I know this is off subject of Curtis but, Wayne Cooper, falsetto member from Cameo (1976-1980) died of AIDS, but it was suggested that he was gay, until someone mentioned that it could have been caused from the un-sterilized needles (rumors of Heroin addiction).

Curtis was a lifelong diabetic, and his death was due to his illness.

right on...
thechunk 3 years ago
@OneMixDJ amen. I'm sick of everyone saying he died from drugs, AIDS, or cancer. Even if it was those things, does it really matter. He was diabetic from birth.

@trdxsd2010 Correct-sadly. Remember the talent and the great songs.

You know if he had other videos ("I Want You (All Tonight)" and "Chillin")?! Hes a North Carolina native, whose was only famous in Europe. How did he die?
Azone01 3 years ago
he suffered diabetes and subsequently died of kidney failure.....
Augustus1850 3 years ago
There is quite a lot of live footage floating around .But, according to contacts it may take some time getting to ...since its in storage.
However,it would be great to put an electro soul compilation together as the sound was terrific and in my opinion timeless.

We can go back anytime we turn on our cd players! Curtis was a southern gentleman and as nice as a saint. I turned Curtis on to Jonathan Butler in 88 and we added some of his tunes to his show. All the best mate.

He promoted this single heavily in the UK in1985 & appeared on several UK TV shows like Top of the Pops which I remember being a very cool performance by Curtis! Would love to see this performance again!
