Only 40 years ago, a Japanese researcher found out how to determine some types of whale's ages(there are more than 80 types of whales). Before that people even couldn't tell how old they were. You have to know their ecosystems if you want to protect the whales. Read the JARPAII Research Plan on website.

Only 40 years ago, a Japanese researcher found out how to determine some types of whale's ages(there are more than 80 types of whales). Before that people even couldn't tell how old they were. You have to know their ecosystems if you want to protect the whales. Read the JARPAII Research Plan on website.

My impression is that the seal hunt is opposed largely because of the brutality of it, which is easy to photograph, thus easy to use to raise a public outcry. The problem is, the slaughter of livestock every day to fill our grocery stores is no less brutal, but people have to eat, and therefore it's much harder to raise opposition. Also, northern native peoples still depend on these kinds of hunts. We need perhaps to minimize the cruelty of them, while recognizing the human right to live.

Actually, I haven't run into any large opposition to the seal hunt. The activists claim they have support but the seafood boycott failed, our exports having gone up in 2005 when the boycott started through to 2007. There were slumps here and there but it was worldwide, having been caused by China's exports.

The Act is called the Canadian Federal Marine Mammal Regulations ( MMR ) Sec 21 et seq making it *illegal* to observe or photograph a seal within 10 metres of the process of being killed by a seal hunter. Watson believes the babies are slaughtered, that is ignorance right there. It has been illegal to hunt whitecoats and bluebacks for over 20 yrs. Seals may only be harvested once they have started moulting (from 12 to 15 days of age for harp seals), as this coincides with the time when they are abandoned by their mothers. Dogs age quicker than humans (the x7 rule), so do seals - obviously if their own mothers begin to leave them after 2 weeks.

Typical politician!! Quoting statistics and figures to back up her lame position!! Statistics can be manipulated to prove anything. Shheeeeet!! I could prove that the sky is pink with statistics!! They mean nothing!! Cpt. Watson made her look completely stupid with knowledge and facts, but once that woman was off-air I'm sure she has never once thought about the Seal issue again, such are the powers that we live under.
