Its sad. Rich Mullins has been dead now for 14 years and we'll never hear anything like him ever again - but we still have the perpetual TobyMac machine pumping out one "let's get Crunk for Jesus" albums at least once a year. Sad.
I almosted hated to play this...last video of the concert...wanted to go on feeling this good forever. Thank you marcosagostos and God Bless you Rich and the Ragamuffins. Praise the Lord!
Rich is one of the few christians I have a lot of respect for even though I am an atheist. I still listen to his music and enjoy it, the only other christian artist I still listen to since leaving christianity is Keith Green. Thanks for the upload.
@ruefulquixote Yes, but shoot would Rich not be one of the coolest people to hang out with? I have doubted my faith at times, but I do know since I have accepted Jesus, I will be able to hang out with Rich for eternity!! So lookin' forward to it! "Heaven is for real"....great book, if you like to read(:
@ruefulquixote Say what you will, you may have drifted some away from Christianity, but that doesn't make you an atheist. Just remember, you can take a million steps away, but it is always just one step back to God, because he is following you wherever you go.
@ruefulquixote Did you ever notice that there isn't sad songs in Christian music? I left Christianity too - because of the people. Christians don't care. My world blew up and everyone turned away, then judged my steps while walking alone. But, God does care - He never stops. We like Rich and Keith because they're REAL.
@kelllygg Hey, I know just what you mean. My thing is, and what I've had to learn the hard way is that Christians are people just like everyone else, but what hurts worse is that you look towards your Christian brethren for love and support when you need it. Just like typical people they will smash you. What I've learned is to ask God, talk to God because He does love you. Remember what they did to Jesus, they will do to you as well, so He knows the pain.
I have always loved this man ...but I also respect the fact that he must of been called to a single life of ministry for winning souls and healing through his music ..If I was to ever of had the chance to be his wifee ....I bet he would of been one great husband !!! cause he loves the Lord so much and this kind of man is hard to find ...
I too am a CBC&S graduate (in the 80's)... But, I got to experience Rich as I took youth group kids to his concerts. He went against the flow, and seemed beyond what we learned in Bible College.... but I really believe he got it. He understood the basics of being a Christian: loving and serving God the best you know how without worrying what the world thinks of you. He had a powerful ministry!
I mean, to some extent, yeah--- and I think he would probably have embraced that label. Rich Mullins didn't want to be normal. He wanted to be a man of God. To him, if that meant being a little weird, that was okay.
I love You Rich Mullins...even though I didnt ever meet you ...I love you and if you were still here I would love to be your soulmaate!! Olivia in Park City, Utah
I wonder if there is a transcript of the whole show? You might Google "Calling Out Your Name" - it's my favorite web site about Rich. The man who runs that site has done a wonderful job for years and years. He might have something that would help!!
@amylh322: Yes, there is a transcript at COYN, but YouTube won't let me post links here. Just Google "Lufkin Transcript" and it will be the first link, from the address kid brothers dot net
Calling Out Your Name is THE website for all things Mullins. ;)
@scotkestrel That is a great site. The night Rich went to heaven, i was up all night with no one who knew him to talk to, so i looked up all i could find about him on-line. I printed it all and have a pretty cool/huge notebook, with stuff from the papers saved too. (Hopefully the person i answered will see your post)
You should all try to go see Mitch in concert - he just finished his fall leg but will probably be out again in early Spring. His shows are great - Rich would be so proud!!
Isn't odd, that Rich can stand up to the evangelicals, specifically "prosperity gospel" preachers (who have stacks of scriptures and millions of followers.) and destroy their notions about money, possessions, and family, saying "they are not bad. They are just wrong."
I shamelessly stole that phrase from him! It's so good though - they're not bad, they're just wrong. I think that is part of Rich's wonderful understanding of Grace.
I thought the joke was pretty funny. At the risk of over-explaining. Karl Barth was a famous theologian who was pointing out the perseverence of the Jews (presumably due to the faithfulness of God) as compared to the Hittites, a Biblical people now long gone, passed, as a distinct culture, into the sands of time.
isnt it kind of eerie to hear Rich talking about death so much in this segment, how he said if you die in your single it really doesnt matter. I think all of us who were not blessed to see Rich live might disagree.
maggie, i wish i heard about or got into rich when i was 4. there is no better writer than all of Christendom. I'm so glad he didn't care about marketing and wanted to stay in tune with the Scriptures and music.
I remember when I was a little girl and I'm only 19 now but he came to Greenville and I was with my parents and he asked if we were going to come to the show and if I'm not mistaken it had sold out and he gave my family tickets because he loved that even as a 4 year old girl I loved his music.
Rich went to be with the Lord, the same day my mom did. And my moms favorite song was Awesome God. So I have visions of mom meeting him in line to go into heaven, her singing that song, and him coming up to her and saying hey i know that song :)
Bible god commands people to murder babies in the time of Saul for the sins of their ancestors 400 years prior during the Exodus:
This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' [1 Samuel 15:2-4]
God made them, He had a reason He wanted them killed. Can't be explained. He made have sent them to immediately to heaven. Hard stuff in the Bible, but I still believe it.
So would you obey your god and kill little boys if your god asked you to?
Moses was angry with the officers of the army who returned from battle. "Have you allowed all the women to live? They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and turned the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. Now kill all the boys and kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.[Num 31:14-18]
It is a little odd how we can watch this clip--in which Rich denounces "proof-texting," saying that "God is right, and the rest of us are just guessing"--yet both webstercat and exodus21v20 can get into an argument based on proof-texting. You'll never fully understand or justify the mind of God through a purely scientific method.
By the way, how about that incredibly uncomfortable applause after the eighth minute? Sounds like there are some serious insecurities floating through that audience.
If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity. [Deut. 25:11-12]
The Christian (and Rich's) is that god inspired these verses.
The logical way to think about them is they are the product of a bronze-age patriarchal society that invented a god named Yahweh and put these words on his lips.
I heard he smoked occasionally. *So* not a big deal! Look at people in certain churches, constantly having events that are built around food. There is one entire denomination that seems based in the sin of Gluttony! I have asthma and am allergic to cigarettes. My BF smokes and i wish he wouldn't for the sake of his health, but it doesn't make him any less kind, loyal or loving. We should all take good care of our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. But it's not a salvation issue! So no judgey
He never drank or smoked or swore. He didn't buckle his seatbelt in the Jeep though..he was exhausted and forgot to after they stopped for fuel. An 18-wheeler ran him over after they flipped and he wasn't driving, he was a passenger, asleep.
@TheDudeJeffLebowski - You might want to have a chat with the other occupant of that jeep. His name is Mitch McVicker and his website is his name, no spaces, then dot and com.
@bush555 - Hee :) Yes, he had plumbing. Mitch talks about "spitting in the same sink while we brushed our teeth" in an interview that is actually posted here somewhere, so yeah they had plumbing. Just a really small trailer and then the hogan they built. :)
@Lehmann108 to my knowledge he never had a drug or drinking problem.. but he does look unhealthy here- there are a lot that were close to Rich that thought he had cancer towards the end of his life- not sure if it was ever confirmed though
Not sure where you are getting your rumors, but no, Rich was just what he said - exhausted. I know Mitch, i know several of his life-long friends.... none of that stuff has been mentioned & the cancer thing is really random. I would hate to be famous these days, with the internet and people saying stuff that cannot be refuted by the person being talked about.... since he's GONE. Please don't spread rumors, he still has a lot of family and friends & they don't need to see that.
Gosh I miss him. I wish I had time to watch all these videos, but I wanted to show my daughter some of Rich's performances. She loves his song O God you are my God and sings it all the time. (she is 8 years old). You see we saw Mitch McVicker last night and I wanted to show her the man Mitch was talking about. This is the 2nd time I saw him. He is really awesome in concert. But when he talked about his brother in Christ, Rich, I felt such still a pain in my heart.
"I may have the gift of inspired preaching;I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets;I may have all the faith needed to move mountains-but if I have no love,I am nothing."(1Corinthians13:2)God bless Rich Mullins:)
I never saw him in concert. What I do know is he spoke with honesty and transparency. He also was candid about the fact that many people feel they understand the unknowable. By no means did he lift himself up as an example, he spoke that Jesus was the example, not Rich Mullins. Rich wasn't making fun of the Bible. I don't know if you're a believer or not,but many times I find myself stammering as I try to see God's intent. ? God's right and the rest of us are just guessing Amen Rich Amen!
Actually, Jesus was very in-your-face when it came to challenging the people he spoke to. He used parables as a teaching tool, which were sometimes difficult to understand...He challenged people to think and reason for themselves. Rich just challenges us to reason for ourselves. He uses satire and humor as a tool. He's not judging, but he acknowledges that the Bible can be, and is, confusing at times. He's not perfect either, but he loves God, serves God, and works to spread His Glory.
This is why you have to watch this concert, and listen to Rich in context. Do you know what proof texting is? It is horrible!
I know no one who loved the Bible more than Rich Mullins. I know no one who followed Jesus more closely. His point is that yeah, the Bible is a book full of wild, crazy tales! And God LOVES these people anyway!
If it weren't for the fact that Rich allowed God to use him as a vessel, I have no idea where i'd be!*Also, at 5:01, he says "If you really want (cont)
spiritual nourishment, read your Bible". <-- These are not the words of a man who disrespected the Word of God.(This post is for GeoffreyPhilip, not sure why it's way up here!). Rich LOVED Jesus. He loved the Bible. I hope that answers your question better than 5 "thumbs down" did. God bless.
No, I didn't!! Where will I find it? (I think I thought it was a Gary thing. I'm sleepy though, so who knows :->)You know, Amy never sounded better than when she was doing Rich's songs.
I sent you a message with the link. anyway its too late now, it should have been downloaded in 3 days. took me 7 hours to upload it, though. Prob should upload the file on youtube, but these copyright problems are a pain. dont wana do something illegal.
Rich is on the right track here about Psalm 137:8-9 "O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." Rich says we were given the scriptures to humble us into realizing that god is right and the rest are just guessing. A better conclusion is that the Bible is not the work of a god. Even a 3 year old can discern this is not jesus' love for enemies.
Lost my faith for 5 years; drug addiction due to chronic pain. Yet who did Jesus pick? Common men, a tax collecter-the most despised vocation, a woman-no social standing, a betrayer. Jesus loved outcasts; lepers, possessed, blind, etc. It's sad, but in the bible many questioned his divinity, his purpose, his true identity - yet there was one group that always acknowledged who Jesus was on sight AND obeyed- demons. They knew him from creation, before their fall, and with The Father. Praise GOD!
Rich, you are so MUCH!!! I miss you terribly. I remember the time I met you at a concert in Houston. One of the highlights of my life. Your simple ways, devout faith and practical love of God are what I need. Thank you so much for being so transparent, with a rich faith that blesses others.
Rich, Thank you so much for your blessed music, spirit and character. I only pray that I can follow Jesus as closely and devoutly as you did. Peace to you!!!
I made the same mistake twice in a row, thinking positive first, I clicked without taking too much note of the positioning of the "thumb" until it was too late...I am so sorry, I meant to agree with your comment and the one right below...Is there a way to retract??? Well said and I am sorry, once again.
I miss you, bud. One thing for sure about Rich, if you met him once, he was your friend for life. Those interested should check out Derek Webb, former lead of Caedmon's Call who is walking down this same path in his Christian Music.
It's a great blessing from God to be encouraged and challenged by saints like Rich Mullins. Not that other Christian artists are bad, but people like Rich, Keith Green, Derek Webb, and I'm sure many others seem to have a special sensitivity to the Spirit that comes across so profoundly in their lives and ministry.
Thank you for posting these videos. They are a powerful testimony to "that reckless raging fury that they call the love of God."
Please see the comment I left for RPftw just above as I meant it also for you! Need to get those glasses now, I guess...I meant to agree with you...Thumbs up and I apologize!
I think we should follow Rich's example and do our very best to love one another...honestly,I'm so PROUD to know Rich Mullins in my life!Thank JESUS!!
Rich Mullins was a famous contemporary Christian musician. wikipedia has a good write up on him. Check him out in total not just from this video. One thing for sure, Rich was authentic.
I did look Rich up at Wikipedia and that was what linked me here! I agree with you that it is a very good write up about a standout musician, songwriter, fellow man...
Wow. What a teacher, eh? forget for a moment his musical genus and acknowledge his God given wisdom. Amen to his comment on minorities and gays, we should love and accept both. In Jesus's holy name. I cor 10:31
Foxes have holes and birds have nests but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head..........if you follow jesus don't expect wealth or glory or adulation
What a gold mine this video is. It is so rare to find clips of Rich teaching during his concerts, and he is so very engaging here in his brief talk about living spiritually. Never boring. Not at all preachy or pompous--instead, often super humorous and always witty and unpredictable. More than anything, always filled with the love of God. May he be rejoicing with the Lord in heaven. Super video...thanks so very much.
I was blessed to know Rich in 2004 through his song AWESOME GOD,to me,he's like a very dear brother...God bless Rich!!Thank the LORD for this special video!!
It's kind of creepy how he said "Sooner or later Life's gonna kill us all". His words prove true not too long after this was filmed. He was an amazing person. Sorely missed by all.

Does this guy always talk like this? He doesnt talk well of the Bible. Infact ridicules it sometimes.
geoffreyphilip 3 years ago
I think you completely missed the point. As far as does he always talk like this? Nope he's been dead for the last 11 years.
janter101087 3 years ago 2
Ofcourse i know he's been dead for a while :) Dead people cant talk. So what i meant is, does he talk like this in every concert when he was alive.
geoffreyphilip 3 years ago
I never saw him in concert. What I do know is he spoke with honesty and transparency. He also was candid about the fact that many people feel they understand the unknowable. By no means did he lift himself up as an example, he spoke that Jesus was the example, not Rich Mullins. Rich wasn't making fun of the Bible. I don't know if you're a believer or not,but many times I find myself stammering as I try to see God's intent. ? God's right and the rest of us are just guessing Amen Rich Amen!
janter101087 3 years ago 5
What u said makes sense. Yeah i'm a believer. Thanks.
geoffreyphilip 3 years ago 2

God bless.
amylh322 3 years ago
Yes it did answer my question about Rich. Well btw did you get my link i sent you to download the full album of Amy Grant? Did you get it?
geoffreyphilip 3 years ago
No, I didn't!! Where will I find it? (I think I thought it was a Gary thing. I'm sleepy though, so who knows :->)You know, Amy never sounded better than when she was doing Rich's songs.
amylh322 3 years ago
I sent you a message with the link. anyway its too late now, it should have been downloaded in 3 days. took me 7 hours to upload it, though. Prob should upload the file on youtube, but these copyright problems are a pain. dont wana do something illegal.
geoffreyphilip 3 years ago
I never got it. Maybe it was illegal and an angel stopped it :-D

Wow. What a teacher, eh? forget for a moment his musical genus and acknowledge his God given wisdom. Amen to his comment on minorities and gays, we should love and accept both. In Jesus's holy name. I cor 10:31

I recommend trying to get a hold of his writings. His views are some of the most profound that I have ever read.

I agree, I'm going to take your advice.
He's so on target with what he's saying here.
I'm sure there are many who don't understand the wisdom he's sharing. But I understand too.
I'll have to his writings.
