You can wonder the same thing about any cartoons generally and wherever they're made. They just don't strive for realism for the most part.

@general29 I think they do personally, or at least, they either look Japanese or like some huge eye alien. However, if you've ever seen Japanese pop idols and stuff, they tend to put a lot of makeup on to make their eyes look big and try and keep their skin pale.

@general29 That's a good question, I never noticed that . Then again not all animes take place in Japan, nor do all japanese people have small eyes (like it's stereotyped). Some characters in the movie look like that (Nezu, the Colonel, Shimasaki and some other minor characters), while others like Tetsuo and Kaneda have that look from a certain angle .

They look way more japanese in the manga though .
