Ah, the good old Chart Show's trick of playing slowed down versions of an older video where a band don't have a clip for their new single (see Afghan Whigs and Teenage Fanclub). These were good times for alternative music, though...
Always thought the new fads were foobar, and watching this confirms it. Pointless waste off space sixth formers without a clue. The world ia a better without them.
thankyoooooooo for posting these charts! I used to sit with finger posied overthe pause button on my video to try and record the best songs - I always recorded the chart show in full - wish I had kept them!
If anybody has some old chart show recordings from back in it's day please contact me and I'll be happy to trade in some of my recordings for a copy of yours.
I haven't heard that New Fast Automatic Daffodils song in AGES, I absolutlely loved it and was gutted when the tape I'd recorded it on got damaged, so nice to hear it again!
yep...unfortunately the Grunge sound was taking over, especially here in the States..but thank goodness that Gaze is back again! Lots of cool new bands playing the sound these days =)
This chart was actually created by phoning up indie record shops and taking their staff's word for the number of copies they'd sold in the previous week. I was one the staff who had to relay our shops figures...over time I'd get more and more extravagant with the numbers...I loved the New FADS!
They often did this when there was no video available, and always slowed it down so there might be a chance that the vocals from the other song synched up for a second or two!
Even funnier was the dance chart, when it was largely made up of stills of the bands, maybe with some technicolour effect added...
didn't always slow it down . . . usually tried to find something that wasn't lipsynced from another video and as a last resort we would cobble something up in the suite
Well done for posting these two great songs especially It's Not What You Know. I still got Pigeonhole on CD but some scumbag nicked Exit Body Mind but I just found a copy via Amazon and found this nostalgia. John Peel's favourite band name.
Thank you for posting this. I have been searching intermittently for "It's not what you know" all year. An absolute classic, sadly not matched by the New FADS let alone anyone else

When were you with them? was it during the time they used the Plaza?
rogwatling 4 years ago
I worked in a shop! Not for the company who did the chart - just gave them the sales figures.

The Afghan Whigs video is actually from the song "Turn on the Water"
Teenage Fan Club's video is actually from the song "The Concept"
The Smashing Pumpkins video is actually from the song "Rhinoceros"
