@ANewSherrifInTown Well, it may not be the national anthem but Edelweiss ARE the Austrian national flower. Literally it means "noble white". Very patriotic song, very beautiful...
The way the Captain looked at Maria in the end had me falling in all kinds of love... I swear if a man like him looked at me that way i might climb those kids to get to him...hahha dont shoot me please. but THAT LOOK coming from THAT MAN is just dreamy.
So, my father told me that a lot of people think that this is Austria's national anthem. Well, um, no. It's not. Then again, I guess people actually can figure this out by looking it up on youtube... Probably pre-youtube belief?
on the sound of music tour in vienna and salzburg they said that he diddn't sing any of the songs and he had a voice double. also that he was kinda a douche.
I also like this scene in the movie best. And it is the one song left off the sound tract! The include the performance at the festival later in the movie, but it is not the same.
1:49 I hated that bitch when I was little! ahaha I watched it about 3 times a day til I was about 6 (no exaggeration) starting at age 2. Id get mad whenever I'd see her face. lol
The funny thing is that hardly anyone in Austria even knows that movie or has seen it (I'm Austrian myself so I should know). And many of those who have don't like it very much. That's because thanks to this film most Americans (and people from other countries as well) think that all Austrians are like that - which by the way is NOT true.
@x0janine0x This portrays Austrians in a very positive way, so im not sure why anyone would take offense. Im not entirely sure what people are supposed to think of Austrians from this movie. I certainly don't use this movie as a reference. No, i usually think of Metternich, or Marie Theresa, or even that German saying in WWI: "fighting alongside Austria was like being chained to a corpse" XD before i'd use this movie as a basis for my opinion of Austria.
@rahl182 That speaks in your favour, but I've experienced it myself that a lot of people DO use movies as a reference. I know that the movie doesn't paint a negative picture of Austria, but it uses all the clichés like Edelweiss, Leatherpants etc. and some people acutally think that Austrians still wear these clothes all the time or go Edelweiss picking every day and some Austrians tend to find that a bit annoying. It's like going to England and expecting everyone to drink tea at 5 o'clock.
I've always Absolutely Loved This Performance! It reminds of G-d's Righteous One. Edelweiss, means Noble White, which is Honorable Righteous! The Song means far more than some white flowers out in a Austrian Field, The Song is a Song of Praise to the Righteous Redeemder! It's the most Beautiful Thing! The Father ends up saving his family from the evil through Praising the Righteous One, and they escape! =D
"Christopher Plummer's own voice" this isn't Chris' voice. Chris couldn't sing so the brought in someone who could sing and dubbed the voice. The person remains uncredited.
@loll423 haha I went to Salzburg. All the people there hate Sound of Music since Salzburg's basically a tourist attraction for Sound of Music lovers. (People apparently have a hard time not confusing Austria with Australia, so they distinguish themselves with Sound of Music, their one "claim to fame.") In other words, the people of Salzburg are bombarded with Sound of Music all the time lol.
@keira477 This musical wasn't that popular in Austria at all. Only in the last years. And Salzburg BASICALLY a tourist attraction for the Sound of Music?? LOL. You have no idea obviously. Maybe you went there because of it, but most people go because it's first a beautiful city and second because it's Mozart's city.
@keira477 They don't hate it because it's a tourists attraction but the movie reminded them of what happened in the war. Take some history lessons. And they don't hate it anymore, they even sing along with the music. And I've been to Salzburg many, many, MANY times.
@Saartje05 Wow, I was speaking generally, from the point of view of an average person visiting Austria and based on my visit there several years ago. At the time, I felt overwhelmed by all the Sound of Music hype and memorabilia, especially considering it was Mozart's 250th birthday celebration, and I expected to see more Mozart hype than anything else. The people there did not seem to enjoy Sound of Music being advertised everywhere, and people I talked to said they hated it.
@keira477 You mean the average AMERICAN person visiting Austria, because I´ve never seen a ´Sound of Music hype´ myself in Salzburg, EVER. And I need more than two hands to count the number of times I´ve been to Salzburg.
@Saartje05 Congrats on your numerous visits to Salzburg! You should be so proud of this monumental achievement! I'm currently minting you an award, "Most pointless self-indulgent Youtube comment of the year." But if you're at the level where you still need your fingers to help you count, I don't think you've gotten very far in life, so I may have to withhold the award.
@Saartje05 I personally don't view Salzburg as a Sound of Music tourist attraction - the city is quite beautiful, and I of course enjoyed touring and playing in an orchestra for "Mozart's city" even though it was a city he himself hated funnily enough. However, the majority of people I know wouldn't be aware that the city existed if not for the Sound of Music, something I can only assume the people of Salzburg don't appreciate.
@keira477 Again, the America people you know wouldn´t be aware the city existed if not for the Sound of Music. I´m sorry, but that says a lot about the people you know.
@Saartje05 You sound like a fucking twat. You probably don't know shit about anything outside of the dump of a cul-de-sac you grew up on. Oh wait, you never grew up - I think you barely got through the complete gestation period.
@BoxedSerial Funny you people can't stand the truth. Because that's what I'm telling. You obviously rather read nonsense that isn't true. But hey, that's your problem isn't it?
@Saartje05 *paid, champ. AND DON'T JUDGE THE LIFESTYLES OF OTHER PEOPLE. Just because you've moved passed the prostitution and on to drug dealing, doesn't mean you can get all high-and-mighty with people who remind you of your past.
@Saartje05 Boo, you whore. I believe in my dreams, and that someday we will meet and make love. I also believe that someday I will find my Pokemon Red game cartridge. That little shit has been lost forever, and I never got the chance to start out with Squirtle - only Charmander and Bulbasaur.
@loll423 that's because americans made a movie about your country and used american and english actors. If it was an austrian film it would be different... as they probably got many facts wrong putting their own perceptions on things, and austrian people watching will notice these things which probably takes away from the beautiful film. Americans do it to us british a lot, it's very annoying.
The subtle brilliance of Eleanor Parker's acting is profound. With just her eyes, you could see when she lost her Captain and with dignity and sadness, walks away. Bravura performance, class actress.
it's funny bc on oprah brigette (i think thats his eldest daughters name) says that she had a big crush on him! so now when I watch this all i think is how she is staring at him!
I like how his fiancee is not cast as a jealous, snotty bitch like in a typical Hollywood movie where Maria must fight her, but how she looks at Maria and realises that Maria loves the Captain and is willing to give him up for their happiness. Such a better story than the supposed conflict required in modern Hollywood movies.
@wainscottbl Have you watched the movie? Later in the movie, Elsa confronts Maria in her room, and intimidates Maria into leaving the house and going back to the convent. Then we see Elsa drinking champagne with Max to celebrate her victory. It is not until later, when Maria comes back, that Elsa realizes the situation is hopeless, and even then, it was the Captain who had to tell her.
oh my god...on the last version of the song - when everyone and the auidence began singing, I actually got goosebumps all up my left side and shivers. :') Such a beautifully tragic way of representing the rebellion against the Nazi's.
My mother grew up in Austria in 1938 - she loved this movie and we watched it every year - you can see her life's story LadyRider2007 at You Tube.com. - Thanks
Always LOVED this song and this part in the movie........beautiful song!!!!!!!! And loved how it showed the Captain finally showing a more "human" side of himself to the children and everyone else.........one of my favorite movies!!!!!!
I love how much this song expresses - his love for his homeland, for his family...and for Maria and his wish for her to "bless his homeland" forever when he looks at her in the end. I love the subtle way they show that the Baroness has realized that Maria is a potential rival when she notices the way the Captain and Maria are looking at each other across the room.
@lessisbeautiful Also love that is shows how out of place the Baroness is in that family, and how much more a cohesive unit it is with Maria in it...such a lovely song :)
@lessisbeautiful But its a love he LOST... CaptianTrapp was a officer in the Austrian-Hungarian Army and after the bad treaties of Paris (they were bad even the western historican say that the were unfair and bad of the future of europe) Austria felt back in situation were humble men were thrown out of the country.

NGWH07041997 7 months ago
@NGWH07041997 maybe it's because the uploader is Thai?
ratz30 7 months ago
@ratz30 I've been told that Thai women are the most lovely and desired women in the world. Unlike American women, they are NEVER loud and angry.
nyc4044 6 months ago
@nyc4044 That's because they've been beaten into submission to men through the ages. Nice idea of "desired" women.

@anditspaganpoetry Asian culture was always unkind to women, and their characters still show that.
