The funny thing is that hardly anyone in Austria even knows that movie or has seen it (I'm Austrian myself so I should know). And many of those who have don't like it very much. That's because thanks to this film most Americans (and people from other countries as well) think that all Austrians are like that - which by the way is NOT true.

I certainly don't use this movie as a reference. No, i usually think of Metternich, or Marie Theresa, or even that German saying in WWI: "fighting alongside Austria was like being chained to a corpse" XD before i'd use this movie as a basis for my opinion of Austria.

I know that the movie doesn't paint a negative picture of Austria, but it uses all the clichés like Edelweiss, Leatherpants etc. and some people acutally think that Austrians still wear these clothes all the time or go Edelweiss picking every day and some Austrians tend to find that a bit annoying. It's like going to England and expecting everyone to drink tea at 5 o'clock.

I've always Absolutely Loved This Performance! It reminds of G-d's Righteous One. Edelweiss, means Noble White, which is Honorable Righteous! The Song means far more than some white flowers out in a Austrian Field, The Song is a Song of Praise to the Righteous Redeemder! It's the most Beautiful Thing! (People apparently have a hard time not confusing Austria with Australia, so they distinguish themselves with Sound of Music, their one "claim to fame.") In other words, the people of Salzburg are bombarded with Sound of Music all the time lol.

The people there did not seem to enjoy Sound of Music being advertised everywhere, and people I talked to said they hated it.

I like how his fiancee is not cast as a jealous, snotty bitch like in a typical Hollywood movie where Maria must fight her, but how she looks at Maria and realises that Maria loves the Captain and is willing to give him up for their happiness. Such a better story than the supposed conflict required in modern Hollywood movies.

@wainscottbl Have you watched the movie? Later in the movie, Elsa confronts Maria in her room, and intimidates Maria into leaving the house and going back to the convent. Then we see Elsa drinking champagne with Max to celebrate her victory. It is not until later, when Maria comes back, that Elsa realizes the situation is hopeless, and even then, it was the Captain who had to tell her.

I love how much this song expresses - his love for his homeland, for his family...and for Maria and his wish for her to "bless his homeland" forever when he looks at her in the end. I love the subtle way they show that the Baroness has realized that Maria is a potential rival when she notices the way the Captain and Maria are looking at each other across the room.
