I'm tempted on taking apart my GTX 280 in order to properly clean out the dust inside, my computer gets dusty fairly quick, with fear 3 (known to make some cards overheat) my gpu peaks at 83°C (with the ADT7473 sensor) and the pcb at 67°C (same sensor) btw 26-27°C ambient now. Should i attempt to clean my GTX 280 or the temps are good? If i open it, do i need to clean and put back thermal paste everywhere it's needed? Or just reassembly the card like a barbarian without using new thermal paste?
@AnotherBeerMovie yes take it apart, remember to ground yourself to remove any static electricity, and remember that you would need thermal compound.
i pushed my core clock from 810-925Mhz and my screen went black for ~5sec and furmark crashed. Omg panic, i downclocked it to 900Mhz, should i downclock it abitmore?
why the fuck would you do that???? theres not even a noticeable performance difference you shit head, stop being a nerd and leave it stock before you kill it..
no airflow stating the obvious, all the heat radiating from the two bottom cards - right into the fan of the top one. Double the heat since the chipset is right on top of it and its burning too cus its got 3 monster cards pushing tons of bandwidth. liquid cooled would have been much more of a test don't you think?
why even make a video of such an obvious disaster?
:*( you could have given a poor child 2 whole years of joy and fun time. SHAME!
@STimmortal No, that GPU is shit. It didn't last 1 week. I kept getting PSoD after PSoD after PSoD. I can't RMA and a lot of people have the same problem as me. So no, that GPU is not perfectly fine.
Nah, I doubt that card burned out. You would certainly need a volt mod to do any serious damage. These cards shut down at 110-115C. That video corruption was due to the VRAM becoming corrupted due to heat. If you let it cool, it would work again. I had one of these at launch, and there was a defect with some of these cards; they would do exactly what happens in this vid. Leave it 10mins and it would work again. Needless to say the card wasn't dead, but faulty. A swap-out fixed that problem.
@1987xenovarocker : Actually the card was damaged badly, upon reboot, the PC would continually BSOD until that specific card was removed from the machine...
As always though, EVGA came through and honored the warranty...
@trubritar I stand corrected. Though, through my own experiences with the early 200 series (I was a system builder) about 40% of the systems I built did the very thing in this vid, yet the cards functioned perfectly after they had cooled. I ran PCMark05 and 3DMark Vantage on all of the systems I built to test them hard for stability. Not one of them managed to take a crap in the way that the 280 in your video managed to. I had to have all these cards, including my own launch 280 swapped. EVA FTW
the card died because of the closed airflow... i mean, the second card is blocking about 90% of the air which is needed to cool the first video card.... :'( overclock + SLI is not really a good combination...
i miss these trubritars older videos :/, he was way more enthusiastic and funnier :) if you read this trubritar i suggest you start doing your videos this way again with you talking more etc :)
nice one though but for example i could have used that gtx 280, and ain´t that kinda stupid to have fans like dat since they dont really get eny fresh air?
i seen alot of Nvida cards can thanle high clocks i have seen some one push a XFX 5770 to 1038Mhz core 1350Mhz memory volts at 1.4 but overclocking ant worth it just get a second card or just buy a XXX or FTW edisons
all those cards together they can't breathe, its like trying to breathe through a damn straw, I think these are the older, dual PCB GPU's, the newer ones have a single PCB and you can get nice waterblocks for them, try the revised version, slap a few water blocks on them then overclock them, they will run much cooler and take a higher overclock.. i just have 1 gtx 280 in my machine, I am waiting for Fermi hehe to be released
Those cards were overclocked for days running those test, on stock tests they were fine. Sorry ironlemmy, but to burst your bubble, he TRIED to burn a card out.

6600GTs have been known to reach 140-150C and still work stable even on games such as The Sims 2.
115C is nothing in comparison, 105C is the specification however. Every 10C halves the chip's life until it reaches the point where it burns itself out to a paperweight in a shorter time.
The highest I've seen my eVGA 8600 256MB was 104C with a voltmod + OC and up to 88C stock but cooler sucks, with some cool air I was able to manage below 85, in a year worth of usage though, I never damaged it.
Well actually it thermal-shutdowns at 115C, that might have been what happened to yours... unless it really did die, which could have been from the intense stress at an unstable OC or continuous overheating.
"Well actually it thermal-shutdowns at 115C, that might have been what happened to yours... "
Agreed. I don't think the card actually failed. I think it just shut itself off at ~115c in order to protect itself. Certainly, its life could have been reduced and overclocking capability could have been lowered, but I bet if he let the card cool down and then started the computer again, it would have worked fine again at stock speeds.
Ive overclocked my ATI HD 4670 like crazy and its says its 32 C not doing anything and 50 C when playing any games. I got 8 fans in my computer so I hope I dont fry it :P

i overclocked my ati 2400 pro and even though it has been fine for about a year its decided to die on me. I think its time to invest in a decent card and an extra fan. good video mate.

Lmao this guy made me check my temps again on my GTX 280..
Under 80 ^_^
My card can't overclock to save its life though, 730 stable on core, but it can't even get to 1250 mem without turning into a christmas kaleidoscope.

3x SLI GTX 280 Overclocked! Ha
What a rubbish setup.
Only kidding, but my Intel GMA 950 will own these cards up any day. 64mb Shared memory is what i'm talking about!
400mhz core clock and a staggering 10.6gb/s memory bandwidth, the GTX series doesnt stand a chance.
Dedicated video memory sucks, shared memory 4 life!

I've tested how much temperature my 8800GTS 320MB endure .... It was the result was 153 ° C hot and intervened, which still works ^^

Don't bullshit around. My graphics started flickering @ 70°C. 8800GTS G80 is crap.
MugenRac1ng 3 years ago
Most graphics cards are designed to still work at 110 degrees.
70degrees isnt anything high for a 8800, my mate reguly got 80 before changing fan speeds with riva tuner

My GTX 280 OC crapped out at 104 C in TF2 after shooting a wall for 5 minutes straight. No damage, just shut down my PC for a minute ;D
