How wonderfully nostalgic to see the great Mr.Bruggen in action when he was oh so much younger. It's hard to remember him without his head of white hair and his uniek way of conducting. We players of recorders have him to thank for his major contribution in bringing the instrument back into popularity. Go Frans!!
@ltschriscrucker You may criticize his smoking cigarettes even more. He is someone who does things different as you can see especially from newer music.
This is the instrument these works were written for!!!! All the colors are brought out by the subtle, earthy nature of the recorder... It doesn't sound right on a flute, or an oboe
A man in the recorder orchestra I played in said Telemann wrote the most music for the recorder. Like the father of the recorder. It bring you straight away to a different era.
The video is excellent, but I don't think this is either one of the "famous" Bressan altos in Brueggen's collection, since this one has double holes on 6 and 7 and both of his originals had single holes and play with Hotteterre fingering rather than English fingering. More likely this is a copy by Martin Skowronek at A415 rather than the actual pitch of surviving Bressan alto recorders which varies from A403 to A408.
from the composer to the player, from the people who cared recording this video to those who care watching it,this shows how beautiful our species can be.thank you to all.
No it has not. When you are playing you can put the finger number 8 (samll finger right hand) near the ring, that means near the last hole in the recorder just to keep in balance and be kind of free and relaxing meanwhile you are playing.
I am curious as to the twisting motion he employs. That is to say he tends to twist the instrument on individual notes...I noticed this also on the video of Pavanne Lacrymae as well. Is this to "move" the tone about acoustically or something? Anyone know?
Yes, actually, I know. He twists when he needs to play a high F# because you have to cover the bottom of the recorder to get that note out, and the easiest way is to cover it with your knee. That's also why he's sitting. It's pretty tricky to master while standing, and could result in a chipped tooth or two, if not worse.
I am referring to the "rolling" movement of the recorder in his hands. You can see it in the video of the Van Eyck as well. He rolls the recorder on the lip with his hands constantly. Seems to be conected with the way he also raises the arms on most notes. He raises the arms (like a chicken's wings), rolls the recorder in the same action.
Ahhh, sorry, my mistake. Actually I know that too. I was a student to his student Eva Legene for a couple years a while back, and she does it too, and explained the purpose of it... which is... to keep your body, mainly your neck, shoulders, and arms very fluid and loose, because the body movement evokes the strongest, steadiest, and clearest tone. It actually wrinkles out all the little buzzes and odd little woody sound effects from the instrument, and uhhh running out of space...
and there are also toothy sound effects, both of which happen naturally when you're just blowing straight through the instrument. It's actually rather scientific, in a slightly frou frou way, but you have to expect a little of that when you're any kind of artistic student.
*toothy* meaning as the air travels through your throat and mouth, and teeth, it gets slightly buzzy from bouncing wrong on your teeth. Sorry for getting a little overly descriptive, but I don't know how to explain it with any fewer words.
I assumed most of the twisting and other lip movement was to do with intonation, because it appears that he is moving the mouth piece (sorry if that's not what it's called) in and out slightly of his mouth.
i might be wrong.. I don't play the recorder, I play the flute. my knowledge of recorder playing is pathetic, especially considering that fact that I am a flute player. But I thought covering more up was a way to change intonation, as clarinettists and oboists do.
p.s... I've watched it again and can see that the rolling seems to be about covering the holes properly. (Am I right? I think that's what you basically said).
But watching his lips, I'm still inclined to think some of the movement is to do wiht intonation.
I do not know what instrument he is playing, but it is not an original Bressan. I know of no surviving Bressan with double holes, and very few 18th c. recorders with double holes. I did hear that the so-called "Chester" recorders by Bressan had double holes, but I do not know if this is correct.
In this video, Brueggen is playing a modern copy at A415, my guess being Skowroneck, but maybe Coolsma.
What a performer and what an instrument! I grew up with Frans Brüggen recordings so this is a wonderful trip down memory lane for me. This Bressan recorder has the most astonishing sound. Michala Petri has her place, but Brüggen is the true class act for me.
This Bressan instrument is made by Bressan in the period that he has his work in London. That is this one. The English people found it easier to play with the double holes. Also the normal Braock grib of playing was used in England and Bressan than made recorders in London. In France he made instrument for the French recorder players and he made the instruments in French Braock grib abd the single holes under.
hello, I have always loved this recording, I thinks he´s one of the best musicians of the recent times, as a recorder player, as a conductor and of course as a fire starter of the early music movement we know... I was just wondering if anyone know a bit more about the recorder he´s playing here, is that an historical instrument? beacuse you say his "famous Bressan recorder"
Hello, FRans has the most famous collection of historical recorders (Bressan, Stanesby, Wyhe, Heitz, Hotteterre). These are all measured and technically drawn by Morgan and published in print (Zen). He has 2 Bressan recorders that are top notch. One of these is used in this recording, like some other recordings he's made.
Current builders of historical recorders all use the Morgan-drawings to copy these Bressans e.o.
Henry Ganty

The key is D minor. The first 3 notes are D F A. It´s because the recorder played by Mr Brüggen is tuned a semitone lower than the modern pitch. (A=415 Hz instead of A=440 Hz). Most baroque musicians of today, play in A= 415 to be more authentic.

But I never played a recorder tuned a 404 Hz. I had a copy of T. Steneby an the sound is relly similar but is tuned at 415 Hz. .....

Hello all. Only a few words about the recorder in this video. This is not one of Bruggen's original Bressan altos. His Bressans have simple holes, no doubles like this. It could be another original Bressan or a copy.
Here is The best recorder player heared in the world. This is the Reason that The Recorder Players assosiation gave the price..The Millenium Recorder Player!!
For me, if you blow well (with the 'diaphragm') you can stay as you want. And Brüggen is perfect, as we can hear from his fantastic sound. I would play in all postures, also on my fridge, if I could have 'that' sound :-) And also 'those' musical gift & knowledge! W Brüggen, the best performer of all times !
For me Frans Brüggen is the best recorder player of XX century and, probably, of all times !! And the Telemann's fantasias... Thank you very much for posting this wonderful video.
