  • Great video! I think I just about got all that. So storage wise for H.264 it is better to have decentralised which means local storage e.g on your own network e.g NAS Hard Drives etc and for Centralised its better to use Mpeg4 or even better to use Mjpeg. I'm guessing streaming (viewing only, not storage) is still going to be better using H.264 due to lower bandwidth. If you can only afford one cam ideal solution one that supports all formats so you can select according to your use/future use?

  • @viper8177 at this point in time you will be hard pressed to find a decentralized megapixel H.264 surveillance system. To record H.264 directly to attached storage is currently not viable, as a central NVR will still be required. On that point, check out the new video entitled "Video Surveillance Systems: Centralized vs. Decentralized" which discusses this further.

  • this is great

  • Great review! Thanks for doing a thorough run-through for real-world uses and providing a cost comparison.

  • WTG!! h264 got PWNED - MxPEG FTW!!

  • While H.264 offers many benefits, what is being highlighted here is that H.264 is not cost effective when used in a centralized video surveillance system - (see YouTube video "Choosing a video surveillance system: Part 1") - regardless of the storage advantages offered. Our intent is to encourage customers to compare the overall system cost between both centralized and decentralized surveillance system, before making a buying decision.

  • Very good presentation, congratulations but you have not mentioned storage requirements. h.264 can be upto 80% more effecient than MJPEG so when you factor in storage costs how does it effect your cost comparison for similar recording times?

  • @tarmons Storage costs are the cheapest of all components of a computer.

  • helpful explanation! danke u

  • straight to the point & clearly explained - nice one.

  • very interesting information, thanks!
