I'm not sure why there are so many comments about how awful the mob was. Is it really all that surprising that people who lived in desperate poverty and who had no social standing or respect in their society weren't brimming over with the milk of human kindness?
People can get mean when they're hungry and looked down upon.
Yes people can get mean when they are in poverty. But this isn't "mean" this is downright barbarism and insane, mindless killing. The Reign of Terror was called so for a reason. It is surprising because we in our society that cannot fathom such cruelty and violence. Not all of the "peasants" were like this though, so it's no excuse to torture innocent people. The princess did not directly contribute to France's problems. She was but a product of her raising. So sad. =(
@xbellabebex I don't see that things that happened during that time are any more cruel than things that happened in WWII or Bosnia or Rwanda. And if you are hungry and tired and cold and uneducated and have no hope of anything better ever for yourself or your children, you might find it difficult to care very much about the well fed, warm, charming lady in the pretty dress.
@Smithpolly The people slaughtered in Bosnia, Rwanda, were treated no less cruelly than the Princesse de Lamballe. But poverty is irrelevant to guilt. Only intellectual/mental illness affects mens rea. Just because you, or your children, are poor, doesn't mean you can have revenge on people who had it better than you. That's jealousy gone mad. I'd find it hard not to tear the people who did this to the Princesse limb from limb, but I'd never, ever take it out on their wives or children
@trixwiz7 Jealousy? Why did the aristocracy have it better than the poor? Because they worked hard ? Because they were intelligent? Or was it because they were corrupt? Was it because they made laws to suit themselves? Was it because they abused their power and position? If the poor were cruel, they learned it from their masters.
Princess de lamballe was a murdered. She was safe but decided to return to Paris as a loyal friend to Marie ect. A mob of mindless cowards fell on her and did what cowards do. She never deserved that. As well as i'm sure countless thousands who dies during the terror.
I hope the bastards who killed the innocent Princess de Lamballe have been rotting in hell ever since. She didn't do anything to them and neither did the king or queen. The economic problems of France owed to the millions spent during the reign of Louis the 14th about 70 years before. The Sun King spent big money on many wars and on the palace of Versailles. Don't forget all the chateaux that were built with the removal of peasant homes and lands.
Historical fact that Marie Antoinette did not see the head of her friend, stuck upon a pike. She was informed of the reason behind the commotion outside, and indeed fainted upon learning the truth. But it was a municipal worker, a woman we today would call a 'housekeeper,' that looked out a window, saw the head, and screamed. The crowd, however, were overjoyed when hearing the scream, believing it to have come from the queen. And Jane Seymour made for a very unconvincing Marie Antoinette.
@Glenn1441 Jane Seymour was still better as Marie Antoinette than that God awful Kirsten Dunst in the recent 2006 version. Kirsten Dunst was the worst Marie of all time with her 2006 American accent, with no real character depth taking on the role as if she was doing her usual type of romantic comedy crap
@TheAmericanEvita Have to agree with you there. Sofia Coppola's film fell very short of her own vision. I happened to be at Versailles and Trianon during filming, and it was clear that filming was very rushed due to the fact that the chateaux continued to be open to the public... And Dunst is horrid in the role. For my money, resemblance is key to portraying a historical figure, and Norma Shearer was fantastic as MA (though the film is nothing more than pure Hollywood fantasy)...
The people behaved as were without souls or (feelings). They were beyond rational thinking. They had the taste of blood in them and they walked the streets like a pack of wild dogs. I would have shitted on myself if i came to the window and saw in the candle lit night a friends head on the end of a mobs stick. And screamed like a bitch.

my god what a horrible account, princess de lamballe was a blood princess of the bourbon dynasty she was a devoute christian and remained pure her whole life she never desirved such a horrible death! after her majesty was executed her son died on neglect, they made him forget he was ever a royal they beat him and raped him until he died of hunger. but madame royal survived the revolution and was set free in 1795. she suffered from PTSD and severe panic attacts for the rest of her life!
