Alright, I've been wanting to build a 1 ton diesel 4x4 Econoline (75-91 era), but the Powerstroke and 5.9 Cummins are both too common. But a 6V53 looks like it's actually a great match.. and it's been right under my nose the whole time; you can find these anywhere cheap.
You forgot to do slam your hand in the door before you drove your truck, number 1 rule of a Detroit. Very cool truck, now I want to put a detroit in my 2500 Suburban!
Slick ride! I've contemplated finding a short-wheelbase, single axle '67-'72 Chevy or GMC medium duty cab & chassis and swapping a 6-53 or even a 6-71 Detroit into it. Those old Detroits sound wicked!
One of my many projects is a '71 GMC sprint- the kissing cousin of the El Camino. I'm kicking around the idea of swapping in a 90's era GM 6.5 turbodiesel. What do you think?
Hey I really love your truck. But can this compete against a cummins 5.9 12V ?
Like could you get huge injectors n turbo? and an auto built trans? Just asking because one day id like to put a 6v92 or something in a old truck but want it to be as fast as a 500hp dodge like mine..
@baallzdeep This Truck Without A Turbo Runs Faster Than My Buddies 2000 Ford Diesel on propane. I Am Willing To Bet It Will outlast Any 5.9 12v and Pull Just As Hard With A turbo.
@streetwires01 A non-turbo 6V-53 pulls about 450-460 ft. lbs. torque at about 1700 RPMs and is 215 HP (195 HP post-1972). The Cummins in a Dodge Ram is 300+ HP but the maximum torque is 400 ft. lbs.
@baallzdeep i didnt a turbo there so if theres not there already i dont think theres enough room for a turbo under that hood and i guessing he had to beef up the front end of that pickup truck to even subport the weight of that motor i wounder if it too light now in the rear end is? iv seen some pickups where its so light in the rear that these bob around after going over small humps and it makes it harder to control when driving them around its alot of work to do something like this
Only thing that would kind of bother me with owning a 2-stroke diesel is that it sounds like it's running a lot more RPM then it really is, so when I get back into my 4-strokes, I'd end up thinking I can wind it out further then I actually can and throw a rod.
pure aural SEX listening to that thing! Oh God, I'd never get tired of driving it just to hear it. Talk about waking up the neighbors on a cold morning! Everyone with asshole neighbors like what I have needs one.
It's nice to hear a Detroit Diesel that the rack is set right. Tell who ever set the rack "good job" that's the way they are suppose to sound. About 80% of all two stroke Detroits are not running up to par and people don't even know it. I know two mechanics that know something about Detroit Diesels that the factory doesn't know, after hearing their motors run the rest are disappointing except yours. IT SOUNDS GOOD!!!
@joedrummer2010 They use 3 53 and 4 53 in older Nodwells. They leak there too. I ran two '70's FN-60's and did the maintance on them. Procedure. Remove front two skid plates, shovel up the floor dry, change the oil, bolt up the skid plates and finally, lift the engine door and dump in another bag of floor dry. We did enviromental drilling, looks bad if the rigs leaks more than the spill your testing!!! I love the detroit's powerband, 2 stroke all the way.
You know, my dad worked on Detroits of all shapes and sizes for years as a marine mechanic. He lovingly calls them "Drip-Troits"(apparently, in marine applications, they tend to leak more fluids). He liked this video, and could appreciate the novelty factor of this engine in such a sweet old truck, but he HATES ME now because this video made me want a truck like it! This is one of my favorite YouTube videos, and I watch it whenever I wanna hear that awesome Detroit wide-open throttle sound!

@streetwires01 Hey i planning on doing the same conversion as you did except I'm planning to replace the corvette Lt1 in my 84 Chevy Silverado with a Detroit Diesel or a Cummins, overall how much did you spend on this project?
@rivercrestcolts55 i Have dual 4'' stainless to go from the header back and big 4'' mufflers for it just have too many projects to finish before I can build it up. Gonna Put big stacks in the bed
@streetwires01 sweet dude my grandpa had a 69 359 Peterbilt with a 6v53 in it, he put over a million miles on it and blew it up and put a 6v71 in it, they sound fuckin awesome with straights btw!
@streetwires01 When I used to be a volunteer fireman we repowered an old Seagrave KB pump with a 6V-53T. We had the exhaust tapered from 4" out of the turbo's outlet to 6" then had an 8" tailpipe from the muffler on out. No doubt that gave the engine a lot more pep than it would have had.
@streetwires01 How much power does that truck have ? I'm 3/4 of the way into putting the same engine with an eaton fuller 7 speed into a 83 Chevy 3500 crew cab and was curious if you were happy with the power.
what it is is that the supercharger in the series on complete line of 2 or 3 stroke engines.. witch makes the compresion in the motor knock a little louder.. witch thats why the truck has no power stearing and makes it tuff to turn corners.. aslo the turbo puts out about 90 bk witch gives it about 5 extra horses.. dos every one get that?
@vaccumme The turbo creates more boost compressing the incoming air into the cylinders. The blower only boosts up to 6psi, therefore the turbo is used to force more air into the cylinders. More air allows for more Fuel which in turn increases power output. Also the blower has a bypass valve that opens around 5psi allowing the turbo to create more boost without putting pressure on the blower seals and reducing the load on the engine from the blower.
@streetwires01 I'm a little confused (suprise!) I thought that the Blower was used to scavange the exhaust out of the cylinders so that the next power stroke could take place. If this is true, then the Blower and Turbo woud not have anything to do with the power stroke? What am I missing with my assumption? V.
@vaccumme You are correct but in the same stroke it also fills the cylinders with the air for the power stroke the exhaust valves open at BDC and close after the exhaust is expelled, then the fresh air in the cylinder is compressed on the up stroke and ignites at TDC it is a 2 stroke so the intake and exhaust are on the same stroke.
@streetwires01 Thanks for the reply and the indepth info. Now I can see how a turbo would be an advantage. one last question: Can you compare the DD power
@vaccumme Simply this- the supercharger is not a supercharger. It's a blower.
It's not providing boost, thus it is not a supercharger.
That part, from that very engine (along with other detroits) has been modified in drag racing to supercharge those engines, but a blown detroit is considered normally aspirated.
Turbo charging provides boost, boost gives more power.
It's kind of like saying the Cummins is a 4 stroke, it takes in its own air, why turbocharge it?
@vaccumme a 2 stroke diesel has to have the supercharger in order to pull air into the engine on the intake stroke. It doesn't produce any boost. The turbo works like a turbo on any other engine, packing more air charge into each stroke.
Dude your truck is amazing, i'm kind of jealous!
