Devil May Cry 4 was my friends first devil may cry game and we had this disscusion for over an hour:

Him:Ok nero is my favorite out of everyone on this fucking game

Nero and Dante fight each other because Dante unsuspectingly interrupts the order's ceremony and kills their head leader along with some guardsmen. Nero see's this as an act of evil and goes after Dante. Nero is the new character because capcom wanted a fresh start to dmc to drag in new fans and because it was for next gen consoles.

Yeah, it's hard to admit but Dante's taunts aren't saying much in this game... he still has a cool voice though, but then so does Nero and his taunts are way better. In fact I would go as far as to say that Nero also looks cooler (i.e. his clothes) and has better combos. It seems Capcom went into overdrive trying to make Nero likable, poor Dante.
