I studied science at degree level everyday for four years. I have a good understanding of the scientific method. First principles are that science can't be proven like maths can. Quantum mechanics isn't proven, but it is has such a high probality of being true from experimentation that it is widely taken as fact.

The only way a theory can come close to - "proven to be correct" - is if there is no evidence to the contrary. This is the whole issue with global warming that those outside of the scientific community do not understand. The theory of quantum mechanics has many times more evidence supporting it than global warming and it is not considered to be a proven theory. The four basic forces in the universe (i.e. gravity, strong nuclear force etc...) are proven and thats about it.

I'm no scientist, but San Fransisco is quite famous for being geologically unstable, so it might not be the best place for Mr. Jones to be taking his measurements...

Also, yeah if that tree was so easy to pull down it indicates that it was once growing on dry land, and has since become water-logged in the roots causing them to decay. (Not a scientist, but a diploma in Horticulture taught me a thing or two about trees...)

If it was that close to the water that it fell over that would imply that the ground used to be dry enough for the tree to root.
