A pesar de que el Director de Orquesta se empreña en correr como un loco. Montserrat aguanta el chaparron, y canta como solo ella sabe cantar de una manera maravillosa.
One of the best Leonoras of all time. Up there with Milanov. I still think that Tebaldi's voice would have been ideal for the role. She has never sung this role on stage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For me she has never be enough for Verdiroles... this is not bad but something is not in the style of the music - she is singing Verdi like Donizetti.... But Ok... this is better than many other of her Verdiinterpretations... formally studiorecordings... with Domingo....
This opera should most definitely be sung in the bel canto style. And this aria is so similar to "Regnava nel silenzio" from LUCIA, wouldn't you say? I'm glad she sings it like Donizetti. :)
Because Verdi composed for a long time, he had several periods of differing styles. This piece comes directly out of Donizetti which is why it's appropriate for her. The Forza Leonora is a different story...
It doesn't get any better than this! I saw Caballe and Domingo in this opera in Philly. They were young, like here, and in their prime. Although she made no complete recording of this opera, she did the Saturday broadcast not long after I saw her, and that could show up on SIRIUS some time. Her pianissimo high C is really something.
Excellent singing from one of the best voices ever if not the best. At this point in her career she was vocally omnipotent. As time went by, I always thought that she tried to do too much and the results were not always top notch. At times, she gave me the impression she became a caricature of her former self. A great artist nonetheless.
Poor opera...Gone are those types of voices, Caballe, Tebaldi, Callas, Nilsson, etc. We have to be content with Fleming (ho-hum), Gheorghiu (snooze) and whatever else is thrown up there that CAN'T sing Verdi and Puccini
i agree, though i think both fleming and gheorghiu are capable* of it.
mostly, it's the fact that singers today are constantly told how the SINGING isn't as important anymore. that's the shame of it all. there are* great singers amongst us.
Glorious!! - Caballe is at the height of her considerable powers here and sings it like bel canto, as it should be. Shame about the hurried pace in the cabaletta though...
You can hear Caballe tries to slow it down. It's great to see Caballe doing Leonora! I've always wanted to hear her do this role. Thank you Onegin65 for this post!
O my God that is Heather Begg as Ines, very popular artist with The Australian Opera!!!she sung a lot with Dame Joan, great mezzo she was to become. Why no one ever recorded a full Trovatore with Caballe beats me.A yes the cabaletta far too fast but she can cope well with it
Begg is really underrated abroad. Thank goodness she got to play Marcellina in Jean-Pierre Ponelle's film of Le nozze di Figaro. She's great in that role. It's unfortunate her aria was cut.
Indeed, the lack of a studio Leonora from Caballe (not to mention the other Leonora, Desdemona, Donna Elvira, and Countess) is one of the great crimes of the recording industry.
EMI planned to record Caballe's Trovatore Leonora in he early 70's with Cappuccilli and Verrett conducted by Giulini but they never found a suitable Manrico.
Aww, too bad! That's pretty much a dream cast too. Thank you for the information. I guess. Now it just makes me sadder, knowing that I might have had a Trovatore with Caballe AND Verret.... :P
Not to increase your sadness but there were plans too, in the 70's, to record Caballe's Forza Leonora and Adriana with Carreras. In the late 70's, EMI aparently invited Caballé to record Odabella, possibly to Ghiaurov's Attila.
As I mentioned before, the Forza Leonora was another loss; I'm not familiar with Adriana aside from a few arias so I can't comment on that. You say they invited her to record Odabella? Did she refuse, then? That doesn't strike me as quite the right role for her.
bAdAbAdA13: it's not surprising they couldn't find a suitable Manrico. the only good one I've ever heard (out of about 50) was Franco Corelli. even Pavarotti sounded terrible trying to sing it.
i be monserrat appreciated heather sitting down. at six foot something she was a good companion for sutherland too. and a great actress. her face

on DVD by now.

This is a classic case of the conductor forgetting that opera is about the singing. The word "diva" truly fits Caballe!

I like the C# and short little run she does after it. it's contrasts well with the rest of the otherwise heavy performance. =)

I can't imagine why there's no complete Trovatore with Caballe either. Leonora was a wonderful fit for her vocally and temperamentally.
