Is this *the* Jane Alexander made famous by Tim Moore in his excellent book about Eurovision Nil Pointers?
What a stunning lady, I must say! Love the dress, love the shoes, love the hair! It's pure 80s with lots of class. I know this may sound like an oxymoron, but Jane proves here that it can be done. And she has a very good voice, too!
The song may not be the most instantly catchy one, but it's delievered in style. All in all, I think Miss Alexander should be proud of this!
@aufrechtgehn No, this song didn't make it as far as the ESC itself. It was beaten by 'Why Do I Always Get It Wrong' by Live Report that was then robbed into second place by a hideous entry from Yugoslavia in the last year that it would be entering as one nation.
@BluebirdintheSky: yeah, I know she didn't make it to the ESC. Tim Moore mentioned her because she was a personal friend of him - and the only close person ever performing in a SFE. I have to say that 'Why Do I Always Get It Wrong' was one of the worst British entries ever, IMHO. Not as gruesome as that... that... "song" from Yugoslavia that actually won that year. But it was Spain (Nina - Nacida para amar) which was robbed that year...
@aufrechtgehn Oh, good God, no. That was horrendous. A tuneless death march sung mostly flatly on the night by a woman with a horrible voice and who, on top of being less than pretty to begin with, had an awful tendency to gurn on the simplest of notes and plainest of lyrics. Just one of the many years that I had to sit with my Spanish family while they laughed at the ridiculous hopelessness of Spain's entry.
@BluebirdintheSky Funny how very different one can assess the very same performance. :) I think that Nina was more than pretty, had a wonderful voice and I was touched very deeply by her "gurning". I had no idea what she sung, I just sensed it must have been something very dramatic. And I love dramatic performances, that's why I'm a Eurovision fan. :)
Live Report, on the other hand, I simply found ugly. At least they had a very appropriate song title. But we agree on Yugoslavia, don't we? ;)
I am certain the song appeared soon after on an Elkie Brooks album. I actually liked this song at the time. But I was ever so young.
