Portnoy has one of, if not THE most impressive collection of rock drumming tracks ever recorded....a huge amount of material with lots of variety as well as impressive signatures. Richard Christy has a style with much less variety, although he has been heard in some great bands, playing the best drums each band ever had! They are both the best.

Then again I only really know Mike Manginis work with Steve Vai, and hes definitely great at what he does, I just haven't seen him in a more metal band setting which probably skews my judgment a bit.

Christy is way better than Portnoy. Just bcuz Portnoy went to Berkley & is more well known doesn't mean shit. I play drums & I've learned a ton of both drummers stuff & trust me, the shit Christy plays is much much harder & also fits the music better. Portnoy's whole band is just people showing off yet he still doesn't fit in some of the time. Portnoy's great to learn from but at a certain point you realize how overrated he is. Christy blows him out of the water

yea you're right, it shouldn't always be about that. I tend to get like that when it comes to something I think is overated. Like Nirvanna or Peyton Manning. Portnoys awesome and has been an influence on my style & I didn't realize how many people actually know Christy so I wanted to point out that I think what he plays is more difficult and unique but especially in this setting, it's not about that at all.

I just meant they show off by playing incredible stuff constantly but petrucci also crafts some good tunes and the same goes for myung. I just see them as the band that went to berklee & shows it but Mike definetly shows off in the most literal sense. they're an amazing band but Portnoys antics on stage can get lame sometimes.

@zzzzzz69 They do that because Dream Theater's writing since Octavarium has began to get stuck in a rut, he's just recycling the same beats over and over and over, and Dream Theater in general are starting to get predictable with their song structure. Ever since they joined Roadrunner, their writing is just so generic, it's like they're trying to be hard and brutal and aggressive after they had songs that were actually thought provoking because those songs didn't get them enough publicity.

Richard Christy was the drummer on the album The Sound of Perseverance, from the band Death, if you like technical thrash/death metal, check it out (of course the death metal elements are fewer, but the speed and heavyness is present throughout teh album, along with some kick-ass heavy metal tunes). For me it is one of the best METAL albums evere! (oh, and I almost forgot the Control Denied album also with Mr. Christy, Chuck Schuldiner, Steve DiGiorgio and Shanonn Hamm - that is closer to HM).
