  • Nice watching a ship I did the testing on :The MK 92 guidance system at Mac field LI NY

  • it would be so fun to be in a bathing suit inside the missle thing @ 1:06

  • This class of FFG is only good at anti submarine warfare and some limited surface to surface warfare. But this ship is awesome off the coast of Somalia with the 76mm gun some have a 40mm chain gun and a bunch of 50s cals. Anyway why send a cruiser when u can send this thing to do it better and cheaper.

  • @Nielsenkc Probably because a cruiser may be a little more intimidating? Just my guess. :D

  • @VocalIntuition true but pirates cant tell the difference between a cruiser and this thing anyway.

  • Ahh, the GARY. This was my first Command and I made this video while I was still an Ensign. My second tour was aboard an Aircraft Carrier, USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74). Can you imagine what a change in pace...and firepower? Some comparisons: Crew: FFG: 20 Off, 108 Crew CVN: 300 Off, 4,700 Crew Aircraft: FFG: 1-2 helos CVN: 85-90 fixed wing planes/helos Irony: FFG: Called Guided Missile Frigate, no Missiles CVN: Called Aircraft Carrier, has MANY Missiles (both Ship&Aircraft)

  • what weapons? The Navy neutered all of it's frigates. Smart move, take away the missiles

  • @amishmike1 Can't they just stick some box launchers on the FFG so that they can throw out some Harpoons should the need arise?

  • @dokaw They have a missile launcher with SM-1 and Harpoon, no box launcher needed.

  • The semi-official story is that the Mk13 launcher arm was removed from all US ships to provide parts for other countries using the system and because the SM-1 was at end of life. It didn't hurt the navy's case for the money to fund the LCS ships that the FFGs were no longer capable of slinging serious missiles - something the LCS ships cannot currently do despite some other nice features they offer for small ships. The last ten FFGs built have received Mk 38 mod 2 guns with nice optics.

  • ...in place of the MK13 launchers.. Still it might have been interesting to operate the FFGs in pairs/groups with one ship still equipped with the MK13 (and the last fire control updates i.e. Mk 92 Mod 6 CORT with SPS-49(V)5/SYS-2(V)2) and one with the new gun and perhaps SeaRAM. Bottom line is the navy doesn't want to throw more money into the FFGs for the limited lifespan remaining.

  • ur ship is a piece of shit compared to other FFG's the Australian ones have a guided missile turret on the front torpedo launchers on the side 50 cal machine guns along either side of the vessel 2 helicopters and multiple other weaponry units i dont no about other US FFG's but if there like this well your in a bit of trouble at war games time

  • @gofuck4 Everything that you just said was on the aussie ships is the same equipment that it came with when we (the US) sold it to them. I worked on all of that same equipment when I was in the Navy!.......Oh and you do know that the aussies buy our old ships right?

  • @KreigsMarine2 ahh no we don't buy ur old ships... maybe back in the 70's but not nowadays we have 10 new ships coming in in 2012-2014 and all are brand new and every ship australia has had we have had since new... and don't worry buddy my mum is the 2nd most senior female in the Australian millitary and my dad is Ex navy so i sorta no my shit aswell

  • The only old ships we have of the U.S are Kanimbla and manoora, the rest are bought from new (not sure bout tobruk though) Our FFG's have slightly more equipment since the FFG upgrade in the late 90's, americans have enough ships that they dont need to upgrade theres, you can have all the best equipment in the world but when push comes to shove, its going to be the crew that will determine who wins a battle, and us aussies, and the americans are both pretty switched on.

  • No Harpoon or SM1 firing? I fired an SM1 Missile while stationed on board the USS John A. Moore FFG-19. The ship now belongs to the Turkish Navy.

  • If I ever joined the Navy, I'd want to be on a Frigate...terrific ships.

  • I was in the Navy, stationed on a frigate, FFG-46 USS Rentz out of San Diego CA. Frigate life was better back before 2003. Before, they use to have missile launchers onboard. I was onboard for 3 different missile shoots. My division was responsible for all of the weapons sytems. If you want to know more about the weapons systems, feel free to ask me.

  • @KreigsMarine2 isnt that like illegal or some sort of breach of national security if you start telling ppl about weapon systems?

  • @xelvargx Actually there is very little about those weapons systems that I worked on that is still classified. By the time I got there and began my tenure, the only thing that was classified was the frequency of the radars and even that was only "confidential". Not even secret or top secret. And even that you can find on the internet!!!

  • AT 9:10 SOMEONE WILL CALL YOU OR TALK TO YOU ONLINE AND SAY I LOVE YOU OR ASK YOU OUT BUT HERES THE CATCH Send To 3 vid

  • The Australians add more weapons to their OHPs and we cut off the Mk.13 launchers.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  • Hey, I agree. Our FFG upgrade was a complete waste of money. But we didn't have a choice. We have a treaty with Indonesia, stating that we will not have anything larger that a frigate until 2011. So we needed to do something with our aging fleet until our AWD's come online.

  • Your AWD will be an awesome ship, the F100 is a great basis to use, and the addition of SM-6 will really give you a long range air defence capability.

Of course the Brits will still try and tell you that the Type 45 is a better air defence platform, but they are the only ones who will take that statement seriously, by comparison to the AWD it's a lousy design.

  • Any former USS Gary sailors, there is a USS Gary FFG-51 group on facebook....if you're interested come check it out and join. Would like to see more Gary shipmates sign-up

  • just got mk75 orders to the gary

  • good old FFG's.

I'm the Launcher Puke (GMM) on HMAS Darwin (FFG-44) at the moment. I'm doing the Mk41 course right now, but you can't beat the good old Mk13

  • you know whats better

  • whats better?

I would have loved to have been around in the days when the Mk 10 and Mk11's were around. they would have been amazing to work on.

  • I hated the Gary but it definitely gave me a new level of tolerance.

  • They should at least put a sea ram launcher where the Mk13 used to be at

  • I left about 5 days after they cut the Mk 13 off. Too bad they couldnt show some of that video.

  • Awesome video!

  • The USS Gary was the best and worst command for me. I hated it and loved it at the sametime.

    RIP OS2 Benny Cardone

  • You still on the ship.

  • No, I seperated at the end of 2007.
