Yeah, think about sports cars, then realize that a sports car will easily go faster than this airplane (such as it is). How sporty is that for a price tag of 140 big ones??? LOL
@usa1327 "Your" A5 can't go up to 10,000' either since it doesn't exist. YES, there's a prototype or two and from what I've seen, it looks pretty, but not a single PRODUCT has been built and in the hands of a buyer. There's been so much hype about the A5 that I'm beginning to wonder if they are even capable of producing it at all. I saw video of one being put together, but no assembly line and no completed aircraft ready for delivery.
Mountain lakes mean high altitude, and I think a Rotax will have some trouble at 10,000 feet. Add in some wind, warm temperatures, and you’re not going to do a lot of mountain flying in an Icon.
It would be a neat toy. It’s the fold-able wings that interest me. That would probably add another $20,000 to the price, I’m guessing. You don’t need a medical check to fly it, and I think only 20 hours of training.
In the price neighborhood for most factory-built Light Sport Aircraft. It has a Rotax, which means cruising at 5000 RPM. Nice with the amphibian feature, but if you land on a lake in Kalifornia, you’re going to get a big fine.
I did notice he said Caribbean and mountain lakes. He didn’t say a lake near home, There are reservoirs all over the Mojave desert. However, you can’t land on them, many you can’t put a boat in, and many are completely closed off to the public.
Betcha the Chinese are gonna copy it and make it for $50.000.00 screwing everybody else. Furthermore, like their Gov wants to have all those millions of little hungry mouths busy, they're planning to "help" (read 'subsidize") the Manufacturing, having people working on Fiber Glass without masks, sleeping at the factories and giving them free non 'luxury' accommodation, etc Mark my words...Nice plane, btw. The true American Spirit...
I wonder if using mass production techniques like those developed by fiberforge or the German methods that use carbon fiber sheets will half the cost. I think this aircraft would be fun but it could also play an importnat transportation role by connecting rural areas to the cities.
@rock3tcat sport pilots license. it REALLY limits you in what you can do. only 2 on board, under 10,000 feet, and you can't exceed 150 mph. those are the 3 big ones. a normal pilots license costs about 6-8k
First, I want to thank the producers of this video for conveying the spirit of flying as an exciting but calming experience. ICON has done an amazing job of producing a sexy, accessible, and relatively affordable means of flying. Flying is in my blood and I hope to experience this aircraft for myself.
@HunsV: These "struts" are basically just a propeller guard, may also add some strength to structure.
Firstly, the parachute system shouldn't be 'optional', it's a safety feature.
-
The simplicity/opportunity of flight is a nice idea, but the figures of 4-$5,000 for a license and such is what's going to have to dissolve for a true change to occur.
For now, if you're going to start something in aviation, you've got to either be a millionaire or connected to some serious industry partners. The question is 'How do we make this general' ?
-
And if Apple made a lot of things, we'd be better off.
The parachute system is optional because the aircraft company as well as any other pilot, as do I, know that airplanes do not and cannot simply fall out of the sky but the chute system is added for customer comfort. I will tell you now I am not a millionaire but I am a pilot you do not have to be a millionaire to be able to afford this plane or a license. A regular pilot license cost about 10k so this is a very cheap deal. Also you contradicted yourself, if Apple made airplanes they'd be pricey.
Look guys! Its only $139,000

@deathbyitaliano About the same if not cheaper than a sports car, and being that its a sports plane, thats not bad at all.

This guy has lots guts to develop an aircraft like this
plain minded people just dont understand or know how difficult to get one developed and certified.
I applaud his guts a modern day aviation pioneer thinking outside the box
this is the type of people we desperately need in the USA

Some kind of fancy prop guards

if apple made airplanes i think they would look something like this :-)
great plane for Florida
I'd opt for the chute over autofolding even though it's not much good at low altitude oopsies/oh-sh**s
