I would say go for it, I have never regreted purchasing my set up. Hours of enjoyment.

All these gears seem to have been broached with keyways.

How was this done on a sherline?

A broach kit and arbor press. they could have been done on the sherline but it is a lot of work.

I have only seen broaching on a large machine, and want to do it at home.
