What I did like was more of the "what-ifs" that this had - loved the showdown between Ralph and Luke over Dane, Ralph's paternal fighting for Dane ... showing that on some level deep down he was attached already to his son. Liked the idea he didn't leave Meggie for 20 years, that they'd reached *some* peace when he left. AD did okay, loved RC. Liked Ralph's crisis of faith, and that it's Meggie who tells him he can't give up the church, despite it being HER dream. Overall, okay film.
this movie was horrible and didn't make any sense if you saw the original???? Rachael Ward knew better than to be involved in this and as I already said, RC needed the money...... :0
I agree with below this film if watched without watching the original isnt bad but if like me you loved the original wel nuff said. replacing rw was a bad idea but if they was gonna go that route they should have gotten lesley anne down to do it and well no jean simmons richard c was brilliant in this as well having said that it didnt work for me.
At least Amanda Donohoe could do a halfway credible accent - Rachel Ward didn't even try. I always found it amusing that Meggie was supposedly born in New Zealand to an Irish family and raised in Australia - yet she has an American accent as a child and an English accent as an adult. Personally, I thought Amanda Donohoe was one of the redeeming features of "The Missing Years", certainly she portrayed Meggie with more backbone than Ward did anyway.
Wow I thought they had divorced since she left him after her tryst with Ralph. You're right, Meggie almost died giving birth to Justine, and Luke was nowhere around.
I totally agree. If you have watch the original Thornbirds you would know that Meggie and Ralph didn't see each other for 20 years after Matlock Island. Also, neither Dane nor Justine ever met their father. Tooo weird, it's like the person who did the script writing never saw the original Thornbirds. Also agree, there is no replacing Rachel Ward.
As a stand-alone film, this wouldn't be bad, but it loses major points for being COMPLETELY inconsistent with the original movie. Not just in plot, but everything--Fee and Meggie have a decent relationship, when they never did before, etc.
The thing is, although I liked the novel and the original mini-series, I thought that both of them were considerably flawed works, and neither were really deserving of the "classic" status bestowed upon them - hence, I wasn't too perturbed that "The Missing Years" was a departure from both the novel and the original mini-series. I look upon it as a "what if" scenario, and I think if you look at it with that mindset there is much to enjoy. Just don't compare it to the novel or first series.
i loved the original i never saw the missing years everyone keeps telling me its rubbish why did they make it. and wouldnt raplh+ meggie have mentioned these missing years in the part where they met up 20 years later if it had really happened
You know, I felt that Amanda Donohoe was actually one of the redeeming features of "The Missing Years" - as an Australian, I always found Rachel Ward's accent to be unbelievable and I felt she played Meggie too meekly at times.... I thought that Donohoe's accent was much more convincing and generally she played Meggie with much more backbone.... also, I liked that "The Missing Years" had more Australian actors in the cast, rather than Yanks not even trying to do the right accent.
The film is OK.

Amanda Donohoe was superb in this sequel. She is a great actress and played the part of 'Meggie' brilliantly. I love her, she's wonderful.

Amanda Donohoe (sp) was terrible. She was NOT Meggie. This should never have been made.

I really wish they hadn't come out with the Missing Years.
The original was good and enough.
And Rachel Ward is awesome and irreplaceable.
