Any updates to this? It is because the Chinese media is still telling the rest of the world that China is growing in prosperity and GDP. Yet they are building ghost cities.
@bomberfun1 Go live in India instead, enjoy all the religious freedom (i.e. freedom to kill off who u think as heretics) and liberty (freedom to drink from, piss and shit into the holy river). Get some spider man skills too, becos u need it to take those 'roof top seats', 'ceiling seats' when u board a train there.
@MrLilort I assume you are in a PhD program. The difference is that 800 yuan might be enough to survive in China, but 465$ will land you in a homeless environment in some part of the US.
..hmm i go to college, and where i live ,465 is nothing. even the money, I spend on food is alot more then 465 dollars, but hey its always good to have a bit in pocket.
The truth is some people no enough ability for find a good job, so got zero work experience and unstopping finding jobs. Stop too much complain ur life. This is same for every trackers
I graduated from the Sichuan University in 07, it's exciting to see my old campus and hometown in the documentary! Exactly like what's bee shown, graduates all have the last dinner at some Sichuan Hot Pot restaurant, having lots of beer and then cried on each other's shoulder. Living in China is difficult, considering that any non-labour related product ( e.g. retail consumer product) costs the same as in the States when the salary is like only 10%!
Its not just china but the whole world has the same issue in general. Simply today we produce more graduate than there his jobs.
So Supply exceed demand so employers can be picky on their candidates. They look for those who willing to work cheap, long hours, and have outstanding results.
Most graduate are in the whimps of their employer as they have little demanding power and if they disagree with their employer terms. They simply fire you and find a dozen of applicant to replace the person.
on 13:13, I find that Ms Li graduated on 2004, so this film should be shot on that time. 7 year have passed by, I hope Ms Li and Mr. Feng are enjoying a good life now.
OMG did you see the salary of the reporter? It is linked to her performance for that month. Americans who COMPLAIN about working conditions in USA should watch this and reflect on themselves.
When was this video made? you can't even hire a baby sitter now for 800 yuan. Base salary for anything starts @ 1500¥ at least, and you have provide room and board. (if you don't, as in baby sitter case. you have cover a part of rent and transport.) I know become my aunt just went though that, 1200¥ salary plus 500¥ rent+transport for the sitter. That's in a 3rd (4th?) tier city in one of the interior provinces.
the two main people in this story is working as a teacher and a newspaper editor, those are probably the shittiest jobs to get in America so why would it be easy in China
I'm not rich but I'm not being "burdened with the debt of a university education" here in America. Saying American life sucks is not going to make life in China any better, haha :) America is heaven compared what these people seem to be going through. Earning "800 Yuan" a day is about "120 USD", right? That's not a wealthy persons salary here in the US, not even a middle class salary, it's an average salary for any 16 year old kid working in a restaurant..
@SmokeyCough it's RMB 800 Yuan per month, please note that as the same time, a Louis Vuitton hand bag costs RMB10 000 in China or a cup of Häagen-Dazs ice-cream costs RMB 25 Yuan and a G-star shirt cost around RMB 800. Most young people are just frustrated. But to be honest, the average salary has double now since 04 when the doc was filmed but almost every kind of commercial goods cost same price in China than in the States due to the heavy tax from Chinese government.
China change day by day. 15 years ,10 years,5 years ago make big different. this video may be 5 years old.now you have to pay 3,000 yuen to hire a house keeper in the big city.
I am a Chinese student pursuing my master degree in the US now. Before I came to the US, I worked in a state-owned company and earn a limited salary. This documentary is old and the salary in it is out of date, but it does make sense to some degree. Job markets across the world is shit now. Best blessing to all graduates in China and America.
Thousands of miles away people are experiencing the same problems!
A degree is meaningless unless it helps you find a way to be productive in the economy. You could give everyone in the world a medical degree but if we don't need any more doctors then they would be unemployed.
It was a sad documentary, I know that people here in America and all over the world can really relate to these students who question the value of their degree and the debt it's burdened them with. How sad.
These are two true but common stories in China nowadays. There are too many graduates every year, but the job market is so severe that many of them need to suffer a lot in the beginning. I wish they could have a better life and I believe they will.

I just graduated in California with a Mathematics degree and I can't find a teaching job because they cut education funding to increase the longevity of our war in Afghanistan, I share solidarity with those Chinese.
@zasabiibasaz If you have a mathematics degree, there are other positions you can try besides teaching (unless that's what you really want). A math degree is not that common.
No it’s not god, just industrialist urge for their children to become successful, don't attribute people virtues to a magical all knowing daddy in the sky. See here religion plays no part in society and no shekels or burden would hamper people’s studies...thus becoming more successful that those religious countries Unlike Islam and Christianity.

I visited top universities in China and they cant compare to to even mediocre colleges here. No amount of "blessing" can overcome their lack of opportunity for a good education
