  • I would do my paperroute listening to this song on 8tack player attached to my bike and man it was so cool to go down a LA street and listen to Mannfred Mann tune and thing soon we can listen to music on things not so big as an 8 track player.... but it was so cool back in those days

  • This song is nothing, without these harmonies. Thanks to Manfred Mann for salvaging what would otherwise be another tragic Springsteen 'B' side.

  • Real music ,Real men ! The best music forever ! and will never be found agin! .....

  • my first concert

  • Best cover song ever.

  • @KREEPNASTY1 Yeah, we all know it is a Springsteen cover. Thank god. Cause Bruce can't sing it for shit.

  • its only taken me 36 years to find out that line thats for putting me right lmao

  • Tony Blackburn was always a bloody egghead, BUT great clip otherwise,I think I'll subscribe, thanks for posting quality clips cheers from Canada!

  • boobs --------------------------------->

  • This Song Will Live On For Ever. :)

  • Awsum 2 kool

  • GOOD OL'E DAYS. TIME CHANGED THOUGH

  • BLOW!!!!!

  • Great song but I really hate when lip sync!

Top Of The Pops Sucks when compared to Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special, which required the performers to perform, not just pretent.

  • If they are why pull out all the keyboards not just one??

  • @promustangman just noticed no cords from Guitars or keyboards LOL!!!

  • I totally got this song once, but i didn't write it down so still remains a mystery.

  • Not everyone mimed on TOTP ... I remember a lot of bands that didn't. Focus being one, The Runaways being another, and Climax Blues Band as well ... there were many that really played, but for some strange reason they made some bands mime. It's too bad. I have heard them do this live and it was phenomenal ... Manny is one of the most talented keyboardists to this day, and Chris Thompson is a powerhouse.

  • @mkanix666 love the keyboard in this song:)

  • Close LIP_SINC....but it's it's recorded folks!!

  • To all the sooks complaining about today's terrible music... there has always been terrible music, its just that you only remember the stuff you loved! 15 years from now today's kids will be saying the same thing :-)

  • you know how long it took me to figure out that line " revved up like a deuce'?.... forever...lol.

    Got it now.

    Thanks for the upload.

  • @barbergreg LOL Yeah I would say 95% of ppl who hear this song (myself included) think he's saying "wrapped up like a douche" instead of "revved up like a deuce". It's no wonder though. His revved sounds like wrapped & he adds a very pronounced "shh" sound at the end of deuce. I still like douche better. Haha!

  • @NijhtOwl That"s exactly what I thought he was saying for year"s,I had to find the lyric"s before I knew what he was actually saying, now that I know the real word"s I still sing the douche part...lol,peace.

  • @NijhtOwl

I always wondered what the hell that lyric was. Thanks for claryfing it.

  • My favourite band of all time

  • God, you forget people in the past actually had to have good voices and musical talent to do this shit for a living. I NEVER would have guessed this was a live recording.

  • @moshe88 You're 100 percent right, unfortunately they're miming - everyone used to mime on top of the pops

  • Pre AIDS COKE FUN era!!!!!!!

  • silicone sister

  • michael mann

  • this is the 70's!! lol

  • Playback, not even a good one.

  • god this sucks. I LOVE the song but this chopped up lip-synced frankenstein is horrible. He says "asked me if I needed a ride" then follows with "let goliath be crushed to the ground" WTF? whoever chopped this for the show should have been chopped. HAHAHA i love MM's voice. one of the best ones in rock/pop imo.

  • @TruthSurge Don't WATCH!!

  • @onedorf how could I have known in advance before watching it? dumb fuck.

  • @TruthSurge Listen here you little pig. You need to shut your nasty, filthy mouth, SCUMBAG!!

  • @onedorf oh, wow. he called me names. I'm going to run home to mommie!

  • YEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Blinded by the light,

    revved up like a deuce,

another runner in the night LOL in case anyone ever needed to know

  • ONE WORD CLASSIC.

  • lip synced all to hell

  • Tony Blackburn's voice hasn't changed in over 40 years. Incredible.

  • was the singer in ram jam

  • @cloudbuster66 I think the singers name is Chris Thompson from New Zealand.

  • So 70's nothing more. Timeless

  • the f1 sent me here

  • I saw totps the same date on bbc4 last night and it was different layout and they were in a different position and clothes too and it was Jimmy Saville introduced it not Tony Blackburn that week.

  • In 1976 that joke was new.

  • Guy on the keys looks exactly like John Lennon

  • Tony Blackburn makes me sick.

  • One of Springsteen's best.

  • @beatlelover111 good to see there's someone else who knows the history...wish i could find The Boss doing it though

  • @beatlelover111 Very true, but it took Manfred Mann to make it live

  • Yeah I love so much different music and I was a mod revivla girl, new wave punk, madchester britpop 90s and I like rock too. This si one song that takes me back and I was never realyl into this band then but when you hear ti now it just blows you away! Thanks for posting great stuff :) x

  • looks like its lip synced. too much like the studio recording. their movements are too smooth

  • What a bunch of crap. One of the best songs ever with 4 minutes chopped off. That is just wrong.

  • Is the singer the same Chris Thompson who sings on Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds'.

  • There hippies

  • I agree with louluvscats, great song.

My favourite track though is "bouillabaisse" off the album "Watch". I believe it was the "B" side of Davy's On The Road Again.

  • 1 person is a douche

  • .34 forgets lyrics

  • Fucking heabng riff tank you nyrainbow4 <3 u man /she love bass riff will steal this too my song whriteing

  • Very obviouisly miming as was the rule on TOTP at the time , but an good vid non the less.

  • this is about hookers eh!?

  • to all you youths this is how music should sound,

  • @whitedust696 Fuck you

  • @whitedust696 u r sooooooo right...we don't have music now, we got crappy noise.

  • Somebody said "I should go to work on an egg?"

  • Tony Blackburn, a congenital berk of the highest order. What an annoying start to a great clip.

  • @flaxonx3 i so agree!

  • Yep a good track , remember this well , stood out at the time even though i was only a nipper, stood test of time.

  • The Boss wrote it, Manfreds made it a huge hit..

  • F.Y.I YOU F_CKING DUMB-CUNTS!!! THE EPIC LEAD SINGER OF MMEB IS 'CHRIS THOMPSON...' AND HE IS A F_CKING KIWI (NEW-ZEALANDER)<--- [AMAZINGLY NOT MANT PPL KNOW THIS!!!] WHO JOINED MMEB & LATER LEFT TO WRITE & PERFORM WITH MANY OTHER BANDS + ARTISTS! HOW DO I KNOW?...HE'S MY UNCLE...SO SUCK MY ONE-EYED MONSTER.

  • Ah Tony Blackburn's legendary 'humour', it never got any better. The song is, of course, originally from Springsteen, from his debut album, Greetings from Ashbury Park.

@xylrxylr - Manfred is not British, he is South African.

The lip-synching was demanded by the BBC and, I believe, the record companies, they wanted the music on the show to sound just like it did on the records, so they played the records.

  • This song is very prescient. There are silicone sisters all over the place nowadays, but not so back in the 70s! LOL LOL

  • It's "Revved up like a deuce another runner in the night" A lot of people make that mistake, its only because of his voice. He's British. Plus I think he's lip singing in this video.

  • @xylrxylr My god, if you want to figure the lyrics BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN wrote it and recorded it first. It's around here or there .

  • i still can't figure out what 'wrapped up like a douche'n of a runner in the night'' means...call me a dummy, but someone out there tell me.

  • I always loved this tune - btw Tony Blackbum blocked me on Twitter I think I called him a creep (too much wine)

  • Know where I would have shoved that egg .....

  • Bruce's Only #1 hit.

  • screwed up edit at 1:36. Guess they couldn't go the full 7 minutes. makes the pantomime/lip sync even more obvious.

  • class tune :):)

  • This sounds like they are using actual instruments while playing to a recorded track & possibly lip syncing. I have had the 45 RPM record before & it sounds just like this. Back in those days , in a lot of shows on TV , they ( music groups / singers ) lip synced all their music to previously recorded tracks. I think , if anything else , the instruments at hand are just props. I don't think they are really playing their instruments at all. It sounds too perfectly performed to be a live show.

  • @robbrichter2010 Your just finding this out? All bands do that. I went to a ZZ top concert Aug. 1, 2010 and they were really singing, but the instruments were pre-recorded. All bands are pretty much fake. They use some type of edit device mixer or whatever you call it to make the sound of their instruments. Even though it was probably pre-recorded its still better than all of that new age shit music people listen to nowdays!!!

  • @thejakeludwig Actually it was "Top of the Pops" that forced artists to edit the tunes even more than they already were -- for time alotments.

  • @robbrichter2010 Actually the 45 rpm has "Blinded By The Light" at 3:47, which means at 3:13 this performance was an even more severe edit of their version of the tune. (I still have the 45 rpm).

  • Happier Days

  • Nice song...the lead singer has an awesome voice too.

  • This was the first ever record I bought!

  • @sirtinycreep DAM YOU OLD but good tastes at least :P

  • Such an Awesome song that transports me back to 76,and its great to see it in excellent quality on YT! Really love this band, and probably the best out of the few hits the Earth band achieved. Thanks for post, been looking forward to seeing this! P.S.Love Tony Blackburn's Egg, and his Duck costume, typically humourous for the time! Nice post!! Benja :-)

  • Go-Kart Mozart ... of course an inspiration much later for the great Lawrence. All this band's hits (all three of them) have a certain atmosphere to them, even if they're objectively not all that great.
