  • Well I was planning to sleep earlier than I usually did tonight. Until I got to 1:49.

Now I wonder if I'll sleep at all.

  • Is it strange how similar Neil Gaiman and Alan Rickman are? Am I the only one who sees that?

  • i wasnt scared of this at all, what does that make me?

  • @03reayc A kompounophiliac.

  • I LOVE BUTTONS!

  • YOU DID THIS TO ME, NEIL. YOU MADE ME A KOUMPOUNOPHOBE.

  • The poetic darkness behind this comical makes me happy. I Love you Neil! :)

  • I think he just made everyone who watched this video afraid of buttons. :-(

  • Freaky, Freaky, FREAKY!

When he slit off the buttons and the mouth of the doll, I had distinct shivers up my spine. Now I don't even want to sleep because I know I'll have nightmares about buttons.

  • @HinakoNamikaze That's from the movie, Coraline. He wrote it.

  • OKAY OKAY I GET IT!!!

  • Dude he looks pretty freaky with the button eyed smile

  • Thumbs up if you thought the heart beating at the end was yours at first.

  • Somebody strap this man for a lobotomy, please...

  • @kkundlas786 WHAT? And lose all of his creative genius? Never! XD

  • i have koumpounophobia lol like i dont crae about ppl wearing them or seeing them i just cant wear something with buttons or touch them lol this man is creepy tho

  • @iDragongirlet Same here and if I touch a button I have to wash my hands multiple times and I feel nauseated for the rest of the day. I also can't let anyone wearing buttons hug me. That would not end well.

  • buttons are okay. except for eyes. on people.

  • All I have to say is thank god for zippers.

  • Koumpounophobia is a real word. In greek "koumpi" (κουμπί) means button, and "phobia" (φόβος) means fear.

I didn't know that there were people who were scared of buttons... but to be honest if I had watched "Coraline" when I was about 5, I know I would be scared for a long time...

Anyway, I love Coraline, and I'm gonna read the book as well! :) x

  • @Mikayla13able Gaiman's not trying to make fun out of you. On the contrary, he wants other people to share your fear. You do realize that he's talking ironically, don't you?

  • 0:53 I cringed so much it made me want to throw up. Is this common?

  • @Mikayla13able you dont get it

  • Ah, Neil Gaiman. So scary but so awesome. Like Steven Moffat.

  • Lalaloopsy

  • I love this man so much. He's one of my role models. Not because of the button thing, I mean, because he's written so many stories in so many different formats, and that's cool. ^^" Button thing is pretty awesome, though.

  • @Mikayla13able Then it's not a phobia it's an aversion.

  • Best ad for this movie. i love it!

  • i remeber after watching this movie i was terrified of dolls with button eyes they scare me

  • @Mikayla13able I don´t see it that way. He wasn´t trying to make fun of koumpounophobic people, he was just saying that it is not very common (which is true)

Besides, the whole point of this video was for a promotion of Coraline, so he just wanted to make a little joke saying, "this movie will make you have a very good reason to fear buttons" :)

  • @Mikayla13able I know what you mean :p If some people are wearing buttons I can't stand looking at them >.< And if I go into a store with buttons I don't want to go near them cus'.. they are disgusting and smell xD

  • I think I have Koumpounophobia now...

  • What is he doing in my falafel?

  • Neil is best troll.

  • Coraline is some freaky shit.

  • HOLLY CRAP... I DO have Koumpounophobia from the time I was born.. and I could not make it to the minute 0:52

  • that sinister smile with the buttons for eyes lol good job with an intro to the movie, neil

  • Yeah... I am now a Koumpounophobe...

  • me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like me no like ------ I'm the eleventh person to dislike this. I will never, ever see Coraline too! It's NOT irrational, it's who I am. I'm not changing for anyone(the exception of sexy girls), specially not for someone who calls it irrational. nuff said.

  • @Irrashaimase1 Do you want a medal or something? We don't care if you dislike this video or not or whether you are going to see the movie or not. You are just missing out. Also, your grammar and punctuation is atrocious.

  • @Miistification Trolololol you're telling me I have bad punctuation and grammar when I put something like 20 'me no like', no shit there Sherlock. And I really don't think I am missing out on anything, whoever talks about how great Coroline is? OF COURSE I WANT A MEDAL!!! who wouldn't want a medal? that's like not wanting candy. Plus I have every right to push dislike, I'm obviously affected by Koumpounophobia. Trololo away and I shall show you my ass (__!__)

  • @Irrashaimase1 Wow, seriously? What are you, six? Nice all caps by the way, do they make you feel more important? Also, the reason why I'm calling you out is because I can't stand people like you. They say they dislike something even though they have never tried/read/watched it or have given it a chance. Now, don't get me wrong, you can dislike something if you don't like it, but at least watch something before you judge it. P.S. U mad bro?

  • @Miistification Funny how you judge me on my age when the movie we are discussing was primarily aimed for children. What are you old and bitter? A pedobear, ew! And I know I don't like the movie because of the obvious phobia that's in question. Seriously, google it and read people's story of how bad it can be BEFORE you judge me. Also, EVERYONE says they hate something before they tried it. Murder, butt-sex, fighting a war, so don't be a hypocrite. Come at me BRO! CAPS INCLUDED.

  • @Irrashaimase1 you cant tell that you are being trolled can you

  • @FreezeXFlame No I know. But I love trolls. They are fun to mess around with.

  • @Irrashaimase1 The movie was actually aimed at teens. The age group ranged from 12 to whatever. I believe you can like something no matter what age you are. You must lead a boring life if what dictates what you can and can't like simply by age. And the movie wasn't about Koumpounophobia at all. And whoever said I was old and bitter? I'm 16, dickface. You just seem to be throwing around insults such as 'pedobear' in a half assed attempt to troll. Look at who's reacting. You seem to be.

  • @Miistification The movie wasn't aimed for teens. If it was it would been rated PG-13. It's PG. If it really was ranged from '12 to whatever' that would be PG-13. But yes you can go see it if you like. I never said you had to be a age. The movie wasn't about Koumpounophobia, never said it was. Don't know where you got that from. But, it does affect people with Koumpounophobia, obviously. You have insulted me more than I have to you. You don't make much sense boy. You're way more of a troll.

  • o.0 im scared

  • Well, buttons. I'm not afraid of buttons, Neil.

I'm afraid of buttons in the place of eyes. Eyes are windows to the soul, remember? :O

    I love this movie. :)

  • ahhhhhhhhhhh this is mean!!!!

  • 10 people got plausible reason to fear button after watching this. I understand them.

  • I was fine.

    Until he smiled.

  • I can't help but say that while he is a great writer (not going to say something like he's the greatest, he's a genius, or anything like that as it's all up to one's opinion) he is definitely creepy. I still can't figure out how one can think buttons for eyes on dolls are cute, that just looks scary, the movie and book of Coraline draw my case in point.

  • oh my gosh that was awesome. I hate how everyone thinks that Tim Burton directed the nightmare before Christmas and coraline. It was actually Henry Selick. Tim Burton just wrote the poem for NBC and produced the two movies. Tim Burton is an amazing guy and my role model but I thought I should just point that out. Also I think it would be kind of hard to direct puppets:)

  • @TheLeaf56 I think people think Tim Burton directed Nightmare Before Christmas because his name is on it, now how they think he directed Coraline I have know clue.

  • @ShadowPhoenixKC @TheLeaf56 Probably because the style (both genre and art style) is relatively similar.

  • I think I've just developed koumpounophobia...

  • 1:46 OMG ITS THE OTHER NEIL!!

  • i used to chew on buttons when i was little. Guess who has braces?

  • Neil Gaiman, you JACKASS.

  • what the hell....ths guys a creep....i was all like ??? at the end

  • @Ljeaniez Nope he`s just a genius and you`re too normal;)

  • I love the way he says "For it to be attatched to something," before pausing and quickly adding "Like a coat!"

  • Neil...You bastard.

Ah well. I didn't wanna sleep tonight anyway.

  • Me: Pulls a button out of my pocket

    Coraline: *faints*

    Me: You have koumpounophobia! XD

  • My third grade teacher read Coraline to us. I do love buttons, though.

  • Thumbs up if you can see the picture of Death and Dream of The Endless from the "Sandman Chronicles" in the background! :D

  • How is this scary, exactly?

  • I'm gonna vomit. I got that phobia

  • @pollydaa it's funny you say that cause I have emetaphobia, fear of vomit.

  • That is wonderful. Honestly I like Coraline a lot but has anyone ever read his comic books? Sandman is a GORGEOUS comic series he did with DC and it's full of poetry and eerily beautiful imagery.

  • @SubakuNoRin Im gonna read that now becaue of you xD <3 I love Neil Gaiman.

  • Neil Gaiman purpose in life is to scare you with unassuming and mundane things. I'm afraid of buttons now.

  • That was awesome.

  • 1:44 Omg It's Creepier and CREEPIER!

  • I'm sure Coraline has Koumpounophobia after her encounter with the beldam.

  • CREEEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 His smile at the end is almost terrifying. I'm not a big fan of his writing, but he did a good job preforming here, and the book Coraline was pretty good--not really scary, though....

  • What the fuck i almost puke myself, i have koumpounophobia, and i can live with that.

  • his British accent made it so much more creepier

  • I have koumpunophobia. This video nearly made me puke

  • @97kewj me too, it’s not even scary, it’s just sick!

  • A while after seeing Coraline, they started showing commercials for these dolls with button eyes called Lala-loopsy dolls. I couldn't help thinking that this was a grave error in marketing on their part.

  • D: Ahhhh....

  • I'd like this but I can't bring myself to press the you-know-what.

  • ahahahah i love this guy

  • i think i have koumpounophobic phobia, because im digusted when i see one, and im not afraid, i always wear shirts with no buttons xD, ..(blech)

  • I don't care IF he's trying to give me an irrational feat of buttons, I am in love with this man. His voice is both haunting and alluring. Just love him!!!!

  • SHIT. MY BUTTON COLLECTION IS ACROSS THE ROOM FROM ME RIGHT NOW.

  • at 1:51 i am officially a koumpounophobic

  • FUCK

  • *Cough cough* Buttons aren't scary at all! *Scoots pile of handmade toys with buttons for eyes behind him*

    *Innocent whistling*

What? ...Was I supposed to leave them eyeless?

  • in the movie "the number 23" he sees the number 23 everywhere... now i see buttons everywhere

  • Neil you are a sick man. I love you. XD

  • ITS THE BUTTON FEAR FEVER

    RUN AWAY

  • creepy.

  • i can't watch it, i have that fobia.

  • They're buttons, there's nothing sinister about them, there's nothing wrong or bad or evil or harmful or immoral that can be done with them that can't be done with something else.

    They're harmless.

Maybe if I keep telling myself that I'll believe it.

  • So, now that we all have koumpounophobia... lol.

  • Scarry! Indeed.

  • Neil Gaimen is My Man-Crush...

  • no, not scary, sexy

  • Why does this guy remind me of Sutter Cane?

  • Gaiman? Who wants to bet he was teased as a kid?

  • @malakaki111 probably not as much as Dick Armey.

  • omg that was so creepy at the end when he put the buttons on and smiled......

  • Neil Gaiman is a genius when it comes to horror.

  • You're kidding right? Scared of this video? HA ! what a bunch of whimps! ha

  • why did I watch this in the middle of the night...

  • I love his accent, I can listen him for ages:)

Anyway, I have a lot irrational phobics but why would you scared of buttons? Well... Why was people scared of before Coraline?

  • Ewwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!! Any thoughts that I might not be a koumpounophobe have gone straight out the window!! Bllleugh!

  • @ 1:51

    It's the Other Neil Gaiman!

  • this reminds me of the Goosebumps television program. The atmosphere is similar

  • o.o Creepy!

  • anyone else distracted by this guy's incredibly sexy voice?

  • lol, koumpounophobia comes from the greek words" koumpi" which means button and "phobia" which mean fear.

  • that scream you heard... yes it was me!

  • I know someone without kompouphobia who still dosent use buttons, Todd Mcfarlane. Gaiman gave him lawsuit phobia, so If he uses buttons, gaiman ill sue his ass

  • He makes buttons more scary than the book did

  • Okay, all your comments led this on to be worse than it really is. This isn't that bad.

  • Welp, time to go rip all the buttons off my clothing.

    Thanks, Neil. Thanks a lot.

  • Now that i have watched this video, I will become Koumpounophobia.

  • Does anyone else think Neil Gaiman sounds uncannily like Tom Baker? (Fourth Doctor)

  • Coralinwe!! have read the book as a child, still rember it really one of those greter books;3

It was mysterious and a little scary i remember^^

  • 1:26 .....I'm scared of dolls.....no, seriously, I'm slightly pedophobic. I can't stand certain ones like porcelain dolls. Dunno about button eyed dolls though...haven't seen one :P

  • @TwistedChyld Me too!!!

  • Before this video I hadn't the slightest fear, not even after watching Coraline for the 100th time! No no... what gave me the fear of buttons? This, 1:42 to 1:53. Thank you Neil Gaiman, not only for being one of the best author's who put their pen to paper and created a master piece, but for giving me koumpounophobia.

  • Love how the strings started up at the end. Also, a piece of *bone*? Guess I'm too used to the plastic/metal/wood buttons.

  • MOM! Can you send me to the doctor, because I think i have.......... Koumpounophobia!

  • On top of everything else, this video is made awesome by the sheer black billowiness of his jacket :)

  • Not very common, you say? It soon will be. *Shudder.*

  • Literally my only thought during watching this: "why are you dropping buttons on the floor?! WHYYYY??!" XC

  • @MetophoricalMushroom Bcuz hes Neil Gaiman, you cant get logic from him lol

  • I clicked this because I didn't know what the title ment xD

  • i think i have koumpounophobia now...

  • I was fine until the eye scream at 1:19 D: Plus claymation has always given me a case of the uncanny valleys

  • @casper9013 Fresh here from TV Tropes, huh? :3

  • @girlgenius17 Well it is awfully convenient to have terms for those kinds of things :)

  • @casper9013 not claymation, its actually tiny little dolls.

  • YOU gave me koumpounophobia!! MENTALLY SCARRING, GAIMAN!!!

  • IT'S PERFECTLY RATIONAL! YOU MADE IT SO!

  • @JediPirateWitch Totally!!!

  • for about a week after watching this movie, i had a bit of Koumpounophobia...lol sad part about it, is that it's totally true...

  • I feel very sorry for those people who have koumpounophobia and watched this movie or just this video. Although I'll admit, he scared the bejeezus out of me when I watched this the first time around.

  • I guess I'm a koumpounophile than?

  • before you watch the movie, "Who could be afraid of buttons?" after you watch the movie, "I'll never wear an overcoat again."

  • OMFG!!!

  • 9 people are going to be visited by their other mothers.

  • Interesting.

One time, I was reading Coraline at home. I finished the book and began to shiver, because before I was too distracted to realize I was cold. As I was putting on a sweater, I felt something in the pocket. I reached in and pulled out...a pair of buttons.

  • @grezledragon O_O Okay, this is creepier. I was playing my gameboy, then we went to the library and i checked out Coraline. I read it, note, all of the pages had nothing in them. Then, I finished, a key fell out. then i looked to my right. I saw a door I had NEVER seen before. Then i threw the key in my toilet, and flushed.

    Im smart i iz.

  • @Windwakerzelda99 turns out it was your front door key. oops :)

  • @Windwakerzelda99 WOW! Good thing you threw the key in the toilet and flushed it or else maybe you would have had (::) (::) on your eyes sewed by the Beldam!

  • How small was that door?

  • @antaloliver It was about the size of a cupboard.

  • lol koumpounophobe amish people

  • I love this. It's just.../pure genius/. I was waiting for some big jump but that smile...god that smile is the icing on the cake here...

  • Hello my name is CutieBlou and I am a Koumpounophobiact.

  • psyyyyycho.

  • omg my teacher look like neil gaiman...

  • @LoveJaydaNoworLater The buttonmonster is going to rape you tonight

  • Neil Gaiman is sooo awesome. I've always knew that he's a great author but after watching this video I like him even more.

  • 1:51 that damn smile...

  • Lol what a brilliant guy he is. That actually scared me.

  • dude, Gaiman owns

  • do you think that's good for a girl in a stormy night alone in her room with the only light of my computer?,now I don't want to look behind me D:

  • @LoveJaydaNoworLater really?,well before the movie existed I had weird dreams about these button-eyed people, and I still have them, but am afraid that maybe they are not dreams,so yes I probably have it too

  • Wow, that was really not scary at all. Disappointing.

  • 0.0 >.< 0.0

There goes my hopes of sleeping tonight (or EVER AGAIN)...

  • Must not blink... must not blink... must not blink...

  • you got a problem with people sleeping PEACEFULLY at night??? huh???
