Somewhere, the message got lost I guess...
The Dixiecrats did indeed oppose Civil Rights legislation. Well a lot of them did. Not all. And it was LBJ from Texas who pushed thru the most sweeping Civil Rights legislation. The racist elements of the Democratic party abandoned ship long ago though, and went over to the Republican side. It's why the solid Democratic south became the solid Republican south within the course of a generation.

The Dixiecrats did indeed oppose Civil Rights legislation. Well a lot of them did. Not all. And it was LBJ from Texas who pushed thru the most sweeping Civil Rights legislation. The racist elements of the Democratic party abandoned ship long ago though, and went over to the Republican side. It's why the solid Democratic south became the solid Republican south within the course of a generation.
I'm sure you already realize all of this, of course. But it's often overlooked.

I'm not talking about Republicanism, but rather conservative.
But I can appose a particular civil rights act without being racist, if I think that such a law was unjust, or would harm the country disproportionately.

No, I'm saying that just because some within the Republican Party indulge in racism doesn't mean that everything conservative is racist.

There is plenty to blame Liberals for, but the Tea baggers are a conservative creation and a conservative problem.
The Conservative Movement appears to have given up on a reason argument, and now resorts to equal amounts of religious zeal, fear, and good old fashioned hatred.
This is NOT what the Republican party or Republican philosophy is about...
