It's was because they were part of Samoa but the Tongans while ruling Samoa took over the islands and added them as parts of Tonga up to now. You'll have to fight the Tongan Marines & Navy (like the current dispute between Tonga and Fiji over the Minerva Reef) to claim them back - for being closer to Samoa.

Samoa has had this tradition in their blood since our ancestors passed this down to them. Its not just something they do before a game, it's also a reflection of the lifestyles they lead and how firmly their own culture is rooted into the firm foundation of their own fa'asamoa culture. It's not just for NZ. PLEASE! Samoa does not do this simply for gain of applause in the spectators. They do this for their families and loved ones at one. National pride in their SMALL than NZ sized country.

Haka is a general term for Dance, so it can be called a "haka" , but is properly called the Siva Tau cause it's done by Samoa. So yes it can be called a Haka since if it were in Maori Language it would be a HAKA because it is action with dance . Siva also means Dance -
