@terran236 that is normal, ebony often has a lot of contrast, and dyed to be completely black, but the wood/luthier nuts I know appreciate a natural ebony with light streaks :) as do I
I just got a gibson les paul, It is the first guitar with an ebony fretboard for me. I was wondering is it normal to have those woody light colored lines on ebony? I used to think ebony was just black. Either way it looks beautiful to me.
@terran236 Ebony is not pure black naturally - they stain ("ebonize") it to dress it up on a new instrument. Most people don't realize that. Natural ebony has grain like any other wood and will vary from black to very light gray. It'll darken with time - hand oil, etc. Can't prove this but I have no doubt older instruments had blacker ebony to start with.
@moucon Thank you for the info! I love the natural grain, added roche thomas woodwind bore oil just to darken it a bit. The light grain still shows but it's a beautiful dark color now.
Only thing that worries me is the use of water getting on the board but at the end you use Fret Doctor so that would i suspect reverse the effect of the water ?
@TheJagzy Thanks, I'm glad you like the videos. About the use of water ... I keep the tools only damp by wiping them on a paper towel. This also keeps everything clean. The idea is to use just enough wetness to keep down the dust, because it contains nickel which is toxic to breathe. Also, I oil the wood with the Fret Doctor before I put in the frets, to protect it from the glue and cleanup during that process. So it's sealed once already before the crowning starts.
I love your vids,It shows how much work really goes into a well crafted guitar.Lots of the big companies are now using machines to do about 75% of the work.I watched a Cort Factory Tour on Youtube the otherday & this vid shows them using machines to put in frets, polish the frets & lots of other things i cant go into now but man seeing vids like this inspires me alot to do my own work to my guitars. That way you know in heart its done correct.
This dude is a little pissy. If your doing a demonstration, I want a close up. If you're slightly inconceivably by it, suck it up for the sake of the video.
RESPONSE: Why would anyone criticize and nitpick someone who has spent his time sharing his expertise with you and thousands of others. I think it is safe to say that those who post on youtube are not professional filmmakers. So when you speak of being "pissy" maybe you should review your own comments. I have always wondered what the real difference is between a $200 and a $2000 guitar. I think we have just witnessed through this incredible series that the difference is attention to detail by true craftsmen. Time is money when it comes to perfection. Thank you so much for the education. . .

@yoheff988 Thanks for the tip. I just don't like steel wool because the filings make a mess and want to get stuck to the pickups. The damp micro mesh makes a great polisher and the frets shine when I'm done. On lacquered maple necks I finish up with metal polish. I don't use it on rosewood because it gets into the grain and looks white.
