The ultimate foundation of nature is too simple to be described, it is like a mind that conceives without mechanisms. But it is too essential, too primal to be saddled with descriptions like "intelligent." @1tabligh I don't think you understood the video. As Stephen Hawking explains, the existance of gravity will completely explain the orderly nature of the universe and our solar system. Scientists can accurately predict the positioning of celestial bodies at certain points in time using only our understanding of gravity. Gravity can explain how galaxies came to be and how the order within our solar system occurs.

I have bought and listened to his audiobook and he very clearly and patiently describes all of the existing arguments of Deists, and is able to counter each one so thoroughly and eloquently that there is no doubt in my mind that god is a fable. Secondly i believe because Christianity is not like any of the other religions, it was not the formation of any society, and it was not formed by human nature, ALL other religions were formed in this way.

@Schism704 Some of Jesus' philosophy was incredibly similar to that of Buddha or Zoroaster who lived centuries before him. So you're wrong, his philosophy was not any different from that of eastern philosophy. And just because he mostly preached tolerance and mercy it does not in any way mean he was god. Intelligence does not equate divinity. And if Genesis isn't literal(original sin is just a metaphor /allegorical), why then is Jesus being crucified for something that doesn't exist?

How can Hawkin possibly know what "everybody thought" at any time in history. There is a towering arrogance behind this sort of statement. Science, and more particularly scientism simply cannot justifiably lay claim to a monopoly on truth, insight or understanding. This is particularly true of ultimate questions.

If there is nothing, there are no laws, because for laws you need something you describe with them. That's just the very basis of physics, it describes. I can't see how he can make such a fatal error.

@1tabligh I don't think you understood the video. As Stephen Hawking explains, the existance of gravity will completely explain the orderly nature of the universe and our solar system. Scientists can accurately predict the positioning of celestial bodies at certain points in time using only our understanding of gravity. Gravity can explain how galaxies came to be and how the order within our solar system occurs.

That's it. A law "only" describes (as all of physics and maths does), it can't cause anything. It's something abstract. If there is nothing, there is nothing to be described by laws. Hawking leaves physics here and just makes an category error.
The LAW of gravity never caused an apple to fall, it describes(!) that it will, according to our experience, do so.

I have bought and listened to his audiobook and he very clearly and patiently describes all of the existing arguments of Deists, and is able to counter each one so thoroughly and eloquently that there is no doubt in my mind that god is a fable. So you're wrong, his philosophy was not any different from that of eastern philosophy. And just because he mostly preached tolerance and mercy it does not in any way mean he was god. But before that he states that "under extreme conditions" under general relativity theory time can behave as another dimension of space, despite the fact that there is no space before these "conditions" and in fact even the conditions themselves could not exist without matter being present. @bass109 another nutjob, there is no heaven or hell, there never was a Jesus, there is no evidence(proof) of his existence, the laws of physics explain why burning in hell is completely impossible , since fire can only exist when there are atoms, solid matter, oxygen, electromagnetic energy(electricity), if we go anywhere after death, we go there without our atoms. the whole repent or burn in hell thing save your soul, is just a load of nonsense, there is no evidence of a soul either.

@bass109 There are a lot of people who believe in God simply out of fear (heaven/hell), somone can say they fully believe in thier God, but cannot actually do it. It's human nature, and are only worshiping, like I said, out of fear, and if you do not truely belive in God to fullest he will smite you (according to his books.)
I'm betting you only believe in christianity because you were raised to, and if you were born in a temple you'd be a buddhist.

What he is saying is that because the basic laws of physics (such as gravity) exist and always have existed, the universe has the ability to create itself under extreme conditions. The problem with this understanding of the universe is that it fails to explain the existence of the basic laws of physics themselves.

How can Hawkin possibly know what "everybody thought" at any time in history. There is a towering arrogance behind this sort of statement. Science, and more particularly scientism simply cannot justifiably lay claim to a monopoly on truth, insight or understanding. This is particularly true of ultimate questions.
