playback or sing along with a tape was normal in the 80's. Multiple artist peformed at the same stage or in tv shows and programs to promote their new album, so they only did perform one or 2 songs, and to keep cost low, they didn't carry an entire crew with them for a full stage setup. And don't forget that this already 22 years old, so the technology wasn't that good in those days.
